I have just recompiled my kernel (potato) to get my sound card working and
since then when I try to run Nescape 4.? I get "Bus error" returned after a
little HDD grinding.

I love Debian, I use Debian, I administer Debian at my
school. Why do I use Debian? Because my school uses it. Why does my
school use it? Because they didn't like the GUIness of RedHat, and
Slackware is just too much of a hassle. Plus, they were drawn to apt-get.

Since I work at an ISP I can get a static IP for the second box as well
as the first (when I dial up the radius server at my ISP recognizes my
username and a

That is: Occationally, the system may find that it needs to update the
state of the IDE devices, and issues an IDE reset to send the disks
or controller to a know state (I'm not exactly sure how or why it does this.)

To start with, I'm using SVGATextMode. My screen is set to 116x60. However,
whenever I view a man page with man, it reformats the page to 80 columns wide,
and justifies it.

Actually, you should just uninstall the xdm package.
The last time I tried, gdm worked like a charm. Just installed the
package and the next boot up it used gdm.

When installing Xwindows the default setup is to start X using
xdm. Obviously initialization was not placed in /etc/inittab, it was
placed in /etc/rc[2,3,4,5].d/S99xdm and /etc/rc[1,6/K01xdm. If I want
to start in text mode and move to X by startx, is it sufficient to
remove the scripts at

I've had some problems with X apps compiled on hpux not displaying on
debian systems. I've tried xserver-mach64 from slink and slink-update
(dpks -s reports versions 3.3.2.3a-11 and 3.3.5-1.99.slink.0).
