There were no solutions suggested.
Soundfonts don't load. Midi players don't work. They say:
/dev/sequencer: No such device or address
It's there.

I'll add that adjusting the levels with alsamixer does change the
intensity of the white noise coming through the speakers, but desirable
sounds via playback are still a mystery.
