[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-05 Thread ART
Using kernel 2.6.28rc6 and new drivers mesa 7.3 from xorg edgers of
jaunty (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive) glxgears reports
around 1100 FPS. (intrepid just 600)

1)I compiled kernel using kernelcheck utility (http://kcheck.sourceforge.net/)
2) Add xorg edgers repository

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ubuntu jaunty main

I'm using ubuntu intrepid 8.10. Only the xorg drivers are from a jaunty
repository. The kernel was compiled in 8.10 using kernelcheck
utility.(It is easy. The tool downloads sources and generates deb files)

JoseLVG: I suppose that kernelcheck use well-known distro kernel
templates.

Biji: xorg edgers provides also 64 bit packages.

Instead of building the kernel it is possible to install kernel from
jaunty and also works.

[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy

2008-05-06 Thread Art
Thanks Tom! You're a genius. I can confirm that this fixes the font
issues. It also fixes issues with blocky fonts I had in printed output
which I also had in Gutsy. That's a huge help.

I found deleting the libQt files in the mathematica distribution and
linking to the libQt files (.so.4) in /usr/lib also works. If I didn't
replace them, the printing box came up with Qt widgets rather than Gnome
widgets. It also defaulted to printing to file rather than to Cups.
Maybe Tom this will solve your printing problem.

[Bug 214683] Re: [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad

2008-04-27 Thread Art
I have the same problem as jeromek in an upgrade from ubuntu 7.10 to
8.04, x86_64 with nvidia card. My font path was the same as jeromek and
I don't think it changed from 7.10 to 8.04.

I can also confirm Bartek on a 32bit laptop in similar upgrade. My
experience with Wolfram support is that they don't have the resources to
help debug distribution related bugs.

I have nothing to add. Mathematica can find the ttf fonts. Maybe the
switch to Xorg 1.4 from 1.3 did it and some broken interaction with
Mathematica's private java jre.

[Bug 214683] Re: [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad

2008-04-27 Thread Art
I see some very minor improvements by adding ~/.fonts.conf (attached).
You may also want to look through your /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* and 53
-monospace-lcd-filter.conf. There seem to be a lot of reports of bugs
with fonts in Hardy. This doesn't antialias the blue Input
unfortunately. There are a number of other remaining problems (just
browse the Documentation for a sampling of fonts).

My guess now is that this is an Ubuntu, not Mathematica bug, so
hopefully we can fix it as other font issues are resolved.

[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy

2008-04-28 Thread Art
I don't get the X Error messages on Hardy in upgrade from Gutsy on an
amd64. I do get them on a 32-bit laptop in the same upgrade, but I also
got them when on Gutsy and had to use -defaultvisual. On the 32-bit
machine, I have the disappearing text problem described here which I was
able to fix by modifying /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* to the correct ones for
my machine. Maybe the disappearing font issue is not a Mathematica
problem, at least not entirely.

But on both machines, I can confirm the error that the Courier (?) Input
font is not antialiased properly even with changes to /etc/fonts. But I
noticed that it also not aliased on firefox when browsing through the
Mathematica online documentation. Can anyone else confirm this? They
seem to be both screwed up in the same way. I don't remember it being
screwed up on Gutsy with both Firefox 2 or 3b4.

[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy

2008-04-29 Thread Art
I meant if you browse around the documentation in Firefox, the In[] and
Out[] elements are pixelized in Firefox similarly to the Mathematica
notebooks for me, for example, in:

http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/List.html

Other fonts are hinted, others are antialiased properly. I thought maybe
the problems were related.

There is some issue in Hardy which I don't understand with the defaults
in /etc/fonts/conf.d overriding user set defaults (as through
System->Preferences->Appearance). So for me, the defaults were wrong and
were messing up gnome-terminal as well. When I changed these as well as
adding an ~/.fonts.conf, the disappearing fonts were fixed.

For example, try deleting /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* and create
~/.fonts.conf with your hinting, antialiasing and subpixel rendering
settings and see if that helps (and restart X). I used this howto:

[Bug 315710] Re: Linux needs exFAT support

2009-09-19 Thread Art
If there are going to be licensing problems from Microsoft with exFAT,
is it too late to convince the SD Association to use an open file-system
instead? Right now JFFS2 and NILFS come to mind but I'm sure there are
plenty of others for SSDs that could be used as the new standard as
well.

what does "file ./your-file.dmg" prints?

It's possible you're trying to mound a hybrid ISO, which's got hfs+ FS
not in the beginning

2009-09-23 Thread Art
Hi,

I'mactually having similar problem - trying to mound snow leopard
hybrid iso and receiving same error.
I'm sure I'm supplying a proper offset
(http://www.64lines.com/mounting-hfs-plus).

Probably next thing would be to look at hfstools (hfsprogs?) sources.

Lars,

Does your file have proper HFS+ signature at 1024th byte, as per
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn/tn1150.html#VolumeHeader?

[Bug 385974] Re: rdesktop has black cursor instead of white cursor

2009-09-07 Thread art
I'm experiencing the same as NTolerance.

I'd like to add that if I change the Windows 7 Cursors to Inverted, it
becomes outlined in black, with an invisible body. It also looks garbled
with some other cursors, with "garbage pixels" around the cursor. Worse
still, the text input cursor is mangled no matter which cursor theme is
chosen, to the point of barely being able to see/use it.

Painful!

[Bug 136336] Re: Compiz shift-switcher should not scale icons for minimized windows

2009-10-27 Thread Art
"It did something really hacky. Basically when you minimized a window the core
would store a thumbnail of what the window looked like before it minimized. It
was not live."
That's not a bad idea, I think it's still better than showing just an icon.
You could also try having it remember which windows are minimized, then
maximize all the windows, grab the thumbnails then minimize them again.

[Bug 1562396] Re: No sound - ALC260 snd-hda-intel on Vaio VGN-A497XP on MATE 16.4 Final Beta

2016-03-27 Thread Art
Hi Raymond, have now used "Pin Default 0x01014000: [Jack] Line Out at
Ext Rear" (like a headphone socket but at the rear and the visible ring
is yellow) - NOW WE HAVE SOUND ON LEFT CHANNEL !!! Thank you so much -
the linux on this machine is at last usable for daily tasks.

The link you have included:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git/commit/sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c?id=d08c5ef2a039393eaf2ab2152db5f07790fa0f40

speaks of "ALSA: hda - Provide missing pin configs for VAIO with ALC260...
Some models (or maybe depending on BIOS version) of Sony VAIO with ALC260 give
no proper pin configurations as default, resulting in the non-working speaker,
etc. Just provide the whole pin configurations via a fixup."

Is there a way of getting the right channel working as well ? (this
laptop used to have WinXP and the normal headphone socket at the side
working with full Stereo sound). If there is a possibility of getting
full stereo - what is the next thing I should try?

Irrespective if the full stereo is achievable or not - I am very
appreciative of you looking at this problem and getting the laptop to be
usable at last - Thank you again very much.

[Bug 1562396] Re: No sound - ALC260 snd-hda-intel on Vaio VGN-A497XP on MATE 16.4 Final Beta

2016-03-28 Thread Art
Hi Raymond, thank you for the suggestions of things to try.
Also thanks for the tip re David Henningsson's ppa and his hdajackretask:

$sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diwic/hda
$sudo apt-get update

[This is up to 14.04 Trusty but seemed to work well enough on 16.04
Xenial Final Beta]

Played around with it (If one makes a mistake, one can press 'Remove boot
override' button, shut down computer, wait a little,
then power back on - should be back to where you started.

Still - the only sound is the MONO SOUND from the 0x15 at the back
/* LINE-2 is used for line-out in rear */
- {0x15, AC_VERB_SET_PIN_WIDGET_CONTROL, PIN_OUT}.

I don't know enough at this stage to recompile kernel etc in the effort to
re-introduce the 'Alc260 basic model' back in again?
I will leave it at this time, but obviously if you happen to know of any
changes in this situation - would be glad to hear it.
Also if you / anyone else happen to hear of more things to try - please let me
know - will attempt to try them out.
Again, thank you for the help so far.

"Do headphone jack change to true when you plug in headphone?"
The 'headphone' is always present as the only possible output option - it
doesn't vary.

Do. Mic jack or line in jack change to true when you plug in mic?

OK Eureka: we have sound on headphones and laptop's internal speakers!!!
Thank you Raymond for all the help you gave.
As local user, launch hdajackretask:
$ hdajackretask

* Select "show unconnected pins"

* Pin 0x0f override to (dropdown menu) --> Internal Speaker

* Pin 0x10 override to (dropdown menu) --> Internal Speaker (LFE)

* Pin 0x15 override to (dropdown menu) --> Headphone

Still received message:
"tee: /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig: Device or resource busy"
but the above seemed to have worked.

To make this permanent click button:
"Install boot override"

[P.S. was googling the "tee: /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig: Device or
resource busy" message and got inpiration from:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/17sov5/howto_beats_audio_hp_laptop_speakers_on/

- although obviously the link deals with a different model ]

Thank you very much again.

RE microphone:
"and you need to find the mic and internal mic from 0x12, 0x13, 0x14 and 0x16"

Have set pin 0x12 as Microphone and
pin 0x13 as Internal Mic.

For fix please see towards the end of comments here.
But in a nutshell, the fix consisted of:

As local user, launch hdajackretask:
$ hdajackretask

* Select "show unconnected pins"

* Pin 0x0f override to (dropdown menu) --> Internal Speaker

* Pin 0x10 override to (dropdown menu) --> Internal Speaker (LFE)

Still received message:

but the above seemed to have worked.

To make this permanent click button:
"Install boot override"

[Bug 1465072] [NEW] failed to Install

2015-06-14 Thread art
Public bug reported:

USB boot drive seems to have problems.

I tried burning iso image with both Ubuntu and WinX applications. Both
failed in different ways.

I suspect the usb stick is corrupt, but I don't know why the formatting
function doesn't fix that.

I may purchase another usb stick, but it's too late to save Ubuntu 15.4.
Thankfully, I can still boot into WinX - even that didn't work at first.

I was trying to reinstall 15.4 because of the persistent BSODs (black
screens of death). I suspect I have made the matter worse, but I
couldn't find any useful guidance.

I was better off in the 'ol Win95 days - Win98 was a great upgrade.
Alas, the world has passed me by.

Re: [Bug 1465072] Re: failed to Install

2015-06-16 Thread art
Thanks for the response.
I think there were a series of problems in this multi-day effort.
The iso images (I tried 14.4 and 15.4) I got from the Ubuntu d/l site were
corrupt - during the lenghty d/l process.  I didn't check the file size or I
may have know that immediately - I have no clue how to verify the MD5 checksum,
just another stupid amateur.
After using one corrupted image I lost Ubuntu altogether.  No prob, I still had
WinXP.
Since I was now using a different usb 'burner' I suspect the second problem was
not being able to create a "bootable" memory stick.  I think some programs
merely copy the files and don't make the stick bootable.
I purchased a new stick (faster, yay) in all this experimentation.  That didn't
help at all.
I eventually got the original stick to boot and installed both 15.4 (1.19
kernel) and 14.4 (LTS, 3.16 kernel) installed.
Both produce the same result - black screen of death (or desktop lock-up but
with mouse movement).
Since I switched to Ubuntu from Lubuntu I can't find Synaptic before the
lock-up occurs.  Where did the damn menus go?
I wanted to find Synaptic to try to install kernel 3.5.  That the one where
everything seems to work just fine.
The bottom line? Since my 'puter is almost 10 years old I think I'll shop for
another one.  I think a decent refurb can be had for $250.
It will come with Windows installed.  At 62 years old I really don't want to
play with an unstable Linux any more.  Besides, I understand Win 10 will be a
free upgrade.  Perhaps Microsoft will be making the best OS again.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

Subject: [Bug 1465072] Re: failed to Install

Your installation medium is corrupt.  You will need to recreate it and
should then verify it using the check disc option from the boot menu.
If you have done this more than once already then the usb stick must be
bad and you'll need a new one.

[Bug 1398241] [NEW] package language-selector-common 0.129.3 failed to install/upgrade: package language-selector-common is already installed and configured

2014-12-01 Thread art
Public bug reported:

The main problem is that when I attempt to boot from a dvd I get the error:
Can't open /etc/init/init-d
saned disabled: x
I've enabled it through:
sudo gedit /etc/default/saned
set from no to yes but I get the same error when trying to boot.
I openned gedit manually and these errors were prompted:
package:libcurl3-gnutls:amd64 7.35.0-1ubuntu2.2
package:accountsservice 0.6.35-Oubuntu7.1
package:language-selector-common 0.129.3
I don't know if these even relate to the original error but will appreciate the
help!

[Bug 792865] [NEW] Cookie options are grey

2011-06-04 Thread art
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The option of how long to keep cookies (until close, ask me) is greyed
out. I can still select whether to keep cookies, but not how long to
keep them.

An additional problem is the zoom of a web page. This morning I could
zoom in on a site and it would be remembered from page to page - now I
have to zoom in on each page.

Strange, no?

I was informed information was transmitted as a problem report, but it
does not seem to be attached to this.

[Bug 305063] Problem solved

2008-12-05 Thread Indian Art

 Hi,
I just did a search on google for "bug 260492 ubuntu" and found the solution at
" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/260492 "

Essentially, all I did was access Nautilus by clicking on the trash icon.
Then clicked on one of the files
Then I right clicked on one of Files
I clicked on Properties
I then clicked 'Open with'
& changed it to 'open folder'

Thank you for giving me the name of the bug without which I would not
have corrected this.

Once again, I salute your spirit in serving Ubuntu.
We should use this model of 'open source' for Education, Health, Green Earth,
Fighting Malnutrition...

God bless!

Regards,
Lijo

Sorry. I should have reported that I solved the problem with the help
of the developer, Ingo Klocker. Turned out that the expiration
feature was triggering a crash in a folder which had a corrupted
index.

I turned off all expirations. Then I went into each of the folders
and re-enabled it. When I reached the folder with the corrupted
index. the program crashed with the same error.

Deleting the index for that folder solved the problem.

Thank you for taking my problem seriously. Do you want me to post the
foregoing at the launchpad.net site for the original bug?

I find Microsoft's non-standard implementation of IMAP on an Exchange 2003
server to be abysmal Your mileage may vary.

I'm not sure why accessing your exchange account via OWA would mess up your
blackberry delivery. That would mean webmail exchange access (OWA) would
also screw it up. If this is true, you have either a bug in your blackberry
or a misconfigured blackberry (BES) server.

If that happens only intermittently, and with a few messages, it may be part
of a different bug. The messages are still on the server. If you access
them via a web interface, move them to another folder and then back, they
will reappear in your inbox.

I don't know the bug number for that one.

Re: [Bug 386607] Re: Screen freezes for no reason

2009-06-21 Thread Indian Art

 Hi,

My Computer has been recently freezing (crashing) again.

I'm not sure if its the New Linux Kernel or the fact I am sometimes
using it in Hot environs. (The ACPI tempreture had gone up to 89* C
because of some intensive use few days ago.

However, its not rock-solid stable like 8.10.
Hope some updates do the trick. Good luck

Regards,
Indian Art

The update manager informed me of an update for Compiz & removing the
blacklist of Intel or something. After I installed this update the
laptop does not crash (freeze). I am keeping my fingers crossed that
this stability lasts. I am closing this bug. If the screen starts to
freeze again I will report it in another Bug. Thanks everyone.

[Bug 384426] Re: The OS crashes frequenty and randomly

2009-06-07 Thread Indian Art
"I think you might have used the wrong template. That seems like a error
reporting template specific to a single package." Please could you
explain some more. I'm sorry I'm a non-technical person and do not
understand.

I use Openoffice Writer, Epiphany Gnome Web Browser 2.26.1 and Computer
(Nautilus 2.26.2) to access files when it crashes. This often happens but not
always, when I listen to music on Imeem on Epiphany.
Sometimes it crashes when I just maxime or minimize any window. This never
happened when I used Ubuntu 8.10, even when several different programs ran
concurrently. Unfortunately it crashes randomly. So I do not know what causes
it to crash.

The System Monitor states I am using Kernel Linux 2.6.28-11-generic,
Gnome 2.26.1 Release 9.04 Jaunty.

I had upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 via Update Manager. Could this
tell us whether it is the standard Ubuntu kernel or are a modified
kernel?

As I am not a technical person I do not think I have the skill to manage
to try starting Ubuntu in a non-graphical mode to see if it happens. I
dont know any code & am all thumbs without a GUI.

I am wondering if the 'Computer Janitor' did this as I think this
started after I used it soon after I upgraded.

[Bug 136469] Re: toshiba p100 series dsdt acpi error no sound, works with acpi turned off.

2009-05-15 Thread Art Cancro
Happy to report that the headphone jack now works just fine on my Toshi.
Was fixed in Intrepid and remains working in Jaunty. It should be noted
that those of you who were experiencing the problem weren't actually
getting "no sound" from the jack, but instead the output was set to
digital (spdif) when it should have been analog. Weird, huh? It's kind
of cool that Toshi gives you a jack that can output in either format but
I don't think there's a proper way to control it from Linux. In any
case my headphones are working fine now. In fact, I'm using both the
audio in and out with Rakarrack to use my Toshi as an effects board for
my electric guitar. Rock on with Ubuntu!

I find Harald's response troubling and totally agree with Myriam. I
don't use the help system much any more, but new users and what she
describes as "basic" users, need a working help system.

With all of the "horrible junk" already a part of the default kubuntu
