John and any 33-II folks out there; I was told once that the 33-II is a derivative of the 34; if so, would the setting and trim you outline for the 34 transfer to the 33-II? I'm guessing that even if they are not linked from the design standpoint, the rigs must be reasonably similar for trimming

For the 34 the babystay is a critical component of mast and sail trim when going upwind. All you have to do is lay on the deck and sight up the mast with no babystay and watch the mast pump away which wrecks havoc on the mainsail trim / shape. We play the babystay in concert with main cunningham,

The baby stay on the 35-3 does a great job of flattening the main. I haven't needed it to stop any pumping downwind, so it gets loosened with the other settings at the top mark, so no issue with the pole. It stays sort of tensioned when cruising, so no pain at all. I only wish I could loosen

Aaron Get your mast straight side to side with little to no tension on the backstay. You can use your main halyard to do that. Then start adjusting the upper shrouds, 2 full turns on the turn buckle each side after which measure the tension with your Loos gage...I assume you have the right gage f

Our 34R has runners and checkstays and as Eric said, they are used after backstay is on to firm up the mast, or pull it straight to put more belly in the main. They do a great job for a bendy mast. Feel lucky if you don't have them. They are an extra pain in the ass, you don't need. Our tripple

You are right Aaron. The shrouds are way too loose. There is a wonderful explanation of tuning a rig on the Selden website. (It doesn't require a Loos gage.) Only a 6 ft folding metric rule, which I found at HomeDepot. I use their method and like the results. Be sure to read it, and lube all

On our 34 (single spreader rig), we only have the baby stay on if we are going to be racing / sailing in chop. It's needed with the in-line spreaders to keep the rig from pumping. We also use it if it's breezy to maintain bend in the mast. We do end for end gybes, so it's not in the way. If we d
