FWIW, Gentoo and the kernel devs claim that this problem is fixed in the 2.6.6 kernel, but in order to get sound, I have to disable acpi by passing acpi=off pci=noacpi to the kernel at boot time. Im happy to have finally gotten sound to work. Now I need to tweak things so I can have my custom kernel AND sound at the same time.
