I've been trying for about a week now to get cmipci to output 5.1 sound.
In xine or mplayer I get very bassy distortion. 2 speakers work fine,
as does the mirrored rear speaker setting in the mixer, but I'd like
more than that. Help would be greatly apprec

I got sound! But it's quiet. If I set the PCM level in alsamixer to 70% then I need
to crank the speaker volume. If I set the PCM level to 100% then it's better, but is
it OK to have this in the red (above 70%)? Kinda noisy in here right now, so I can't
really tell if it sounds degraded...
I seem to be having a unique issue getting the sound to work on my
laptop. Everywhere on the internet I see that people with this laptop
have gotten the sound to work with no modifications. My problem is
this: I install alsa-lib, alsa-utils and alsa-driver either from the
source on sourceforg
FWIW, Gentoo and the kernel devs claim that this problem is fixed in
the 2.6.6 kernel, but in order to get sound, I have to disable acpi by
passing acpi=off pci=noacpi to the kernel at boot time. Im happy to
have finally gotten sound to work. Now I need to tweak things so I
can have my custom

snd_kcontrol replaces snd_kcontrol_t. Looks like there are no references
to snd_kcontrol_t anywhere in the new kernel's source tree so this is
probably a simple global change but i thought i'd mention it.

Yet, the only thing that i get out of any sound app is: "Can't open /dev/dsp!"
Does anybody have any ideas? It's driving me nuts!

/dev/dsp exists, and is a symlink to /dev/dsp0
/dev/dsp0 also exists, and has "crw-rw-rw-" as it's permissions.

Wow, i bet that won't format nicely without fixed-width.. in any case, i did
*not* compile alsa with legacy OSS support. I don't know if that would help
at all, however, i'm going to give it a shot anyways.

Ah, the problem is not with ALSA. The problem is that i'm a retard, got it.
In the future, i will always remember to hit the "M" key. :-) Thanks for the
tip. Everything works now. Finally i can block out the office with beats
and overused samples again.

Mark, how much sound are you getting? Just CD (like me) or can you
hear noises from gnome and mp3s from xmms My software is
generating sound information as seen in the graphics in xmms and
gnome sound monitor panel applet, but nothing except cd sound come
