Hello,
I am trying to get the nm256 driver to work on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop.
It seems I am not alone with this issue (see posts from Ted To 2007/03/05
and Matt Gushee 2006/10/23). Using force_ac97=1 I can get everything to
load, but an attempt to play a wav file gives the following error m

I have the problematic NeoMagic 256 sound card on a slackware 11.0
Inspiron 3500 and I can't seem to get it to work. I have installed
1.0.13 and have managed to load snd-nm256 by passing the force_ac97=1
option. But still no joy. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get
it working?
Thanks!

Thanks to Takashi, my nm256 driver no longer crashes on load.
alsamixer now runs and looks OK.
But I can't get anything from aplay!
$ aplay -v schubert.wav
Playing WAVE 'schubert.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono
aplay: pcm_params.c:781: snd_pcm_hw_param_set_near: Assertio
Thanks for the help, Takashi, it now loads without crashing!
Can't play anything, though. :( I'm starting a new thread for that...

I've got a laptop with a NeoMagic 256 soundcard built in. It pretty

Kernel is 2.4.14-pe (Robert Love's preemptive patches). Seems to run
fine otherwise. Kernel has modules enabled, sound support enabled but
