Listers,
Having some troubles with the Enterprise's Universal M-35 Diesel engine and I'm
preparing myself for the worst.
Has anyone on the list completely replaced their engine and, if so, what did it
cost you including time out of commission and labor?
All the best,

Sorry to hear this - what problems are you having?
If you can get by for the season a rebuild is certainly cheaper albeit more
time consuming. As to new, it depends on what can be reused but you're in the
15-20k range. Good news is it can be done quickly (days, not weeks) with the

Edd - one other thought. Give McMichael (Mamaroneck) a call. Very good
mechanics who may have suggestions. They did the gasket replacement for the

John,
Thanks. I think I'm in for a head gasket replacement.

Edd, I'm in the middle of this currently. A new 30hp Yanmar will be around
$12k, so I went with a rebuilt engine from Schooner Bay Imported Motors. I
don't have the engine in hand yet and it's taking 6 weeks not the agreed 3 to
deliver, so I can't vouch for them. As a direct replacement for t
Edd,
When I had my gasket replaced on my Yanmar a few years ago [was getting oil in
the coolant] the mechanic also highly recommended it would be a good time to
have the injectors checked / rebuilt, and have a compression check on each of
the cylinders – one was near the minimum and the oth
Give beta engines in North Carolina a call... When we did Perceptions they were
less than a Yanmar, fit the same bed width ... New holes, same shaft length,
but gave us new alternator and starter that the rebuild would not have.

David,
Welcome to the 35-3 owners club. I look forward to seeing you out on the
Bay. Any plans for racing? Cock Island this weekend was a long, hot
ordeal, but we managed a second place in PHRF A. I'd love to see your boat.
It's always interesting to see how others are setup. Joel's and mine
Edd,
Have the head check closely for cracks. Sometimes the gasket fails owing to
issues with th e head/block surfaces.
I spent one summer season nursing my old Yanmar powered C&C 36 around the PNW
with a cracked head. I would use the compression release to get it started
when cold. Chan
If it is a head gasket, why are you thinking of a complete replacement? I had a
crack in the head of my Yanmar and removed the head and replaced it with a new
one. One (+) boat buck instead of a bunch (did my own work).
Or, is the rest of the engine pooped as well?

Gary and all,
Thanks for all the advice. I was only wondering about the replacement cost if
it turned out to be more.
A week ago, she ran fine. Yesterday, I couldn’t get it to turn over. Plenty of
cranking from the starter, but no “fire”.
We checked and cleaned the air filter, the fuel filter
An Atomic 4 will work just fine.

A crew member took a tumble on the gate stanchion and broke the base. Can
anyone help me find a base? Do I have to go to a machine shop to make one up.
PS My crew member did not fall over board.and was not hurt. Thanks

Edd,
The M35B installed in Imzadi in 2000 failed in 2009. Long story. Cheap previous
owner who cut one too many corners on the installation.
After looking at cost and installation labor for a number of alternatives
(Yanmar 3?M30, Beta 35, etc.) I ended up getting a 2010 bobtail M35B (no

Edd;
The 30 and 35 HP Beta 4 cylinder engines are based on the same Kubota diesel
engine as the M35B, so the engine swap would be a relatively easy change
out. Different transmission, so maybe a new prop needed, and a different
wiring harness adds a bit of complexity but not much.

May your port never leak again, but if a different ports leaks consider not
using 5200. I like 4000UV.

Edd,
Your M-35 is a marinized Kubota tractor engine. You might contact a
tractor mechanic about rebuilding it. Seems to me a rebuild should be in
the $3000-3500 range. A new one would be north of $7-8K.
I handled a complete rebuild on an M-30 a while back. I got most of the
parts from a Kubot
Chances are, Edd, if your oil is gray, there's water in it and I'd be
seriously considering the head gasket as the likely culprit.
Best of luck,

2GM20F - I’m about to replace the mixing elbow - got the part.
There’s a pipe joint between the mixing elbow and the exhaust elbow that screws
into both parts.
Do I screw this piece in dry or (more likely) use some sort of sealant?
If I need sealant - what do you guys suggest?

I used 4000UV to caulk along the top of my
glued-and-screwed-on-to-the-outside-of-the-boat windows without frames, and
after a couple of years it pulled away from the Plexiglas. Not a lot, but
enough to form a small gap that water can flow through. Stayed stuck real good
to the gelcoat though,
I have heard that although 5200 is amazingly strong, the chemicals in it attack
the plexiglass and will eventually cause premature crazing.
I hope yours buck the trend. Keep us posted.

No. Not sealer. Use the high temperature grey pipe dope

I replaced the head gasket on the Yanmar 2GM in our 29. Apart from the
usual lack of access, it was no big deal. I took the head off and had it
cleaned and faced at a good shop, and putting it all back together went
mostly smoothly. One fuel injector line just would not go back in the right
place,
