I don't know if this is of any help, but I seem to recall running DOS on an old Dell laptop and pressing a key combination, (Fn and F8 possibly, but I wouldn't put money on it) to switch to the external monitor. Being a HP, the key would be different, (maybe F2) but it's got to be worth a try...
