Well, I tried this... Thanks for the help.

The asound.state you sent wasn't for exactly the right card... I had to change
82801DBICH4 to 82801CAICH3, and then it moaned about some invalid parameters:

shiro simon # alsactl restore -f ./asound.state
alsactl: set_control:803: warning: name mismatch (Center Playback
Switch/Headphone Playback Switch) for control #3
alsactl: set_control:803: warning: name mismatch (Center Playback
Volume/Headphone Playback Volume) for control #4
alsactl: set_control:890: bad control.4.value type

I tried emerging alsamixergui. Tweaked all the settings... Still no sound.
Something weird: There were red dots above 'Mic' instead of white dots
everywhere else. So it looks like it's trying to capture? I couldn't swith
this off in alsamixer or alsamixergui. (using space) - Perhaps it's trying to
do full duplex and failing? Or maybe I'm way off. Just a wild guess.

Not sure what to try next.

Thanks,
Simon
