I'll wait for the N950 or whatever they call it, running Meego before I buy anything. Maemo is a dead platform. It took them forever to release this update and I doubt there will be another one. I want something like Fedora for mobile devices. Newegg has the Intel Mainstream 160 GB SSD on for about $450. The hard drive in my laptop is slowly failing and it needs to be replaced. Its an HP HDX with 2 drive bays so I can fit F13 and /home on the 160 GB and use a 500 GB drive as secondary storage. People say its the best performance upgrade you do to a computer. How is (k)networkmanager supposed to work these days ?
I set up networking with network manager on my laptop back in F11. Or was it F10 ? Not sure. Everything has worked fine since then. I had an icon in my system tray that showed me signal strength and I could click to select various APs, connect, etc. I accomplished this using the NetworkManager-gnome package. Last night I upgraded from F12 to F13. Everything went fine except when I booted I was without wifi functionality. I got everything working but I don't have an icon in my system tray anymore. Bad hard drive or bad kernels ???
I've had boot problems for months and I'm trying to figure out if its the hard drive or a kernel problem. I just upgraded to F13. I've been running F12 since it came out. Back in January, 2010 I began experiencing boot problems. When I boot, grub will always run reliably but about 2/3rds of the time the kernel won't start running after you select it. All I get is a blinking cursor on a black screen. I've never not been able to get my computer to boot, but sometimes it takes 5 tries. Sometimes it works the first time. I never had any boot problems before it started in January. I've checked the hard drive. All the SMART data says the drive is fine. And grub has never failed to run. So is there something wrong with my laptop or is this a kernel problem ? Which software for backing data up to DVDs ?
I need to back up 20 GB of Windows data from a hard drive onto DVDs so that a Windows user can access it. I can read the Windows hard drive just fine. What software might I use to automagically split the data into DVD sized chunks and write it to a DVD ? It would be nice if it didn't put half of one dir on one DVD and the second half on another. I know this will happen with any dir that is larger than a DVD, but it would be nice if it didn't do that for the rest. Ideas for integrating a SIP account, N900, Magic Jack, Linux, etc...
I'm looking for some ideas on overhauling/revamping our telephone system. We are two busy working professionals. We spend half our weekends away from home. My wife still has an iPhone. I'm getting an N900. We have a landline with (terrible) voice mail service. I want to tie it all together, somehow. I'd like to get a VOIP account somewhere and connect to it with a SIP server of some sort so that I can do things with that connection. I'd like all our voicemails to be stored on that SIP server, so we don't have to erase them, etc. Actually, I'd like to get them as emails that we can listen to and organize. I'd like to be able to call into my SIP server with the N900 and maybe the iPhone and then make (cheap) calls anywhere. Can one share a Magic Jack connection as a SIP service ? How can I use Linux to do some of this stuff without resort to a full blown asterisk installation ? How do I clone a drive and resize (downsize) a partition ? fdisk verify warning.
I'm moving /, /boot and swap from a conventional hard drive to an SSD. Both drives are 160 GB in size. I want to resize the /boot and swap partitions from 200 MB and 2 GB to 500 MB and 8 GB respectively. The first resize is because preupgrade now fails to run unless /boot is 500 MB or larger and the second because the swap file is supposed to be as big as the RAM in the computer and my laptop currently has 4GB and I want to upgrade to 8 GB in the future. So... I partitioned the SSD to the appropriate sizes. I then ran Clonezilla and installed the /boot data seemingly without any problem. I used the expert mode and told it to resize things to fit the new /boot partition size. Unfortunately, Clonezilla won't let me do the same for / because / on the SSD is 6 GB or so smaller than it was on the hard drive because /boot and swap are larger. So how do I move ALL the data from / on the hard drive to / on the sdd ? dd won't work because its for device files, not for partitions. If I use dd between the devices, it won't resize anything. Or should I do an outright dd and then use gparted to resize everything afterward ? Can one make cp copy EVERYTHING on one drive to another and keep the timestamps, etc, all correct ? I think I did this once a few years ago using tar, but I can't remember how and I think it took up a lot of disk space and took forever to run. It throws an error and exits if you try to downsize the partition as you copy it from the source to the destination. gparted was excellent once I figured out that I had to copy a partition and paste it into an unallocated space before I resized it. It would be nice if you could do that in one step, but it does work doing it in two steps. I too thought that Clonezilla and/or dd would be the easiest. In the end it was gparted. Prior to this I had never thought of gparted as a cloning tool. Re: Kernel boot problems or is my hard drive failing ?
Update I cloned the original 160 GB hard drive onto a new 160 GB SSD. The booting problem is even worse now. It used to take 2-6 tries to get my laptop to boot. Now it takes about 10. The SMART tests from the original 160 GB drive all came back fine. So did all the fscks. I've run the bios memory check and it comes back fine too. The boot problem also occurred when I booted the ubuntu 10.4 live CD. Any ideas ? Re: Status of SSDs under Fedora ?
Update I cloned my old conventional 160 GB hard drive onto a new Intel X25-M SSD using gparted. In doing so, the new partitions ended up being ext3 instead of ext4. The performance improvement is dramatic. It boots super fast. Even Evolution, which became a lethargic dog with the upgrade to F13, is snappy. Its amazing how fast Firefox and Open Office Writer open. Life is good. I have not done any disk optimizations whatsoever. Whatever the defaults are, that is what I am running. I did not perform any before and after tests, but I still have my old harddrive as a backup. I could always swap it in and run some tests if they are needed. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

F13 has reached "it rocks" status !
Just a quick note to say that F13 now rocks ! It works really, really well. Very fast, solid and slick. I had problems with Evolution and Firefox when I first installed. Crashing like crazy. Updates fixed both of those problems. I was having problems booting. That too appears to be fixed. Keep up the good work, people. I reported 2 crashes that I wouldn't have otherwise using it. I am sure that ABRT will increase the stability of Linux over time because more things will get reported, better. Fedora is really getting slick and solid. KDE too. Better and better each release. I ran Windows 7 on my wifes laptop for a day. YUCK ! I can't wait to see the next KDE release go stable. How the H&*()*) do I turn auto numbering in OO Writer completely OFF ?
Another OO update and even more stupid, silly auto numbering. How do I turn it right off, FOREVER ? [rant] I don't know who controls the design of the OO suite, but some of us DO NOT WANT auto paragraph numbering every time we start a paragraph with a number, hyphen or bullet point.Yeah, I'm sure auto numbering is nice for some people, but if I want a paragraph to be numbered, I'll format it as such manually OR I'll enable auto numbering for it myself. I DO NOT WANT a computer trying to figure out how it should be numbering what I write. I want to decide that. PERIOD. UNDERSTOOD ? I spend way, way more time **UNFORMATTING** the stupid number formatting that OO writer applies than I would spend adding number to the paragraphs I wish to have numbered. Isn't the purpose of software to make our lives easier ? What really rips me off is that this auto numbering "stuff" has been going on for YEARS in a predictable cycle. Use Writer for bit, find numbering to be irritating. Do a web search to try to figure out how to turn it off. Turn off some obscure switch hidden 18 layers deep in the GUI. Use it for a while. Upgrade to a newer version. Watch some new silly auto numbering scheme appear. Do a web search for how to turn it off... it continues. WHEN WILL IT STOP ? How do I turn off auto numbering in OO Writer so that it NEVER EVER EVER EVER appears in my work again ? Please, someone stop the lunacy ! [/rant] Thanks for listening... Re: How the H&*()*) do I turn auto numbering in OO Writer completely OFF ?
I think I figured out how to turn off autonumbering. First of all, the help system on OO Writer version 3.3.1 Build 9420 is wrong. To turn it on, it says: "OpenOffice.org can automatically apply numbering or bullets as you type. To Enable Automatic Numbering and Bulleting 1. Choose Tools - AutoCorrect Options, click the Options tab, and then select Apply Numbering - Symbol. 2. Choose Format - AutoCorrect, and ensure that While Typing is selected." To actually turn auto numbering off, go to Format -> Autocorrect -> Autocorrect Options. Go to the Options tab. Unselect the "Apply numbering - symbol: *" option. While I was in the option tab I also turned off "Replace bullets with: *" At this point I don't know if this setting is saved for OO Writer globally or if I have to do it for every document I start. But at least its not tripping me up on my work tonight. I hope this helps someone. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

You connect it to the Internet and to a POTS via an adapter. Then you call into it with your SIP phone and it connects you to the POTS system. I never thought of that... get a bunch of VOIP phones, preferably wireless and one could implement a pretty neat home phone system. That is one of our problems... all our phone messages end up in one voice mail box and its always full. Does SIPWitch handle voicemail ? Will SIPWitch send an email to a user when it receives a voicemail ? As you can tell, telecommunications is a bit of a problem around our house. This has been bothering me for a while. I think its time to discuss it. I use Konqueror as my primary web browser. I probably have 1000 or so bookmarks in Konqueror, arranged into about 50 folders and sub folders. I find it very hard to be able to open the bookmark folder I want without opening a folder I don't want. It gets really bad when I want to open a folder 2 or 3 layers deep. Massively parallel (8 to 10 stream) music server/generator ?
We are considering the purchase of a house. It has about 8 "zones" ie kitchen, living room, bedroom, patio, library, etc. Each zone has 2 to 4 speakers in it, all of which are wired such that they terminate in the utility room. The builder of the house did not provide any wiring for an A/V controller in any of the zones, nor an IR extender. I'd like to build a server that generates music for each of the zones. I'm thinking that it would serve web pages that would allow users to select various music material and direct it to one or more zones via any device that supports a web browser. On the hardware end of things, I'm thinking one could use 1 USB sound card plus an amplifier for each zone. How many USB sound cards could a single i5 ish PC running linux in console mode feed ? (MP3, wav, flac formats) Sometimes one will want to play the same music simultaneously across multiple zones. Ie, during dinner, one might want to play music in the kitchen and the dinning room. Is there a way to sync playback between multiple USB sound cards ? Is there a better way to generate music for this house ? OT ? I'm about this close to buying an iPad...
Hi people. I need to vent... I'm getting frustrated with Linux. Well, not Linux per se, and not Fedora, but the whole experience part of things. I desperately need to do something about the audio system in my car. Its got a head unit that doesn't have an aux in, nor does it support mp3s, etc. It needs to be replaced ASAP. I also need navigation, desperately. Its been that way for a while. I considered doing a car PC. I didn't like all the engineering required to do that, so I nixed it. I considered embedding a HP Tablet in the dash. I took a close look at them and nixed it due to display issues, heat, etc. So I've been waiting and waiting. I considered buying a dedicated head unit with nav but the screens are too small and they seem to go out of date faster than bread on the counter. Along comes the iPad. And it seems to do everything I want. Plays MP3s. Does nav. Bright screen. Affordable. And if you check youtube, lots of people have embedded them in cars. But being an OS guy, I want a machine running Linux, not iOS or whatever its called. Where is it ? I keep reading stories about dozens of tablet devices running Linux/Android/Meego on Slashdot, but where are they ? While I have your attention, I also own a Nokia N900 phone. Right now its running Maemo, which works, but is hardly what one would call elegant. Actually, there are some things that don't work, but that is another story. Nokia is saying they will be shipping Meego in October. I have my fingers crossed. Another thing I am waiting on is KDE 4.6. I am pretty disappointed by KDE 4.5 I know it was a bug fix release, but I expected more. At this point I REALLY have to applaud Apple. They really seem to have their act together. The various vendors in the Linux camp really need to get their butts in gear and start delivering. Hardware companies need to get their tablets OUT into the market. Nokia et al need to get Meego OUT and get some nice apps written for it. (Have you looked at the iPad and iPhone app store lately ?) And the KDE camp needs to finish delivering on their vision for what KDE 4 is supposed to be. I wait, growing more impatient day by day.
