Well, have you looked into the /etc/rc?.d directories ? Assuming runlevel of 5 since you going into x, there should be a startup script for gpm in /etc/rc5.d named something like S88gpm. delete it. Now gpm won't start when entering level 5. It will still be running if you use another runlevel o
