it had a bug that was freezing G5s as early as install time, so it got
blacklisted by default by the debian installer. However, I checked more
recently and apparently this would not be necessary anymore.

the snd-powermac module was freezing G5s on fresh installs long time ago, and
was disabled for this reason. But in a test I made one year ago, it was not the
case anymore. There is probably no reason to keep it blacklisted by default,
although it may be useful to double-ch

Additionaly, starting the program from a X session on
a 640x480 or 800x600 resulution makes the program segfault.
I am using an iMac with a nvidia card and the free drivers. There are no
proprietary drivers for us...

I think that you can speed up your tests with the command setxkbmap.
Basically, it accepts options such as -layout, -model, and so on, which
correspond to the Option lines of your xorg.conf.
