DON’T DO IT! Mount a stationary ring (cheap option) or a Spinnaker Pole Lift on the leading edge of the mast. You will need full mobility of your rig when sailing with a spinnaker. If you use the ring on the trailing edge of the mast, one wind shift will pull your pole forward and damage your shrouds or snap the whisker pole. That big sail is a powerful force!
I think the ring of which you speak is for clipping halyards when not in use.
