[Bug 393979] [NEW] keyboard and mouse sometimes not responsive on boot up
Public bug reported: Occasionally when I boot up my computer, my keyboard and mouse do not work. When this happens, the keyboard will work in lilo, allowing me to select kernels and edit the boot line. But once the kernel is booted, the keyboard and mouse no longer work (I have tried booting into X and also booting into single-user mode, with the same results). This is on a Dell Vostro 1320 laptop. I do not have an external USB keyboard, so I can't say whether this affects all keyboards or just the built-in one. After searching around online, I found some suggestions that this happens only while the computer is on battery power. Anecdotally, my experience mirrors that: I have only seen this problem when on batter power, and if I am experiencing the problem, plugging the computer into AC and rebooting makes the problem go away. I also found a suggestion online to add i8042.reset to my kernel parameters. I did this a couple weeks ago, and have not had this problem recur since then. So my suggestion would be for the kernel to enable this flag automatically for Dell Vostro 1320 laptops. I just installed Ubuntu on this laptop recently, so I can't say whether this is a regression from a previous kernel or not. [Bug 153727] Re: Ethernet device's MAC address changes (causing its device number to increase by one each time)
Well, it has been reported for other chipsets -- Realtek and Prism54 (Prism54 apparently fixed by bug 31502). And a few reports here of similar looking problems with different causes, like Oscar Manuel Gómez Senovilla's asix, and my Via-Rhine problem (which you fixed in bug 329106). It's probably just my unfamiliarity with launchpad, but it's fairly confusing trying to figure out which bug is intended to cover which chipset, and I know I've mistaken chipset-specific bugs (like this one) for more general issues. Maybe mention the chipset in the bug title when it's intended to be specific, so people with other hardware know to look elsewhere? e.g. "forcedeth: Ethernet's MAC address changes ...". -- Ethernet device's MAC address changes (causing its device number to increase by one each time) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153727 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 347078] Re: runaway Xorg in drmDMA() (radeon)
Unfortunately, with the released version of jaunty, the character of the problem has changed -- now what I'm seeing (which might not be the same thing at all) is that every now and then I'll do something seemingly innocuous in firefox, the screen will go black and the monitor lose signal, and the machine is dead -- not responding to pings or keyboard or anything else. No flashing keyboard LEDs to show a kernel panic either. If I try those lines I get the same messages as Wenzhuo Zhang ... but in addition, it looks like either with or without the lines, I'm apparently no longer getting dri at all. glxinfo tells me: OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer whereas in intrepid it said: OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE2 TCL And googleearth tells me "You are currently running Google Earing in 'OpenGL' with software emulation." which it doesn't do in intrepid. [Bug 251690] [NEW] Does not Focus where necessary
Public bug reported: This is hard to classify but here it goes... If you attempt to shut down or log out of the computer when you have a document opened that you have not saved you get a pop up over the file that you have not saved saying that you will lose the changes you have made to the document in the last 6 seconds, if you close now. Then it gives you the options of canceling the log out, continuing and losing your data, or save it... If you open a window and go to another workspace and try to shut down, nothing will happen, what it should do is bring you to the workspace where the error message has popped up... Also, you will no longer be able to click on the panels, or any icons on your desktop. Okay here are the steps.** 1. Create a new File, anywhere, in Gedit. 2. Type some stuff. Do not save it. 3. Go to another workspace. 4. Attempt to Shutdown your computer. 5. My experience was the following: after the latest Hardy updates, the situation was the same as before (neither suspend nor recovery worked). That just means that you have gedit window open somewhere, with an unsaved document. Close it and you should be fine. It is just being extra careful, even with auto_save_session. Update/more info: It looks like my libxslt1.1 was from hardy-security, and was incompatible with the libxslt1-dev. Using aptitude gave me the option of downgrading libxslt1.1, and then libxslt1-dev was happy. A further apt-get -f dist-upgrade (or aptitude) doesn't try to re-fetch the libxslt1.1 from security. [Bug 336117] Re: libxslt1-dev won't install, depends on wrong libxslt1.1
This is what was causing the problem, in /etc/apt/apt.conf: APT::Default-Release "hardy"; I put that in so I wouldn't accidentally get packages from hardy- backports except when I explicitly asked for them, but I guess it was also blocking hardy-security, which was definitely not the intent. So this was my error, not a packaging bug; Mackenzie helped me set up pinning so I could set priorities for hardy-security and hardy-updates as well as hardy. [Bug 346885] [NEW] Ethernet device's number increases by one after reboot (via-rhine)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: udev I upgraded from Intrepid to jaunty and ended up with no network. It turned out udev had renamed eth0 to eth1, so my /etc/network/interfaces no longer worked. (This is a desktop machine with only one ethernet interface, a Via-rhine chip on the motherboard.) Removing /etc/udev/conf.d/70-persistent-net.rules fixed the problem and on the next reboot my ethernet card was back on eth0. The MAC address hadn't changed -- I'll attach the 70-persistent-net.rules to show that both entries had the same MAC address. This is the same issue as in bugs 153727, bug 145382 and bug 208103, except that in Jaunty the Via-rhine networking chip is now triggering it, which never happened before. [Bug 329106] Re: upgrading to Jaunty renamed eth0 to eth1
Something that wasn't entirely clear to me before, but maybe should have been: the problem may just be in the syntax of the rule that's generated during the upgrade. (I used do-release-upgrade to go from intrepid to jaunty.) Before the boot, here's the rule that's in 70-persistent-net.rules: # Converted from /etc/iftab on upgrade SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:50:8d:c0:b9:30", ATTRS{type}=="1", NAME="eth0" After boot, that rule is still there but this one has been added: # PCI device 0x1106:0x3065 (via-rhine) SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:50:8d:c0:b9:30", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1" If I edit the file, remove the first rule, change the second to use eth0 instead of eth1, and reboot, the device stays as eth0 and everything works correctly. (I tried running on /sys/class/net/eth0 too, but the results didn't look interesting, pretty much like that first file I attached.) ** Attachment added: "udevadm on eth1 with old udev rule, device already renamed, no net" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24317111/udevadm-eth1.out -- upgrading to Jaunty renamed eth0 to eth1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/329106 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

And here's one after booting from the rewritten rule, device on eth0 and working, testing /class/net/eth0. (I also have the opposite tests, of eth1 when the device is eth0 and vice versa, and of eth2 when the device is eth1 -- let me know if you want to see those). Would it be any help to disable the udev and networking scripts in /etc/init.d to try to get a situation closer to what's actually happening on boot? [Bug 345224] Re: Xorg randomly freezes (100% CPU)
This sounds like the same bug I filed as bug 347078 (I did try to search first, but didn't find this one for some reason). It's a jaunty showstopper for me because it can't go for more than a few hours without locking up (sometimes only a few minutes). Same symptoms Lev describes: it will randomly start taking around 99% CPU, doesn't listen to any input except mouse movements -- no keyboard events or mouse clicks, but it can sort of follow mouse movements, with a lot of lag. The only fix is rebooting; Xorg isn't killable once this happens, even with -9. On the other hand, my stack trace (if I ssh in from another box and attach to the Xorg process) is different from Lev's (it's attached in bug 347078). Can I ask why this bug is marked incomplete? I don't see any pending requests, but I'd be happy to chime in with more system data if any is needed. -- Xorg randomly freezes (100% CPU) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 345224] Re: Xorg randomly freezes (100% CPU)
I'm not certain -- the stack traces are different. But I'm curious: I see it in my own locally built 2.6.28.7 kernel on Jaunty as well as in the standard Jaunty 2.6.28-5 kernel, but I don't see it under the exact same 2.6.28.7 kernel on Intrepid. [Bug 370735] Re: terminated on stack smashing detected message
Building the hardy package on hardy with dpkg-buildpackage also results in a binary that gives the stack-smashing error (though the hardy binary package worked fine). Building with -fno-stack-protector as part of CFLAGS makes it ignore the stack smashing, and the program works again. My guess (I don't know how to check this) is that the default setting for -fno-stack-protector changed on the machines used to produce jaunty binary packages, relative to the machines used for intrepid packages (but that it didn't change on hardy or intrepid themselves). But I've found the cause of the problem. gmemusage assumes that the names read from /proc/*/status can fit in 14 characters (including the null), but some of them are actually 15 characters (so 16 with the null). I'm attaching a patch. I've separated the number out into a #define in case it changes again. Is this size documented anywhere, or set in any system include file? As long as I was making a patch I also fixed a couple of warnings and some unsafe behavior (changed strcpy to strncpy). ** Attachment added: "Fix the stack smashing, plus a couple of other items" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28828334/stacksmash.diff -- terminated on stack smashing detected message https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370735 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 37527] Re: Unable to install initramfs-tools in Dapper 64
I was the user in question, and I'll be happy to help test a fix. I agree that the problem seems to be the /target/lib files not being installed when there's already a /boot with kernels in it. If it matters, it's possible there were already some files related to the new kernel there, because this was a second attempt at installing, after the first attempt died due to a lack of adequate space on /boot. That may be why I saw the problem this time when I didn't see it during my dapper or edgy installs on this machine. The workaround suggested by BitJam worked for me as well: I restarted the installation using only /, not telling it about the existing /boot, then declined to install grub (why does it claim that's a fatal error?), then booted into another system to move the new kernel files into the real /boot partition and edited menu.lst to point to them. -- Unable to install initramfs-tools in Dapper 64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/37527 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

To anyone still fighting this bug, I might have a clue. I just upgraded to Feisty to see if the bug might be fixed. I plugged in an mp3 player which had almost always triggered the "dead device" I/O errors in edgy, then checked dmesg. It didn't show up as sde as it should have -- but it gave a much more helpful error message. Like a dufus I forgot to write down the exact error message, and now I'm no longer seeing it, but it had something to do with "not enough power." All my testing has been through unpowered hubs. That was never a problem in the past, but maybe the kernel has become more picky about that recently. [Bug 125691] Re: firefox can't print in landscape mode
I forgot to mention that I'm on feisty and I was seeing this on two machines. But after reading some more related bugs, I tried some experiments. On one machine, I tried printing from a self-built firefox (1.8 branch). That firefox was able to produce a landscape .ps file -- but after exiting and going back to feisty's firefox, that firefox, too, was able to produce landscapes, where it hadn't been able to for several weeks. On the other machine, I rebooted into etch, using a shared $HOME, and tried from there. Etch's iceweasel was able to produce a landscape .ps. Then I rebooted back into feisty, and now feisty's firefox could print landscape too. And I could even switch between portrait and landscape and both of them worked. If I may speculate wildly (after reading bug #34112), could it be that there's some file or dir under $HOME that firefox isn't creating right, but once it's created, firefox behaves itself? This might also explain why not everyone sees it. [Bug 155681] Re: emacs22 and python-mode do not play together
Can someone clarify the current recommended workaround? I installed gutsy (as an upgrade to feisty, where I had emacs21 and python-mode installed) on 10/29, after Reinhard Tartler's check-in, but I still hit this problem. So I tried quitting emacs then aptitude remove python-mode (which also took pymacs with it), but after restarting emacs, I still get the same error when I open a python script. Anyone frustrated with why fixing a simple build problem is apparently against Ubuntu rules might find it cathartic to read the discussion going on at http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/blog/2007/12/ubuntu_innovates_excuses.html and my own humble contribution at http://shallowsky.com/blog/linux /ubuntu-aumix.html Incidentally, it's not clear how a fix for a build problem could be tested in Hardy first -- Hardy probably has a new version of aumix already. [Bug 153727] Re: Ethernet device's number increases by one after every reboot
I'm seeing this too, on gutsy with a prism54 card and 2.6.23.8 or 2.6.24-rc3 kernel. (Ubuntu's 2.6.22 kernel doesn't boot on this machine.) The only solution I found was to rm /etc/udev/75-persistent-net-generator.rules then fix 70-persistent-net.rules by hand to force it to eth1 or eth0. Could this be related to the issue in bug 31502, where a wireless network card reports the wrong MAC address until after the firmware is loaded? [Bug 27323] Re: provide a way to disable drive polling
Aside from any posible future nautilus UI, I'm not seeing from the hal- disable-polling documentation how someone could use it to disable all polling. It looks like you'd have to mount an investigation to figure out which devices were being polled (read the discussion in this bug to see that it's not necessarily straightforward), then write a script to be called at boot time to disable each device one by one. [Bug 211955] [NEW] udev doesn't run ifup for 3c59x ethernet card
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: udev I have a 3com 3c59x cardbus ethernet card which does not get properly enabled (under hardy beta) when it's plugged in (or after boot or suspend/resume). It is being properly assigned to eth0 in 70-persistent-net.rules, but it ends up in a state where it isn't up but isn't quite down either. It shows up in ifconfig eth0, but it's not marked as UP and doesn't have an inet address. If I run ifup eth0, it tells me it's already up; if I run ifdown eth0, it gives an error: SIOCDELRT: No such process, but after that I can run ifup eth0 and it will get an address and be properly marked UP. (I do have both auto eth0 and allow-hotplug eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces.) The problem seems to be that the card starts out in a state that's not completely down, so that when 85-ifupdown.rules tries to run /sbin/start-stop-daemon --start --background --pidfile /var/run/network/bogus --startas /sbin/ifup -- --allow auto eth0 the ifup fails. ifconfig eth0 looks identical after running ifdown, so I'm not sure what is being changed there that makes it possible to run ifup later. A fix is to add a --force to the ifup in 85-ifupdown.rules, i.e. change the line to: ACTION=="add", RUN+="/sbin/start-stop-daemon --start --background --pidfile /var/run/network/bogus --startas /sbin/ifup -- --force --allow auto $env{INTERFACE}" ** Affects: udev (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- udev doesn't run ifup for 3c59x ethernet card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211955 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 212669] Re: newly installed fonts don't show up in hardy
Strike that about xfonts-* packages -- they do work, it's just the ttf packages and msttcorefonts that don't. I've tried dpkg-reconfigure on several different font packages; on dpkg- reconfigure x-ttcidfont-conf, regardless of whether I choose freetype or xtt, it prints: Cleaning up category cmap.. Updating category cmap opendir: No such file or directory I'm guessing this "No such file or directory" may be related to the ttf files not showing up. Searching on that, I found debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=437674 and indeed, the fix found in that file (replace the nonexistent path names with ones that actually exist) seems to cure the problem. It also killed usb-storage: I can no longer mount any external USB storage device (camera, mp3 player, etc.) plugged in after boot time, and I see a variety of different inconsistent error messages in dmesg. Worked fine before the update. Completely different hardware from the original poster (AMD-based x86 system, lspci says the USB controller is a Via VT82x UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 81)). [Bug 54419] Re: usb change between 2.6.15-23 and 2.6.15-26 breaks working setup
Yet another case. It just started happening to me: I've been running Edgy on this machine since shortly after it released, and I use external usb-storage devices (cameras and mp3 players) at least every couple of days, without any problems until today. A few days ago I dist-upgraded and picked up some seemingly innocuous packages: gnupg_1.4.3, tzdata_2007b, mozilla-thunderbird, tcpdump_3.9.4, libxine-main1_1.1.2, libxine1_1.1.2. None of these seem like they could possibly have any effect on the kernel, udev or hal. Yet now, when I plug in my camera or mp3 player (to either a usb2 hub or a usb1 hub, both of which have worked in the past), I get various error messages in dmesg (a little different each time) and /dev/sde either isn't created, or it's created briefly but as soon as anything tries to read from it (e.g. to read the partition table and create sde1), the device disappears again. It's sde because I have a built-in multicard reader (cf, sm, ms, sd/mmc) which takes up sda through d. The four usb multicard devices are seen at boot time and work just fine. It's just hotplugged devices that don't work. Kernel is 2.6.17-11-generic (but the problems happen with -10 too). lspci says the USB controller is a Via VT82x UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 81). After googling and finding lots of people with similar problems and reading their workarounds, I tried modprobe -r ehci_hcd followed by modprobe ehci_hcd, and that worked -- this time, but the pages I found suggest it won't be a reliable fix. And nobody seems to have come up with a way to get the system to do this on its own (well, I suppose I could add a line like modprobe -r ehci_hcd; sleep 10; modprobe ehci_hcd to one of the boot scripts, but ick). Attaching a log of dmesg snippets. If anyone comes up with an explanation for why this might have suddenly started happening, or suggestions for good automated ways of solving it, I'd be most grateful! ** Attachment added: "dmesg snippets" http://librarian.launchpad.net/6769579/usberrs.txt -- usb change between 2.6.15-23 and 2.6.15-26 breaks working setup https://launchpad.net/bugs/54419 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 73160] Re: Wacom support should work out of the box
For anyone stumbling on this bug while trying to get their wacom to work, here's what I had to do on edgy (it's possible that not all the steps are required): 1. Install wacom-tools and xinput 2. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and comment out those ForceDevice lines that say "Tablet PC ONLY". 3. Reconcile the difference between udev creating /dev/input/wacom and xorg.conf using /dev/wacom: you can either change xorg.conf, change /etc/udev/rules.d/65-wacom.rules, or symlink /dev/input/wacom to /dev/wacom (that's what I did for testing, but it won't survive a reboot, so I'll have to pick a device name and make udev and X consistent). A useful tool for testing: /usr/X11R6/bin/xinput list (part of the xinput package).
