a) it was maildir (set via a SQL config that overrides the setting in
10-mail.conf)

from a backup, then rsynced the /var/vmail/ directory, where we have all
the mailboxes, in sdbox format.

I did run a protocol analyzer trace on the TCP transaction, when the POP3
clients were connecting and discovered a lot of Re-Transmissions and Duplicate
ACK packets.

No, it parses the config without errrors as far as I can see (below).
It seems only to crash when called in the contect of the LDA - perhaps a
permission problem that is not handled proper
command line call of doveconf yields no problems.

Generally a straightforward way to cure suche MS client errors is to
remove the account in Outlook or OE and re-create it. One can also
delete the cache files for the account but the first way is more
explainable to a user.
