[Bug 202454] Re: Scrolling continues after releasing arrow key

2008-11-21 Thread gpothier
It happens to me out of the box with Intrepid. This is on an MSi Wind,
so I suppose the "underpoweredness" of the machine is an important
factor. But this should not happen. It is particularly noticable here,
with almost any webpage. For instance in this launchpad page, if I'm at
the top of the page and press the down key until the scollbar reaches
the middle position, and then release the key, scrolling continues for
*several seconds* until the bottom of the page is reached.

[Bug 364786] Re: openoffice slide show doesn't work with dual screen

2009-06-22 Thread gpothier
Hi, it seems the problem is caused by the openoffice.org-gtk package.
Uninstalling it solves the problem, installing it again brings the
problem back. I also tried with the upstream version, and the problem
does not occur (and there is no gnome integration).

However, it is present now in Karmic.

[Bug 364786] [NEW] openoffice slide show doesn't work with dual screen

2009-04-21 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Dell Latitude D810, ATI Radeon Mobility X600, using open-source
driver.
Monitors are configured with xrandr, internal monitor (1920x1200) on the right
of external monitor (1680x1050).

With ooimpress, when I attempt to start the slideshow, only two
scrollbars appear on the monitor on which the slideshow is supposed to
appear; whatever was displayed on the screen prior to starting the
slideshow remains displayed, but cannot be interacted with (ie., there
is a window with no content except the scrollbars displayed on top of
the whole monitor, and it fails to paint anything so whatever was drawn
on the screen remains there). The content of the slides do not appear,
and I cannot exit the "slide show" by pressing Escape or Alt+F4, I have
to use xkill to get rid of it.

When only one monitor is configured, the slide show works without
problems.

[Bug 315271] [NEW] hal-info update causes resume from suspend issue

2009-01-08 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal-info

An update to hal-info causes a strange behavior on a Dell Latitude D810 laptop:
resuming from suspend with an external monitor plugged in causes the internal
monitor to not display anything, regardless of how the external monitor is
configured (clone, big desktop, off).
A few details:
- The backlight seems to be turned on.
- Before the hal-info update, when resuming from suspend, the text-console
blinking cursor briefly appears on the internal monitor before the desktop
shows up; after the update, the cursor appears on the external monitor.

This is 100% reproducible. Upgrading from hal-info 20081013-0ubuntu3
(the version that is on the Intrepid CD) to 20081124-0ubuntu1~intrepid
makes the problem appear, downgrading to the former makes the problem
disappear.

An update to my situation on the MSI Wind: I was wrong when I said "out

[Bug 262152] Re: brings up both wired and wireless interfaces; hard to pick just one through the UI

2009-01-14 Thread gpothier
There is a similar report of Fedora:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=454955
There the devs say it is intended behavior for NM to connect to all networks
that are marked "auto connect".
However, I think there should be an option to only allow one connection at a
time, with some priorities (eg. wired has more priority than wireless). There
are clearly situations were you do not want to have two connections at the same
time, like, eg., the one mentioned by Michael Milligan above. Moreover there is
a cognitive issue because nm-applet doesn't seem to know what icon to display:
a strenght meter or a wire; sometimes it is one and sometimes the other.

[Bug 315271] Re: hal-info update causes resume from suspend issue

2009-03-01 Thread gpothier
Hmmm, I spoke too fast, sometimes when the external monitor is unplugged when I
resume from suspend, the internal monitor fails to turn on. It turns on when I
plug in the external monitor and activate it with xrandr (I have a keyboard
shortcut to activate it so I can do that with the internal screen turned off).
Moreover, a rather unhealthy stroboscopic blinking of random white bands occurs
on the internal monitor when I go to suspend (it stops when the machine reaches
the suspended state).

[Bug 347329] [NEW] ACPI events not correctly handled with KDE4

2009-03-23 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

OS: Kubuntu Jaunty AMD64
Hardware: Dell Studio Hybrid
Problem: Power button actions configured in KDE4 System settings not obeyed

In System Settings/Advanced/Power management, I set all profiles to suspend to
RAM on pressing power button. However, pressing the power button immediately
shuts down the computer.
It seems the problem comes from the scripts in /etc/acpi. For instance,
/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh tests conditions that apply to KDE3, not KDE4 (eg. kded
instead of kded4, testing for the klaptopdaemon module instead of powerdevil).
As none of the conditions apply, the script eventually ends up calling
/sbin/shutdown, thus not letting powerdevil handling the event.

Workaround: Commenting out the call to /sbin/shutdown, the policy
configured in system settings is obeyed.

are the xorg log and configuration.
Note that this worked fine in 8.10 with the same hardware.

The system freezes rather frequently when either plugging/unplugging the DC

* When the freeze occurs after resuming from suspend, it often results
in a hard lock (magic SysReq keys have no effect). Sometimes, though, it
just freezes for around 30s-1min, and then unfreezes. In these cases,
pressing the caps lock/num lock keys correclty affect the indicator
leds. In these cases, I usually find messages like this in the syslog:

kernel is 2.6.17-7-generic.
Additionally, the kernel doesn't react to SysReq keys (tried SysReq-O,
SysReq-I).
It used to work in dapper but with the 2.6.16.20 kernel, home built.

[Bug 61803] Volume hotkeys fail when focus is on external display

Public bug reported:

Config: Edgy with kernel 2.6.17-8-generic, Dell Latitude D810, KDE, dual

Same problem here with Edgy and latest updates. Skype 1.3.0_53, kernel

No VMWare, it was never installed on my machine.
For what it's worth, the log shows a firmware error in the wireless card just
before the last hang I experienced. I don't know if it was so for all hangs.
The hangs occur when certain contacts initiate a chat. It seems that other
contacts can initiate a chat without causing any problem, but I'm not 100% sure.
I don't know if voice calls cause the hang because I never receive any.

[Bug 41049] Re: Live CD hangs on ThinkPad X31 (Dapper Beta-1)

2007-05-13 Thread gpothier
Same thing here with a Feisty CD on an Athlon 1700+ desktop. I checked the CD
for errors and performed a memtest - all ok.
Basically the issue is that the CD drive keeps spinning forever, even without
launching the installer, and system responsivity gets worse over time, even
doing nothing.
I tried killing some processes (NetworkManager, screen saver and various other)
but nothing improved.
How can I know which process is accessing the CD drive?

[Bug 116416] guidance-power-manager and kpowersave stop working

2007-05-23 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Both guidance-power-manager and kpowersave stop working after some time in
Feisty (I am not running both at the same time, I just tried one and then the
other). In particular, they stop reacting to the lid close event, which is
supposed to suspend my laptop. Killing and restarting guidance of kpowersave
temporarily solves the problem, until they stop working again.
It seems that this is not a HAL nor ACPI problem: the lid button events appear
in "lshal -m" and in /var/log/acpid. And I can always suspend by pressing the
suspend special key.
With guidance, the following lines appears in /var/log/acpid:

[Bug 13671] Re: slocate daily anacron job makes system feel slow

2007-08-09 Thread gpothier
I tried to measure the impact of ionice on updatedb when running in parallel
with a full Eclipse workspace rebuild, a CPU- and disk-intensive process.
Results below, there are two measurements per item (this is Gutsy on a Pentium
M 2GHz notebook, 7200RPM disk):
Build alone: 50s, 52s
Build with updatedb: 3min20s, 5min17s
Build with ionice -c3 updatedb: 4min30s, 2min44s

So there appears to be only a minimal improvement with ionice, if there is an
improvement at all (given the variability of the result, I would have to
perform more measurements per item).
The man page of ionice states that it works with the CFQ IO scheduler. How do I
know which scheduler I am running, and how do I change it?

I think it would be really nice to solve this updatedb issue, as it
really does give users a negative sensation. I use to completely disable
updatedb when I install Ubuntu for non-geeks. Anyway, I think most non-
geeks will never use locate...

[Bug 123752] Re: [needs-packaging] rlocate should be available as an slocate replacement

There's this entry: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RLocate
But it is quite old...
I agree that rlocate would be a very welcome improvement.

[Bug 13671] Re: slocate daily anacron job makes system feel slow

2007-08-09 Thread gpothier
Well I could have searched a bit myself: it seems I am using the CFQ scheduler:
$ cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
noop anticipatory deadline [cfq]

(I guess the brackets show the selected scheduler).

So it seems that ionice is not doing its job properly. Any idea about why? This
is the command I used to launch updatedb:
$ sudo /usr/bin/ionice -c3 updatedb

My /etc/updatedb.conf specifies a niceness of 10.

[Bug 130253] Re: Kubuntu Gutsy: Volume OSD is too small

2007-08-10 Thread gpothier
Okay, I've had a look at the kmilo code. It seems the OSD is configurable
through skins, however the choice of the skin is hardcoded. A possibility would
be:
- implement several skins (for now there is only one in the kmilo code base, I
guess the skin used in Kubuntu simply replaces the default skin of kmilo)
- add a configuration module for kmilo where one can choose the skin; that
module would be available from the KDE system settings window.

I can do that, but I would like to know if it would be welcome by the
kubuntu maintainers; otherwise I'll just compile another skin and
replace kmilo on my own box, without creating a config module.

[Bug 194797] Re: [kubuntu hardy] Cannot set volume higher than 48% with hot keys

Ah yes, now that you say it I have something similar here: using the hot keys
adjust both volume and something named "3d control - depth", and when the
latter reaches 100% the volume doesn't increase.

This is hardy with latest updates.

[Bug 196375] [NEW] [Hardy] knetworkmanager keeps asking for WEP key although it knows it

2008-02-27 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

This is a somewhat random bug in Kubuntu Hardy.
Quite often, when the network manager tries to connect to my WEP-encrypted
network, the connection attemp times out on DHCP and then knetworkmanager pops
up the "Connect to wireless network" dialog where I must enter the WEP key
(which seem to indicate that it tried to configure the network interface with a
wrong key, hence the DHCP timeout). The funny thing is that in the dialog's
passphrase/key field, my hex key is already correctly filled in. The only thing
that is incorrect is that the encryption type is set to WEP passphrase instead
of WEP hex. I just have to select WEP hex in the combo and validate, and the
connection succeeds.
Now the strange thing is that it doesn't happen all the time. Typically it
happens when I first start the computer. Then I can suspend/resume many times
without problems. It just happens sometimes...
How can I help debug this?

[Bug 201005] [NEW] OpenOffice does not save background image of master slide

2008-03-11 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Hardy, OpenOffice 2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3
Steps to reproduce:

- Create a new presentation
- Go to View > Master > Slide Master
- Right click on the slide, then Slide > Set background picture for slide...
- Select some picture: the picture appears as the master slide's background,
and thus as all slides' background
- Save presentation (in odp format)
- Close OpenOffice
- Reopen the presentation: no more background picture

Ironically, if you save the presentation as ppt instead of odp, the
background picture is saved all right...

grabbed the network. I did not find anything obviously wrong in the log
file, but maybe somebody in the know can sort it out.

Is there any additional information I can provide?

[Bug 92563] x broken in feisty with radeon driver

2007-03-15 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

After updating my Feisty install today and rebooting, X fails to start.
First it complained that it could not load the xinerama module so I commented
it out in the modules section. Then I get the following error (the full error

[Bug 100011] Feisty: kde power manager settings no longer enforced

2007-04-02 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance-powermanager

Up to a few days ago the settings of KDE Power manager were enforced: I had
configured suspend on lid close and hibernate when battery drops below 5min.
Now those settings are no longer enforced: when I close the lid the screen
turns off but the machine does not suspend, and I experienced once that the
machine ran out of battery power and simply turned off instead of hibernating.
How can I help testing?

[Bug 89291] Re: Kubuntu Feisty does not ask for bluetooth pin. Pinhelpers seem not to work

2007-03-27 Thread gpothier
Still no luck after restarting the machine. I do not see any pinhelper
or passkey-agent process (tried 'ps aux |grep pin' and 'ps aux |grep
pass'). When is the pin helper started? How can I start it by hand?

[Bug 89291] Re: Kubuntu Feisty does not ask for bluetooth pin. Pinhelpers seem not to work

2007-03-27 Thread gpothier
I was able to pair with my phone starting passkey-agent by hand. So the
problem is that passkey-agent is not started on boot. Which script is in
charge of starting the passkey-agent?

Software versions:
bluez-utils 3.9-0ubuntu2
bluez-pin 0.30-2.1ubuntu3

[Bug 89291] Re: Kubuntu Feisty does not ask for bluetooth pin. Pinhelpers seem not to work

2007-03-26 Thread gpothier
In today's updates there was a mention of a change regarding pin helper
in bluetooth packages:

debian/patches/010-kubuntu-pin-helper.patch:
 - updated for with 3.9

As far as I'm concerned I still cannot pair with my bluetooth phone
(SonyEricsson K700i).

I also tried "security auto" in hcid.conf so that the local pin is used,
but I still could not connect. Is there something special to do to use
the pin stored in /etc/bluetooth/pin or the one in "passkey" in
hcid.conf?

[Bug 94083] [Feisty] 2.6.20-12 does not boot

2007-03-20 Thread gpothier
Public bug reported:

My machine fails to boot after updating to kernel 2.6.20-12. The exact error
message wasn't written to the log but it was something along the lines of
"udevd-event: execution of /sbin/modprobe failed". It seems this occurred while
the kernel was initializing the USb subsystem.
I can boot wihtout problem with 2.6.20-11.

Note that this dmesg output is with the booted 2.6.20-11 kernel.
As for the log with 2.6.20-12 I cannot have it, it seems the error occurs

Which package should I reinstall to reinstall modprobe?
Meanwhile I reinstalled linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic, and I get the following
warning message during install:
Your /etc/kernel-img.conf needs to be updated. Read grub's NEWS.Debian[1]
file and follow its instructions.

 1. /usr/share/doc/grub/NEWS.Debian.gz

You shouldn't call /sbin/update-grub. Please call /usr/sbin/update-grub instead!

I'll reboot now and try to grab the log...
