Hi Folks,
I'm using kde 4.4.5 on a PC running Debian 6.0.1. Until a few days
ago my desktop showed a task bar or panel containing icons upon which
I could click to start the associated applications.
Unfortunately, I clicked on something I shouldn't have and my desk top
now looks quiet differe
I run a much older version and the daemon which handles it in my machine is
"kicker".

Check and see if your Desktop activity setting were changed by:
1) right-click somewhere on empty Desktop space
2) click on "Folder View Activity Settings" -- a new window opens
3) click on icon Activity in the left pane
4) if you want the behaviour of KDE 3.5, I recommend you set Type to
"Folder V
This is the problem with these "gui" systems. We need a log! As a programmer
there were many times I had a camera over my shoulder!

Thsnks for your detailed help. I think I got most of it right. I now have a
panel containing the icons for most of my applications.
But I can't have done everything correctly because the desk top looks like
it did a few days ago. There is a wide strip at the top containing icons
labele

I check my email on the computer at the library at times. Is that
not safe or are you talking about Internet cafes?
A few things for you...
First, it sounds like your current desktop *may* be showing the
Activities desktop. (Hitting Alt-D then Alt-A reveals the activity
switcher). While activities can be fun to play with, it's probably not
quite what you want.
Next, you *could* delete your /home/youruse
