Hi Jacob,

I recently installed a vertical windlass on my LF38. It was installed on deck
so that the chain hole went to the chain locker whereas the hole for the
windlass drive went into the v-berth. I have not finished writing it up on my
blog(even though it was last July), but I do have photos. As recommended by a
Maxwell tech, I did not drill the extra hole for a chain counter, did not use
the provided (& useless) gasket, and sealed it with plenty of sealant. I
have been very pleased with the installation, and I have had no water leakage
into the v-berth.

If you cut holes into the deck, be sure to properly seal the deck core with
epoxy & thickened epoxy (and don’t ever consider using a sealant, 5200 or not,
for sealing the core).
