Looking for some input on my non starting Universal / Westerbeke diesel
5416 on my 1980 C& C 34. It was running great at the end of last year but
no go from the start this year.
It turns over great but no sounds of combustion. Battery is brand new. Oil
and transmission fluids are at proper levels
Jon and others,
Until two years ago, my boat also used to stall in idle when approaching
docks. Then, midway across Lake Ontario from Cape Vincent to Sodus on a
calm day the fresh water pump/antifreeze circulator seized up. There was
melting belt rubber with smoke as the bearings stopped turning.
Congrats on a successful journey!
We are anchored off Pollepel Island (Bannerman Island) AKA the castle in
the Hudson River. Just South of Newburgh, NY.
We’re only 10 days in on our 23 days planned journey!

Brian,
Are you referring to the hose for the manual bilge pump “Gusher” that is in
the cockpit?
On my 1980 C&C34 the electric bilge pump outlet hose (3/4”) runs through
the cabinetry in the head to the outlet just below the toe rail. The manual
bilge pump outlet hose (1.5”) runs under the engine
So, I am moving my own boat down the Barge Canal from Sodus, NY to
Boothbay, Maine. Day 3 from Sodus ends just below Lock 17 in Little Falls.
An hour later who pulls up… Therapy!!
It’s a small world. Had a great chat with Tom.

>From my previous post a few minutes ago describing an expedition from Lake
Ontario to Maine, one may be misled into thinking all is rosy. I do have a
significant problem and have exhausted my local knowledge. There are no
moorings available within an hour of Saco, Maine! I am on 25 waiting lists.
Tom, Similarly I moved from Rochester, NY to Saco, ME last summer and had
the move/sell debate. We love our 1980 C&C34! Although much of the
electronics are original, removed the LORAN in 2021 when I bought it, she
is a boat we know. So we decided to move her. As soon as the kids get out
of school
John, I also have a C&C34 (1980 vintage). I bought the boat with the shower
sump not functioning but have always found the Lake Ontario waters to be
sufficient for bodily cleaning. I think my problem is the 43 year old pump
that is covered in rust up in the cabinetry! I did consider drilling a hole
Is the lack of availability because of the Mattapoisett Boat Yard fire a
couple weeks ago? (I saw it on Boneheader Boaters of the Week, a great
YouTube channel!)
I moved to southern Maine this summer and there are no slips or moorings.
Most places estimate a 2 year waiting list. Portland Yacht Clu
Wow! I have never seen WEEDS like that. It is a jungle!
Up here in New York we get marine growth from the lake bottom that reaches
the surface about this time of year. Apparently this weekend we had five
boats that collected enough weeds to foul their propellers and render the
boat inoperable. Two
Like many of us, I am excited to get Indigo Out We Go back into the waters
of Lake Ontario in about a month!!! She is a 1980 C&C 34 that we bought
last year. She is a great boat for us because she was stored inside in the
off season but many of her accessories were not functioning, leading to a

DON’T DO IT! Mount a stationary ring (cheap option) or a Spinnaker Pole
Lift on the leading edge of the mast. You will need full mobility of your
rig when sailing with a spinnaker. If you use the ring on the trailing edge
of the mast, one wind shift will pull your pole forward and damage your

Well, yesterday, the boat was hauled out for the winter... time to get busy
before winter sets in for Upstate NY. We had a great summer of sailing on
our new to us 1980 C&C34 which we named Indigo Out We Go.

I am a new C&C34 owner and initially had trouble with my Harken Furler. The
wire halyard wraps around at the masthead when furling. It was clear from
the fraying wire and twisted coil that this had been a problem. I switched
over to a braided line jib halyard and it works fine now. I also watched a
