Add an else clause that shows the error and
that will probably show you what's wrong -- eg
dir="$HOME/AppImages"
if [ -d "$dir" ] ; then
PATH="$dir:$PATH"
else
echo "OnNoes!! The directory \"$dir\" does not exist!"

note that $HOME/AppImages is listed only once. That makes sure that
your test, path and diagnostic output are all using the same directory
name.

Seems like that isn't necessary:

There are some hook scripts in the ex/ directory (to be used with

The scripts will call needrestart after any package installation/upgrades.

Why not "sudo bash" when you want to do several things as root?
Lee
no.
If this is a multi-user environment, you should be changing the root
password whenever someone that knows the root password leaves. If you
use sudo exclusively to get root permissions then the number of people
leaving that could require a root password change is potentially
smaller.

Somebody with a lot more knowledge in that area needs to respond, but
wasn't there a setup question about enabling that or no? .. along the
lines of updating access times requires a disk write every time a file

I don't know about systemd, but cron sets just a very few environment
vars (interestingly enough, you _do_ get /etc/environment processed).
I'd guess the problem with "works when run interactively but fails
when run from cron" is because most all of the sh setup is skipped for
things started by cron.

Then there's spectrum analyzers that show how much noise/interference
there is on wireless.. but they cost money and other than moving your
laptop or AP somewhere else there isn't a whole lot you can do about
interference :( I suspect you'd be better off spending your money on
a better wireless card or a better AP.

I'm guessing that
1. your machine is set up to request an ip address via dhcp
2. the dhcp client software isn't smart enough to realize you've
configured a static address on the interface and tries to get an
address via dhcp anyway, fails, and assigns a 169.254.x.x address to
the interface
Best bet would be to turn off dhcp on that interface. I don't
remember if I couldn't figure out how to disable dhcp or if it was
just that I _really_ don't want anything of mine doing mDNS; in any
case, I nuked avahi:
$ apt list --installed 'avahi*'

nk-Local address now has an operable
routable address available, the host MUST use the routable
address when initiating new communications, and MUST cease
advertising the availability of the IPv4 Link-Local address
through whatever mechanisms that address had been made known to
others.

Unicast DNS server." Others might need that ability and so their
risk/reward answer will be different than mine.
In any case, you have a link to the rfc now and can make your own
informed decision.
