Probably won’t help but make sure the laptop is off, the power
supply/charger is connected to the laptop and is plugged into to the power
outlet. Also make sure the external monitor is plugged into the laptop’s
VGA port and the monitor is on.

Now leaving THE LAPTOP SCREEN AND THE MONITOR PLUGGED IN AND ON boot the
laptop.

If that doesn’t work check out the keyboard F keys and see if there is a
key or key combination to change the video output source, some laptops have
the ability to use a key combination to to turn the external monitor off/on.
