Hi,

Try this one: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHardwareDetection -it
doesn't have much information though. Like any other Debugging*
documentation, it specifies just what info to provide in a bug report
regarding hardware...

hmm, the DebuggingProcedures in h.u.c seems to be imported to w.u.c again.

PS. CC'd ubuntu-devel-discuss instead of ubuntu-devel

Does it really not work? Did / can anyone try (I don't have edgy)?

If it doesn't: part of the spec is to be in contact with linmodems.org
so we can somehow offer winmodem support.

I don't think you need to dial up just to test the tool. As long as
scanModem runs and tells you which driver to use[1] and where to go
next, that means it's working on Edgy.

Shouldn't we CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] to get some feedback?

Thanks (especially for trying) :)

PS. I'm not aware of any alternatives to scanmodem. afaik, if it doesn't
work, that means dial up users are pretty much shut out of Ubuntu.

Rearranging the DebuggingFirefox wiki page for users

2006-12-26 Thread t u
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I have been meaning to do this for a while now. The
wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox is a nice place to provide as a source
for firefox bug reporters to use while sending bug reports.

I rearranged it so it is oriented towards bug reporters instead of the
triagers. Triagers should already be familiar with things to do before
filing and while triaging) a firefox bug (ask for a new profile, maybe
tell users to remove plugins, search upstream bugzilla). but users won't
know this stuff.

I think, if we provide this link to firefox bug reporters when they
first report a bug (and mark them as "needs info"), it will greatly
enhance the reports we get.

I'd like people to check out this page (now a sandbox) before I put it
up for "sale" :)

Link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sandbox/DebuggingFirefox

Some of the changes:
* Remove mention of plugins. Do we want them to remove plugins? See
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_plugins#Disabling_plugins_found_in_the_plugins_folder
on how to do that. I don't think so.
* Remove mention of wiki.ubuntu.com/FirefoxCrashFormLetterRePlugins .
The triager should find this info elsewhere in Bugsquad documentation.
* Remove mention of upstream bugzilla: this is the bug triager's duty
* Compacted and rearranged overall to provide steps to follow and less
irrelevant information.

I a sending this to ubuntu-doc and bugsquad, but because Firefox is a
very visible and important package for ubuntu, I'm CC'ing devel-discuss
and D. Farning (who has been triaging Firefox bugs extensively) to get
as much feedback as I can.

I also filed a bug report on this here so this doesn't go forgotten. Link:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/products/ubuntu-doc/+bug/77228

Thanks all :)

A few megabytes is important to any dial up user. Little traffic is
important to those who pay too much for bandwidth. development time, on
the other hand, cannot be wasted: it is voluntary. If someone who knows
how to code prefers to volunteer and write that code, you get your
feature. I don't see the waste...

It's not like without this user's new idea, the volunteer would
otherwise fix a critical bug or anything. Almost everyone prioritizes
bugs over features...

I don't quite like how feature requests often get labeled as "that's
some waste of time", "that's so lame", and so on...

I feel it would be nice not to provide this kind of feedback to people
who use the software and want more out of it...

thanks.

Notifying end-users when support is no more

2006-12-31 Thread t u
Hi,

Today, I booted to Windows after 4-5 months. Because of my switch to
Linux, I have been behaving like an average Windows user, not going out
of my way to protect the OS.

A pop up appeared and told me that my AVG free anti-virus 7.1 will not
be updated ever again after Jan 15th, and that I should update to 7.5.
Without this pop up, however annoying, I would not have known that I
will not be getting any security updates. That would leave me vulnerable
to everything out there...

I think our end-users who do not like to go out of their way to learn
about what's going on in the community could really use such a feature.

This idea was discussed before, but nothing happened. So I wanted to
attract your attention to this issue again.

At the least, if it is do-able, for desktop users, you could change the
background picture to something that says "upgrade because your current
version will not get security updates within 1 month."... or maybe a pop
up by update-manager? I suspect that server users are more
security-savvy and don't need such intervention.

Thanks :)

Do you mean it should run "update-manager -c" (hence forcing them to
dist-upgrade to a later release)? afaik, dist-upgrades still risk a
broken system.

I kinda think you need to be intrusive (hence the pop up window -or
changed desktop background- instead of a small bubble) but leave the
final decision to them.

flash player 9 -don't include it in Feisty

2007-01-18 Thread t u
Hi,

I usually don't write to tell stuff like this, but this is just
unbearable...

I was using Flash 7 & Fx 2 with Dapper and I was very happy. After the
release of the interview with Torvalds, I updated to Flash 9 (after it
was announced not to be a beta anymore).

For the last two days, Fx crashed about every 20 minutes on flash-using
sites like youtube. I read about similar experiences with Flash betas at
the forums too. Fx never crashed on me before...

I would like to ask the devels not to include Flash 9 in our
repositories... It is too damn buggy, and it's not worth the bad PR
Feisty might get with crashing Firefoxes...

Thanks for your patience in reading this
Sincerely.

Just another bit of insight:
In that same bug, people seem to keep attaching crash reports, even
though no more is needed. I believe that they are doing so not to add
more info really but because they are not sure whether their crash is
the same as the one described in the bug, so they expect some kind of
confirmation:
"Yes, your crash report indicates that you're experiencing this bug"
or
"Your crash report is about something else, please report a new bug"

Just so you keep in mind :)
Thanks

PS. Forwarding to bugsquad so they can keep Robert Collins' plea in mind
as well :)

Timezone change in US

2007-02-19 Thread t u
Hi,

Please ignore if this was discussed before (though it seems not to be
from the search results).

I'm subscribed to Slackware security notices and they seem to have
released an update to their system for the time zone changes in the
US. I was wondering whether we received such an update ourselves. I do
not remember updating any packages that mentioned "time zone" in the
changelog...

>From their notice:
---
New glibc-zoneinfo packages are available for Slackware 8.1, 9.0, 9.1,
10.0, 10.1, 10.2, and 11.0 to update the timezone information to
account for the extention of Daylight Savings Time (DST) in the US.
This is an important update as any machine in the US (in an area using
DST) running Slackware 10.2 or earlier will otherwise have a system
clock off by one hour for a month starting on March 11. It is strongly
suggested to upgrade this package before March 11, 2007.
---

Sorry to bother you,
Thanks.

I agree. I don't think making passwordless login easy (let alone
default...) isn't a good practice at all. If a user wants passwordless
logins, s/he should work hard to find how to do it (just like I did). In
the process, s/he will learn that passwords are a very important part of
what Linux can do for you (just like I did)...

Ubuntu, in the sense used by OP, is already usable for home users. We
need better support for hardware and a few more GUI tools etc but it's
usable as it is now...

There should be a *limit* to how "Windowsish" Ubuntu can become. Getting
rid of passwords is I think really too much...

I think we should "let people learn" about passwords. They should go
beyond their Windows-habit of doing everything without passwords... I
think we are adapting too much and too quickly Gnome's motto of "keep it
simple & stupid" (sic)... As i said, there is a limit to this.

Sincerely.

try scanmodem on feisty?

2007-03-01 Thread t u
Hi,

A request to devels as well as anyone with free time monitoring the list :)

Can someone who is testing feisty on a machine with a winmodem test
whether the scanmodem tool is working there and report their experience
at the *bug report*? Bug report at https://launchpad.net/bugs/42454

It's not hard at all. The following link provides information:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto/ScanModem

Afaik, it cannot break anything in your system. All it does is to tell
you what kind of winmodem you have...

I cannot try bc I'm using a production machine with Dapper with which I
cannot dare to experiment... and the cdimage server isn't working for me
(no answer from server).

PS. If you have free time, you could even try to make your winmodem dial
somewhere in order to test the wiki documentation[1] (which needs to be
offline) and experience what winmodem users experience with Ubuntu. You
probably won't like the latter.

Thanks a lot

I'd like to do more about this bug, but as far as I can see we haven't

except that it probably doesn't work. Modems are clearly a very
difficult area and we are going to need the developers' input before we
can move any further, I think.

Windows CD has wrong label

2007-03-07 Thread t u
Hi,

I imagine that fixing this wouldn't take too long (I apologize if I'm
wrong). This is the bug report: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/71119

Accordingly, both in Edgy and Feisty, the Windows LiveCD shows itself as
Ubuntu 6.06. Can someone please fix it, it is fairly unprofessional (as
in "hmm, is it normal that they forgot that number there?" or "hmm, they
don't really pay attention" even though we all know you pay attention
very much).

Would be very nice if it's fixed before the release. I think, because it
is minor, it keeps getting forgotten...

To be honest, let alone any packaging, I'd me much happier if they just
*worked* on Linux-Firefox a bit more... When compared to Windows'
Firefox (from my experience), it's like an old and unmaintained
Volkswagen Beetle...

Instead, they keep releasing x+1 versions before making x stable...
which makes x+1 even less stable.

:)

Should kqemu be in fesity+1 when it's released?

will they not include kqemu into the kernel some day?

Yes but that trojan came *with* the mp3 player [as a feature, like other
Sony features] :) If we keep with this example, Ubuntu should come with
a Windows or a Linux virus out of the box ;)

Note: i think providing the shipit CDs as CD-RWs is a good idea but it
would be more expensive (drain resources much faster) and many people
who get those CD-RWs wouldn't know that they are rewritable (we rarely
read tfa, let alone the CD cover and stuff). So it is great
theoretically, but unfortunately not practical for now.

Dell, Microsoft, Novell

2007-05-07 Thread t u

Hi,

Did we (Ubuntu, Canonical) just join the Novell-Microsoft partnership
indirectly? By accident? If Dell is going into that much-dreaded deal
(according to this[1], it indeed is), and if Canonical is in partnership
with Dell (through the sale of Ubuntu-installed Dell systems), I think
we just partnered up with Microsoft in making their FUD of "Linux is
stealing from us" much more credible.

I am no developer, and maybe I am a little too fanatic to say that I
wouldn't want to see Ubuntu on a Dell system if Dell is going to use
Ubuntu to actually help Microsoft "conquer the world" :)

But, were Dell's plans known to any of you (including, and most
importantly those working for Canonical) prior the Dell-Canonical
partnership? What might the implications of this be for the community? I
knew that nothing is perfect, but this seems too fishy...

Thanks.

That's just plain funny[1]. In fact, it reminded me of Lessig's "Free
Culture" presentation. Now that even the code for 'doing nothing' is
licensed, there is almost nothing left to own :)

Hey, maybe that's what MS has patented: being idle / doing nothing. Heh
