Thanks for your reply - OK, upgraded to 1.0.14.rc4 per instructions on

ard=MagicMedia+256AV.&chip=NM2200&module=nm256.  Behavior is the same.  

snd-nm256 will not load without force_ac97=1; when sucessfully loaded,

aplay somefile.wav

results in 

aplay: pcm_write:1265: write error: Input/output error
