here in my system. I think there is a problem with the way alsasound
runs (or was installed) in /etc/rc.d/init.d. The mixer ends up not
getting initialized properly. I'll find some time to look at it.

Then, I have compiled and installed alsa-driver 0.9.4 (also tried 0.9.3)

Whenever I try to remove the snd-via82xx module, the system freezes.
