RE: MAJOR bug with 3.3.3r9 on Windows XP
NO - This happens in NT4 and Windows 2000 - I has to be a R9 issue - I have reverted to 3.3.3R7 to resolve this... Which is a bit annoying, as my friends now know this and so periodically attempt to connect to my machine in order to removemy wallpaper for me. All my friends are running Win2000 3.3.3r9, and me trying the same trick on them doesn't do anything, so I assume it's an XP issue. --- | Ian Cowley | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Tel: +44(0)7979 474830 | | Christ's College| www.iancowley.co.uk | +44(0)1223 700648 | | Cambridge, CB2 3BU | | ICQ: 37181817 | - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html - E mail Disclaimer You agree that you have read and understood this disclaimer and you agree to be bound by its terms. I have exactly the same problem with ONE of my servers. The window closes down just as the remote changes from screen saver mode to normal mode. Re: vnc and vpn
Hi, Dave. I think that the cisco client changes the default route on the win98 to point to the corporate network. Therefore the VNC connection is dead from that moment. An easy workaround can be used on the win98 machine. Before you start the cisco client, add a host specific route for the w2k machine to the routing table on the win98. If you need info about how to add the host specific route, send me an email. Then you should post a summary to then list. Re: "Unrecognized option: -inetd" when accessing via mozilla
Yes, now that I stop to create a web page for it, and connect, your advice does help. ;) And in fact, I can almost log in to my machine now. Here's how far I get: I connect to standard web page hosting the java applet. It loads the applet correctly and shows the vnc password text box. I can login. My machine's standard GDM login screen is then displayed. As soon as I click on a user, however, I get a Java error. java.io.IOException: Unknown RFB message type -1 If, instead of clicking on a user, I attempt to type in the username, I am able to get the cursor into the text box, but after typing a character or two I get the following error: java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe I am so close to having this work! :) Could this be a problem with the java viewer, the jvm used by my browser, or something in the configuration files? Thank you very much for your help! Derek Di Matteo --- On Tuesday 22 May 2001 03:30, Joshua J. Kugler wrote: > >I completely removed all vnc files from my system and installed the binary > >3.3.3r2. Help with Win98SE Running Viewer and Linux running Server...

Windows XP issues (reality check)
At 01:24 AM 5/22/01 +0100, you wrote: >If someone tries to connect to my VNC server running on Windows XP (Beta >2), and fail, my wallpaper is removed. First, before I start, let me acknowledge that without bug reports, issues are never found and fixed. But I also wanted to make sure that no one has unrealistic expectations concerning Windows XP Beta 2. Re: MAJOR bug with 3.3.3r9 on Windows XP Just a semantic issue... I would have phrased your message "MAJOR bug with Windows XP Beta 2". When comparing a program that has been around a long time and stable to a BETA operating system that has been around for less than a month, I would generally assume that bugs are in the Beta OS. Especially given Microsoft's not-so-sterling track record concerning bug populations in released products. I never use a wallpaper myself, so I haven't experienced this problem. Your post states that it only happens in XP, other users have stated it exists in NT and 2000 as well. I would tend to suspect that the problem is the _failure_ to connect. If VNC turns the wallpaper off at the beginning of the connection, then fails to re-enable it on a failed connection, that would explain some of the reproducibility issues (people who log in and log out don't see it, people who fail to log in see it). This is all guesswork... Also, regarding the "Quick User Change" feature. Microsoft made a fundamental change to the underlying graphics system, and a program that is intricately tied to it doesn't behave exactly as expected. Not surprising. There is a very great potential that Microsoft has re-"engineered" XP in such a way that VNC and other non-Microsoft products cannot function properly. Consider: 1. Microsoft makes a product called Terminal Server that is great, but fairly expensive, especially considering all the per-user / per-application licenses you end up needing. VNC, pcAnywhere, etc. all have a negative impact on this branch of MS's income stream. 2. Much of the functionality VNC needs is not documented, is documented incorrectly, or is actively mis-represented in other ways, even in current OSs. XP is highly unlikely to improve this situation. 3. Even assuming fair play and niceness on MS's part -- the easiest way to handle switching desktops on a single display would be to discard all graphics operations for desktops that are not visible. Then, when a desktop becomes visible, invalidate all the rectangles on the screen, causing the applications to refresh them. If this is the case, there are no graphics for VNC to retrieve, because the graphics operations and framebuffer are being ignored. VNC can't get the actual hardware framebuffer, because XP is going to protect that VERY heavily to make sure that User A doesn't go scribbling on User B's desktop. If you can't write to it, you can't read from it -- Windows doesn't have security settings on device contexts or graphics operations. Again, always good to see bug reports and areas for improvement, but I just wanted to make sure that people understand that these problems can very easily be in Windows XP, rather than in VNC. Also, I don't represent VNC, AT&T, anyone else in the project, or my company, so if you feel like flaming, it's just me... Mac _ /"\ Mac Reiter\ /ASCII Ribbon Campaign Nomadics, Inc. Failed to connect to server
Hello I've just installed VNC, but am having a problem. I have two computers on a LAN. On both machines I've installed VNC. One machine A, I load up the server, set up a password, and the tray icon appears. On machine B, I load up the viewer, and try to conenct to the machine A. I enter its host name (also tried IP - "192.168.0.1") and press enter. I get the "Failed to Connect to Server". However, If on machine B I start the viewer in listening mode, and then on machine A I "Add New Client", machine A's desktop appears suddenly on machine B. So, in other words, I can't connect directly to machine A from B using the viewer, or virse versa, but can connect if one machine listens, and the other machine adds the other as a client. Anyone know what could possible be wrong? PS - I've also tried TridiaVNC - exact same problem. TIA Saleel. What happens if you disconnect VNC after switching from user A to user B and then reconnect? Do you get the blank user A display or user B's display? I'm not sure what Microsoft do to achieve the effect. It sounds as though they try to be clever about who is accessing the display and are getting it wrong, by assuming that VNC belongs to user A. I have noted another strange behaviour on 3.3.3r9: This is on NT4 WS SP6a - I have no wallpaper, only the standard green colored background - I connect from a remote client (my laptop) - I maneuver the desktop just fine - Now I log off the VNC connection Suddenly the Windows NT4 logon bitmap appears on my desktop! I don't mean the logon dialogue, just the bitmap that is shown behind the login dialogue when I power up my system. This bitmap is now on my desktop. Greetings, I want to congratulate all contributors on a very nice project ! I run VNCserver for Linux(RH 7.1) on a local cluster that makes x3270 connections to an S390 system in Boulder. x3270 needs an X server, but I don't want to put the video hardware on the cluster.I have been using Xvfb for this purpose, and have now replaced Xvfb with VNCserver.I get the same virtual framebuffer with the added benefit that I can view the desktop when I need to for diag purposes, or for remote view/support. Some of my support folks need to see the X desktop also, which always required a trek to the server room; not any more! The W2K VNCviewer is working just fine from their desks, and remote support of this server cluster has become a breeze. Brilliant ! Mark H. VNC Connection Freezes / Drops
Relatively new to VNC (great product) and I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but I am experiencing the following problems. VNC Version: 3.3.3r9 Connection: WinNT4 SP6 to Win2K 1. Periodically the connection will drop the session causing a need to restart the connection. 2. Frequently, the cusor will freeze and the connection will need to be closed and restarted. Note: The white cursor freezes, the dot cursor remains active and will allow me to close the window to restart the session. I've reviewed the FAQ and did not anything specific to these problems. Bo, both machines are running Win ME. Scott, launched the server on machine A, went to machine B, Start, Run, "telnet 192.168.0.1 5900". After a long pause: "could not open a connection to 192.168.0.1" or something along those lines. BTW, I haven't had, and don't have, any other problems with my LAN. Thanks. RE: Failed to connect to server
Then the VNC service is not running. Nothing is servicing that port, so you have to find out why. Must be some setting in VNC. However, I am only familiar with WinNT and W2000 machines, it's been a long time since I dealt with the home class PC:s (W95-98-ME) so I guess my ideas are no use here. :-( /Bo -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Saleel Majeed Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2001 10:58 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Failed to connect to server Bo, both machines are running Win ME. I know what the code causing the problem is, but not why it causes a problem. It *looks* like the problem is that the thread which restores the desktop to its normal settings is running as the wrong user in some situations. What happens during a successful connection? Does the wallpaper dissappear, or dissappear when the connection quits, or neither? From: "James ''Wez'' Weatherall" > This sounds like an issue with your network. Sorry James, it does happen. especialy in the followings: if there is high CPU load on the server, if the server side is very low memory, if the connection speed is 56k and below. if there are more than about 20 hoops between sides. you can call these "network issues" but it is tcp after all and packets do get lost. also noticed that other types of tcp-based connections stay alive (ftp, ssh, and ping). using VNC for long time , I just learned to live with it: close the connection (from viewer side) and reopen it. Windows 2000 fun
I have been using vnc off and on over the last several years and have never had a problem. Now I am finding something interesting happening with the 3.3.3r9 running as a service on win2k pro. It works fine after modifying the registry with AuthHosts entries and a QuerySetting of 4. When I connect, the user gets prompted to accept or reject. If they accept I get the usual password box. This all works good until I try to connect before ctrl-alt-del is pressed. If the user logs on and then I connect, I can log off through VNC, and log on as a different user just fine. But if I attempt to connect before the user logs on interesting things happen. When the prompt should appear on the vnc server computer, this computer beeps like the prompt has been displayed, but no prompt window appears. You can move the press ctrl-alt-del screen around and check behind but nothing is displayed. After the QueryTimeout time has elapsed, I get the default rejection notice. It is like it is waiting on the desktop for the user to accept the connection, only you aren't there yet. If I set the timeout high enough, I can log on and the accept prompt is there waiting and everything is good to go. I searched the archives but didn't find anything that worked. I have QuerySetting and QueryTimeout set for both System and Default under the HKLM\software\orl\winvnc3 key. Is there anything else to that anyone has come across to fix this? Has anyone else seen this? If I adjust the settings to not query, it connects fine so I know that part works great. It is like vnc doesn't know where to display the accept dialog box or something. As I am not a programmer, I just make this stuff up as I go. If anyone has seen this and fixed it, would you be so kind as to help a lost soul out. The wallpaper disappears on connection and reappears on disconnection. I tried both the "kill all clients" from the server end (here), and getting the connecting end (a win2000 machine) to close its connection - bot hways work fien. It sounds like you're describing the "This computer is locked, press CTRL-ALT-DEL to unlock" screen, rather than the login screen.
