This is not to answer your question, but there is no reason to keep paint off of your depth transducer. It will not affect the performance in any measurable way. The only possible concern is that the solvents in some paints "might" attack the plastic lens. If you want to be sure about avoiding

Agree with Bill. Guessing the reason they didn't see it on the outside is because it's mounted in a well on the inside of the hull. Could be anywhere with 12-18 inches of centerline; in a settee, dinette, v-berth or quarter berth storage, even in the engine compartment. Look for a square or round

Peter, I used to have a Signet depth sounder on my 37+. The transducer was located just aft of the forward cabin bulkhead on the port side. There was also a speed sensor right next to it. My guess is there is something on one side of the forward part of the keel. Do many other listers

Also, don't forget you have to get the starter back on, sometimes this can be harder than getting it off because you need to get hands in there as well to start the bolt, and the starter is heavy. I did cut a new access port some years ago but it still is difficult to get to the starter motor.
