[Bug 149503] Re: Changing network settings requires reboot :Feisty

2008-07-28 Thread doobydave
New kernel on Hardy (.19)seems to require a /etc/init.d/networking
restart before internet happens.

Unless this phenomenon has been caused by me disabling the wireless to
get internet through the wired ethernet, then enabling it again.

It says it has connected to the wireless network on boot, but nothing
get through.

Not sure its the new kernel. Went back to .18 and problem still

No joy at all with wpa but will seem to work on wep after the

I appreciate there is inconsistent clarity. I apologise for my part in
that.

At the time you labeled this 'fix released' the issue appeared fixed,
however I subsequently noticed the same behaviour with an alternate
user.

I will try Intrepid as I am having the same issues with Hardy.

2008-11-29 Thread doobydave
I have yet to try intrepid, but thought I'd let you know that the kernel
update 2.6.24-22 on Hardy has got us to the point where we were in Gutsy
shortly after this was labeled as 'fix released'

That is :-
With the default user - everything is almost perfect (with the exception that
an affected screensaver will not preview full-screen *the first time* clicked
(eg 4d hypertorus) and at least one (BioF) will also not preview within the
'screensaver preferences' window if opened with that screensaver already
selected. When re-selected (both in windowed and full-screen preview,
everything behaves ok Also, Hypertorus is still red, not multi-coloured.

With a new user - Affected screensavers will freeze almost randomly as
before.

[Bug 195975] Re: Wired connection can't reach internet after wireless connection

there is a DNS error so updates and normal internet appear inaccesible)

[Bug 27508] Re: Only 60 Hz display refresh available from gnome screen resolution utility

2008-05-14 Thread doobydave
On freshly installed + updated 7.10 64-bit there are still issues.

Monitor detection fails, but I can select exact type within the 'screens
and graphics' GUI (iiyama VM pro 510). This causes load of modline to be
added to xorg.conf

Trouble is they are not accessible - even after reboot.

I am using the restricted nvdia driver with an 8400 series card

[Bug 27508] Re: Only 60 Hz display refresh available from gnome screen resolution utility

2008-05-14 Thread doobydave
After disabling the nvidia driver and re-selecting my monitor - the
refresh rate choices are different, but even if I select 85Hz, log out
and in again - it doesn't work.

Interestingly, the other refresh rate choices have vanished from the
'screens and graphic' section leaving only 75 Hz. (the only choice
available from the 'screen resolution' gui)

With the nvidia driver, the choices were all much lower eg. 50 54.

[Bug 187540] Re: Gnome-panel freeze when 8 windows are open when the panel is vertical

2009-01-08 Thread doobydave
Would it not be possible to prompt a user to install the patch the
moment they decide to move the panel to a vertical position?

At each time a new user experiences this bug enough to be able to find
details about it (let's face it, it's not very clear why the machine
hangs - and only after it has occurred enough might a user guess where
the problem lies), they will be very disappointed to learn how old it
is.

I know this isn't the place to vent any frustration, but frankly I am
getting tired with Ubuntu's relentless 'progress' (well, the
implementation of many vista-like "Are you sure you're sure?" dialogs)
rather than fixing the mess made by two releases a year. Having seen
several bugs die with the discontinuation of support for previous
versions, I'm not so sure that there are sufficient resources to achieve
a single bug-free distro.

[Bug 89024] Re: glxinfo error. ati 9600pro

2007-10-15 Thread doobydave
Ok, so fglrx seems to work ok on Feisty (except for the 'switch user'
function and the entries in Xorg.0.log - maybe that's normal) so
probably nothing to do with the kernel.

Just to reiterate, the 4dhypertorus is always red (with the 'ati'
driver). Unless this has been changed for Gutsy i'm sure it should be
multi-coloured.

2007-10-03 Thread doobydave
Sorry for the delay - I had to reinstall due to ancient partition table
errors on my drive. Upgraded my Edgy to Feisty and consequently was
getting a FSCK error due to Gusty install changing the UUID of its
partition.

In window with 64M aperture.

Most of the time it (4d hypertorus) freezes. Occasionally it works. When
it is working, i can produce a freeze by moving the mouse over the
'power management' and 'close' buttons.

If 'PREVIEW' is clicked when is hasn't frozen - it (often) works
PERFECTLY full screen. Even moving the mouse over the prev/next/leave
buttons does not affect it (previously this used to cause a freeze
unless 'option PCI' was included - in which case it was very juddery but
didnt freeze). Also, it is fine when using the previous/next buttons -
the chosen screensavers seem to not suffer the freeze.

If the screensaver freezes fullscreen - they all will freeze fullscreen
(the 3d ones - only atunnel (not openGL?) works from the first 5). If it
works fullscreen - they all seem to work.

The first time i ran glxgears i got the gart error, however i have not got this
again unless i run glxgears when the screensaver is being displayed.

[Bug 89024] Re: glxinfo error. ati 9600pro

2007-10-04 Thread doobydave
My hunch.

This problem has existed since the exclusion of the k7 kernel
optimisations.

fglrx only worked on dapper with these optimisations. (i had to compile
it though) Ever since it has been unworkable.

If you (the 'ati' driver developers) are suffering difficulties and ATI
are suffering difficulties (with fglrx) then might not the problem lie
at a deeper level?

I've scoured the internet on occasions and found a few very similar
problems, but (the ones in english) are mostly dead ends. It might be a
bit cynical but i suspect most of these people have either gone back to
xp or bought an nvidia.

I would like to help resolve this but not sure who to report it to.

It would be interesting to try the card on an intel board - which i
could do although not immediately.

Please tell me if i am barking up the wrong tree. :)

Or, if you want to borrow my video card...

[Bug 193098] [NEW] grub using wrong menu.lst after gutsy upgrade?

2008-02-18 Thread doobydave
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

After upgrade from Feisty>Gutsy (64bit), I was surprised to not see the
new Gutsty kernel in the o/s list on boot.

The new kernel appears in the /boot/grub/menu.lst in the Gutsy
filesystem partition but, (I'm guessing), grub appears to be using the
one from within my ubuntustudio install (- in adjacent partition)

This is on a laptop with only one hard disc (sata)

I'm sorry if this is a side effect of some of the other reported bugs
currently being addressed, but as it's not exactly the same as any of

Actually, I don't think it's entirely fixed. Some of the GL screensavers
preview for half a second and then freeze/disappear. They do the same
fullscreen too.

The issue is not solved, Possibly it occurs less though, as the screensavers
occasionally work for longer.

Its bizarre that one minute they will freeze yet another time they will
go for much longer.

2007-09-06 Thread doobydave
Have noticed something else strange.

The screen resolution settings under system>preferences>screen
resolution work better than the ones under system>administration>screens
and graphics.

When trying 1600x1200 @60Hz in the >screens and graphics section, it
fails with the grey&white screen with an 'x' cursor. Before update this
used to hard lock the machine - as mentioned above. Now the cancel
button returns to the previous resolution successfully.

Trying 1600x1200 @60Hz in the >screen resolution section behaves as
expected. Will try the different refresh rates next.

Right. Just had another fiddle.

When previewing screensavers full-screen without Option "BusType" "PCI",
they will freeze/disappear with mouse activity over the three buttons in
the top right.

With Option "BusType" "PCI" they will stutter but not usually freeze.

When not in full-screen, they are more likely to freeze, but possibly
still better than without Option "BusType" "PCI".

[Bug 154504] Re: Gnome-panel hangs and allocates all possible ram.

2008-02-28 Thread doobydave
Does this need any more info or confirmation?

It happens to me too. I notice the icons are smaller than they were in
Feisty.

It is as though the button sizing function thinks there is only half the
height in the (vertical) panel than there actually is. Each time a new
window is opened, the icons shrink yet more until the 8th is opened at
which point gnome-panel starts eating cpu usage and ram. (xorg cpu usage
also up a bit too).

[Bug 89024] Re: glxinfo error. ati 9600pro

2007-09-23 Thread doobydave
With either of the options above the glxgears GART error seems to
disappear - however the screensavers still frequently freeze within the
window soon after selection.

The screensavers will not now preview fullscreen - i believe one of the
many updates has caused this - so i cannot test the mouse over the
previous, next and fullscreen buttons. (one of the few things that always
seemed to cause the screensavers to freeze)

Could the AGP aperture size setting in bios be responsible?

Please let me know if I can be of any help fixing this.

[Bug 95333] Re: firefox crash on Edgy login

2007-03-24 Thread doobydave
I will have a go with the debug stuff later.

I suspect firefox was open when i shut down. I have been making use of
the 'restore session' facility. I know its bad practice, but its a
useful feature.

[Bug 63320] Re: XServer don't detect Display Resolution (not a driver problem)

2007-03-21 Thread doobydave
I have iiyama vision master pro 510.

Dapper used to auto-detect it (but only with K7 kernel optimisation).
Edgy, however, does not.

Tried the fix (on Edgy)

but it only worked until reboot. I now get :-

[Bug 582570] [NEW] VERY slow boot, no battery icon in panel

2010-05-18 Thread doobydave
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Occurs in both 9.10 and 10.04 though with slightly different behaviour (64-bit
editions). I haven't tried the 32-bit editions, but this definitely wasn't a
problem in 8.04 x64
In 10.04 a dialog box appears after password-entry relating to the stuck
process.

4+ min boot time, no battery icon in gnome panel and the brightness keys do not
function.
Machine is an Acer 5685.

No extra info, but several other people reporting similar thing here

[Bug 582570] Re: VERY slow boot, no battery icon in panel

2010-05-25 Thread doobydave
Hi, Forgive me, I may have jumped the gun somewhat.

In 8.04 x64 I get a webcam configuration error. My laptop has a
revolving webcam, and I suspect this has a loose connection, as the
login screen and login happen much quicker if I fiddle with the camera.

[Bug 991068] [NEW] Ubuntu wont boot or install due to incorrect monitor setup

2012-04-29 Thread doobydave
Public bug reported:

As summary, monitor displays dark purple flashing screen.

Am unable to use console ctrl+alt+f1 - though maybe it's merely
invisible rather than not there. - I could possibly test this via a
blind login and reset command

Video card is an nvidia 8800 gtx, monitor is an iiyama vision master pro
510 being used with a dvi to rgb converter.

Tested on 12.04 x64, but this issue has been the same for all releases
since 10.04

[Bug 991068] Re: Ubuntu wont boot or install due to incorrect monitor setup

2012-04-29 Thread doobydave
I am unable to run any commands.

I did switch to another monitor after hitting ctrl-alt-f1, and
surprising there was a flashing cursor with which I could type. There
was no login prompt.. Ctrl-alt-f7 yielded a portion of what appears to
be the hung loading screen.
