Thanks for the help, Takashi, it now loads without crashing!
Can't play anything, though. :(  I'm starting a new thread for that...

Hmmm, maybe this tip should be in the alsa-driver/INSTALL file.

Apparently those are irrelevant...

For me it now loads with:
options snd-card-nm256 snd_index=0 snd_id="NeoMagic" \
        snd_force_ac97=1 snd_buffer_top=0x27ec00

This is on a Dell Latitude CPi-A, by the way.
