[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy
Thanks Tom! You're a genius. I can confirm that this fixes the font issues. It also fixes issues with blocky fonts I had in printed output which I also had in Gutsy. That's a huge help. I found deleting the libQt files in the mathematica distribution and linking to the libQt files (.so.4) in /usr/lib also works. If I didn't replace them, the printing box came up with Qt widgets rather than Gnome widgets. It also defaulted to printing to file rather than to Cups. [Bug 214683] Re: [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad
I have the same problem as jeromek in an upgrade from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04, x86_64 with nvidia card. My font path was the same as jeromek and I don't think it changed from 7.10 to 8.04. I can also confirm Bartek on a 32bit laptop in similar upgrade. My experience with Wolfram support is that they don't have the resources to help debug distribution related bugs. I have nothing to add. Mathematica can find the ttf fonts. Maybe the switch to Xorg 1.4 from 1.3 did it and some broken interaction with Mathematica's private java jre. -- [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214683 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 214683] Re: [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad
I see some very minor improvements by adding ~/.fonts.conf (attached). You may also want to look through your /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* and 53 -monospace-lcd-filter.conf. There seem to be a lot of reports of bugs with fonts in Hardy. This doesn't antialias the blue Input unfortunately. There are a number of other remaining problems (just browse the Documentation for a sampling of fonts). My guess now is that this is an Ubuntu, not Mathematica bug, so hopefully we can fix it as other font issues are resolved. ** Attachment added: ".fonts.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13958876/.fonts.conf -- [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214683 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy
I don't get the X Error messages on Hardy in upgrade from Gutsy on an amd64. I do get them on a 32-bit laptop in the same upgrade, but I also got them when on Gutsy and had to use -defaultvisual. On the 32-bit machine, I have the disappearing text problem described here which I was able to fix by modifying /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* to the correct ones for my machine. Maybe the disappearing font issue is not a Mathematica problem, at least not entirely. But on both machines, I can confirm the error that the Courier (?) Input font is not antialiased properly even with changes to /etc/fonts. But I noticed that it also not aliased on firefox when browsing through the Mathematica online documentation. Can anyone else confirm this? They seem to be both screwed up in the same way. I don't remember it being screwed up on Gutsy with both Firefox 2 or 3b4. [Bug 197163] Re: Mathematica renders fonts incorrectly in Hardy
I meant if you browse around the documentation in Firefox, the In[] and Out[] elements are pixelized in Firefox similarly to the Mathematica notebooks for me, for example, in: http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/List.html Other fonts are hinted, others are antialiased properly. I thought maybe the problems were related. There is some issue in Hardy which I don't understand with the defaults in /etc/fonts/conf.d overriding user set defaults (as through System->Preferences->Appearance). So for me, the defaults were wrong and were messing up gnome-terminal as well. When I changed these as well as adding an ~/.fonts.conf, the disappearing fonts were fixed. For example, try deleting /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-* and create ~/.fonts.conf with your hinting, antialiasing and subpixel rendering settings and see if that helps (and restart X). Hi, I'mactually having similar problem - trying to mound snow leopard hybrid iso and receiving same error. I'm sure I'm supplying a proper offset (http://www.64lines.com/mounting-hfs-plus). Thank you so much - the linux on this machine is at last usable for daily tasks. Some models (or maybe depending on BIOS version) of Sony VAIO with ALC260 give no proper pin configurations as default, resulting in the non-working speaker, etc. Just provide the whole pin configurations via a fixup." Is there a way of getting the right channel working as well ? (this laptop used to have WinXP and the normal headphone socket at the side working with full Stereo sound). If there is a possibility of getting full stereo - what is the next thing I should try? [Bug 1465072] [NEW] failed to Install
Public bug reported: USB boot drive seems to have problems. I tried burning iso image with both Ubuntu and WinX applications. Both failed in different ways. I suspect the usb stick is corrupt, but I don't know why the formatting function doesn't fix that. I may purchase another usb stick, but it's too late to save Ubuntu 15.4. Thankfully, I can still boot into WinX - even that didn't work at first. I was trying to reinstall 15.4 because of the persistent BSODs (black screens of death). I suspect I have made the matter worse, but I couldn't find any useful guidance. I was better off in the 'ol Win95 days - Win98 was a great upgrade. Alas, the world has passed me by. Re: [Bug 1465072] Re: failed to Install
Thanks for the response. I think there were a series of problems in this multi-day effort. The iso images (I tried 14.4 and 15.4) I got from the Ubuntu d/l site were corrupt - during the lenghty d/l process. I didn't check the file size or I may have know that immediately - I have no clue how to verify the MD5 checksum, just another stupid amateur. After using one corrupted image I lost Ubuntu altogether. No prob, I still had WinXP. Since I was now using a different usb 'burner' I suspect the second problem was not being able to create a "bootable" memory stick. I think some programs merely copy the files and don't make the stick bootable. I purchased a new stick (faster, yay) in all this experimentation. That didn't help at all. I eventually got the original stick to boot and installed both 15.4 (1.19 kernel) and 14.4 (LTS, 3.16 kernel) installed. Both produce the same result - black screen of death (or desktop lock-up but with mouse movement). Since I switched to Ubuntu from Lubuntu I can't find Synaptic before the lock-up occurs. Where did the damn menus go? I wanted to find Synaptic to try to install kernel 3.5. That the one where everything seems to work just fine. The bottom line? Since my 'puter is almost 10 years old I think I'll shop for another one. I think a decent refurb can be had for $250. It will come with Windows installed. At 62 years old I really don't want to play with an unstable Linux any more. Besides, I understand Win 10 will be a free upgrade. Perhaps Microsoft will be making the best OS again. Thanks again for the suggestions. From: Phillip Susi To: art_erick...@yahoo.com Sent: Monday, June 15, 2015 10:01 AM Subject: [Bug 1465072] Re: failed to Install Your installation medium is corrupt. I should have reported that I solved the problem with the help of the developer, Ingo Klocker. Turned out that the expiration feature was triggering a crash in a folder which had a corrupted index. [Bug 384426] Re: The OS crashes frequenty and randomly
"I think you might have used the wrong template. That seems like a error reporting template specific to a single package." Please could you explain some more. I'm sorry I'm a non-technical person and do not understand. I use Openoffice Writer, Epiphany Gnome Web Browser 2.26.1 and Computer (Nautilus 2.26.2) to access files when it crashes. This often happens but not always, when I listen to music on Imeem on Epiphany. Sometimes it crashes when I just maxime or minimize any window. This never happened when I used Ubuntu 8.10, even when several different programs ran concurrently. Unfortunately it crashes randomly. So I do not know what causes it to crash. The System Monitor states I am using Kernel Linux 2.6.28-11-generic, Gnome 2.26.1 Release 9.04 Jaunty. I had upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 via Update Manager. Could this tell us whether it is the standard Ubuntu kernel or are a modified kernel? As I am not a technical person I do not think I have the skill to manage to try starting Ubuntu in a non-graphical mode to see if it happens. I dont know any code & am all thumbs without a GUI. I am wondering if the 'Computer Janitor' did this as I think this started after I used it soon after I upgraded. -- The OS crashes frequenty and randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/384426 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Happy to report that the headphone jack now works just fine on my Toshi. Was fixed in Intrepid and remains working in Jaunty. It should be noted that those of you who were experiencing the problem weren't actually getting "no sound" from the jack, but instead the output was set to digital (spdif) when it should have been analog. Weird, huh? It's kind of cool that Toshi gives you a jack that can output in either format but I don't think there's a proper way to control it from Linux. In any case my headphones are working fine now. In fact, I'm using both the audio in and out with Rakarrack to use my Toshi as an effects board for my electric guitar. [Bug 19767] Re: Kde help search fails too quietly if htdig is not installed
I find Harald's response troubling and totally agree with Myriam. I don't use the help system much any more, but new users and what she describes as "basic" users, need a working help system. With all of the "horrible junk" already a part of the default kubuntu install, a working help system seems worth it. -- Kde help search fails too quietly if htdig is not installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/19767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
