I also reported bug #87954 which is the error message on edgy.

Installing fglrx on dapper removes this error but i guess it is
something inherent in the ati driver.

However, on edgy, i install fglrx (from the repo using the cchtml wiki) and x
will not start
*end of Xorg.0.log*

Fatal server error:
no screens found

If I manually install the drivers, using method 2 from the same wiki, or
envy - i get what seems to be a success:-

:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

:~$ glxinfo |grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

but there is still reference to mesa in Xorg.0.log :-

(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so
(II) Module GLcore: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3
(II) GLX: Initialized MESA-PROXY GL provider for screen 0
error opening security policy file /usr/lib/xserver/SecurityPolicy

and consequently i have retarded openGL

If there is anything else you would like to know, please ask. I have
been taking snapshots of these os's so nothing should take too much time
