Hello James, I have been reading over the long discussion that went on a few months ago about how Win 2000 Advanced Server seems to behave differently than the version of Win2000 that you had tested with. We are using the WIN-VNC 3.3.3r7 on a variety of NT4 boxes without any problems (running as a service), however... Our one lonely Windows 2000 Server (not Advanced), the service refuses to work at the logon screen... the service answers... but... When I try to connect I get a password failed message. However, if I physically log the machine in past the logon screen, the password suddendly works, and everything works. Now if I during my VNC session, log-out and then log-in as a different user, still everything works fine. But if I log-out and am therefore sitting at the "Press CRTL-ALT-DEL" to logon screen... And kill the VNC connection... well... then I need to walk back to the server and physically log it in again, before VNC will authenticate my password... It seems to me that something is preventing the password from being properly authenticated. As I mentioned I do get a request for entering the VNC password... Any ideas? Work arounds, etc? VNC Installation on Win32
It would be great if the next release came out as Windows Installer package. If you own Visual Studio (as I am sure the programmers really do), then the Visual Studio Installer aka Windows Installer aka Microsoft Installer is a free add-on. The benefits to going this route would be 1. You could push it out to remote Win32 systems using whatever technology you'd like. 2. You could do a silent or scripted install 3. You could make it part of an unattended server/wkstn setup. - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -
Client Access keyboards problem
I am using VNC to maintain several hundred windows computers which use IBM's Client Access for AS/400 Problem is, after connecting to these computers, the numeric keypad doesn't work. It acts as if the num lock is always off, so they get arrow keys instead of numbers. The problem remains until the computer is rebooted. Remapping the keyboard so that base and shifted number keys are the same helps with that problem, but presents a new one, where when I hit 'home', it enters a 7. This must have something to do with keyboard hooks, as both programs seem to use them. I would really like to get this working, because our computers are in many buildings, and VNC could really help in administering them. I have downloaded the source code, and I have MS Visual C++ to compile it, but I'm no programming expert, so I cant find a way around this problem. RE: Client Access keyboards problem
I had the same problem you have to go into keyboard mapping and make sure "base" and "shift" on the number pad both have the actual number in it. It's best to do one and copy the keyboard file and copy it to the other machines. RE: VNC Installation on Win32
I hope that's only an optional install method... If you don't have Microsoft Installer installed and try to install something using it, it tends to blow up. I use Nortons AntiVirus Corporate and their new 7.5 version uses MSI to install itself. We don't use IE as our default browser and it was at version 4.x. I have had a couple of NT workstations choke on the NAV install and grudge up the registry, requiring a re-install. Norton's answer is to install IE 5.x first, which puts the MSI on the system. Doesn't matter if IE causes problems elsewhere... Besides other problems with some of this stuff, I really don't like the way companies push software at you and Microsoft is one of those companies. Lyle P.S. These are my personal opinions and please don't flame me via the list. The way I did this was to change the password, and then to manually look in the registry. You will not be able to cut and paste this registry key, because it is a password so you will have to copy it manually. WinME networking memory leak.
Hi Everyone, I wonder if anyone has had a problem similar to mine. I have found that when VNC is running my memory will slowly become allocated at a rate of about 10kb/s. This continues until the computer becomes unusable. I don't think this a VNC specific issue, since I have an e-mail checker that does the exact same thing when it is running. I wonder if any windows programming expert has heard about something like this, if MS has changed any networking APIs, or suggests any changes. I used the built in system monitor to watch my memory decreasing, and found the cause by eliminating all running programs to stop it, and then can start them one by one. After waiting for their allocation to stabilize, it is quite flat unless I have one of these programs running. Thanks for any suggestions. I am positively addicted to VNC, it is the single greatest productivity tool I use. I will probably have to downgrade my machine to 98 if this continues. I wouldn't lose much, I know, except time installing the OS. Re: WinME networking memory leak.
If you want networking and stability, I would really consider Win2K vs one of the Win9x variants unless there is some app you have the simply won't run on Win2K. - Original Message - From: "Leon Mualem" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, January 18, 2001 9:38 AM Subject: WinME networking memory leak. > Hi Everyone, > I wonder if anyone has had a problem similar to mine. Windows 2000 Authentication
Hi guys, I was just wondering something here. Since Windows 2000 Active Directory is LDAP compliant are there any future plans of allowing Active Directory/LDAP lookups for VNC authentication? If not, I'd like to make it a formal suggestion. Simon, I can't find the value for Password under Default. it has nothing there. But I did found one VNC password under HK_Users\.Default\software\ORL\Winvnc3. The way I did this was to change the password, and then to manually look in the registry. You will not be able to cut and paste this registry key, because it is a password so you will have to copy it manually. Notice this changes the password for both the machine and the current user at the same time. Hello Brandon, look at your vncserver-script and change the $defaultXStartup-entry to: $defaultXStartup = ("#!/bin/sh\n\n". "/usr/dt/bin/Xsession &\n"); And you will get your CDE-desktop - you must login with telnet before and start the vncserver. RE: WinME networking memory leak.
For now, to temporarily resolve the problem, goto www.analogx.com go to their download page, go to system downloads and download Maxmem, it is as little graph in the taskbar that monitors your memory and allows you to do passive, aggressive, or periodic memory clears. Just be sure to turn it off if you are running a game as it will lag the suck to no end when it tries to do a periodic wipe. Re: Pocket PC, Terminal Server client and VNC
OK, here is the log when I connect to from the iPAQ Terminal Server client from the Win2K terminal server to a WinNT 4 machine with VNC server running. Thu Jan 18 13:51:26 2001 D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncService.cpp : SelectHDESK to Default (10) from 10D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncService.cpp : SelectHDESK failed to close old desktop 10 (Err=170) D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncClient.cpp : client disconnected : 255.255.255.46 (1) D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncServer.cpp : deleting desktop server D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncService.cpp : SelectHDESK to Winlogon (118) from 10D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncService.cpp : SelectHDESK failed to close old desktop 10 (Err=170) D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncDesktop.cpp : initialised palette OK D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncService.cpp : SelectHDESK to Default (10) from 118Thu Jan 18 13:53:51 2001 D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncSockConnect.cpp : accepted connection from 255.255.255.2 D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncClient.cpp : client connected : 255.255.255.2 (1) D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\vncServer.cpp : verify succeeded - null filter Thu Jan 18 13:54:22 2001 D:\ORL\vss\winvnc\VSocket.cpp : socket error 0 That is it. The VNC client shows "Connection Closed." Again, this procedure works fine with a PC doing the same thing. - Original Message - From: "James ''Wez'' Weatherall" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, January 18, 2001 9:24 AM Subject: Re: Pocket PC, Terminal Server client and VNC > > > Is that correct?
