Sorry to say that this seems worse with jaunty. I've seen it before on laptops, but never on my desktop until now, when a jaunty upgrade triggered it. This machine uses a VIA Rhine II on the motherboard, no other network cards, and it didn't trigger any network card renaming under feisty, gutsy, hardy or intrepid. No hardware has changed. Removing 70-persistent-net.rules and rebooting got the network working again.
