I've had the same GFO Gore-Tex in my stuffing box since 2006. I do let
it drip just a little bit, but they say once you break it in you don't

fertile indeed, but I guess in your area you are bedding the boats
down for the winter about now... :)
I suspect the out of round was from a poor engine
I went dripless 4 years ago and love it, no fuss. When I had the shaft
out I noticed that it was badly worn where the old packing had rubbed on
it over the years, if I had re-fit that I would have needed to move the
packing to an undamaged section of shaft.

friendly chandlery guy says this means the stuffing box itself has "ovulated"
and I need to replace the whole shooting match
