[Bug 360415] Re: blender GUI 3d view, icons and material preview distorted
Hi everyone, I had exactly the same problem as Prunus Dulcis posted a screenshot of in the second post. I am quite the beginner when it comes to programming, so I didn't even try any of your fixes, and decided to wait until someone came up with some step-by-step solution I could manage. On a completely different note, I followed the guide on http://theindexer.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/to-do-list-after-installing-ubuntu-904-aka-jaunty-jackalope/";>this website just to get some good software. As it turned out, after completing the first step (changing the sources list and updating), blender worked perfectly! I don't know exactly what fixed the problem, but something in all those packages did.. Hope this helps. UPDATE: This is just weird: I tried blender in another workspace, turns out, the bug is back! I tried the already open blender in another workspace, works perfect! I have a functioning and non-functioning blender at the same time! I closed down the working blender, and blender has not worked since. WTF?? All i did in the meantime was writing the post above. [Bug 224430] Re: [Kubuntu 8.04] KDE Panel disappears for ever after crash
in UBUNTU 8.04 the Gnome Panel disappeared in my case as well. Since I was 'lost' I actually reinstalled and then the same thing happened again. Now, I am virtually certain that the problem was created by an UPGRADE! I (of course) allowed the suggested upgrade (some 40 items) and that seemed to BREAK the system. I am so annoyed, is Ubuntu Linux now going down the Windows route!??? I managed to bring the panels back: The commands I used were: > kill gnome-panel > sudo apt-get install gnome-panel > gnome-panel ...the panels then restarted and reported three conflicts (little panels popped up) with other software (appletts, see below) (presumably the stuff from the upgrade). In every case I chose the option to remove the offending bit of saftware (joke for German readers) whenever I was prompted by these information panels. Hope this helps (not convinced other stuff is not broken...), Ole Conclusion, I would not upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 yet! === Here is a copy/paste from my terminal: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ killall gnome-panel gnome-panel: no process killed [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-panel The program 'gnome-panel' is currently not installed. I later noticed lots of other things were broken. The background was black and remained unresponsive (could not click on it to change properties say). I did not fix this... [Bug 1774994] Re: Laptop wakes up immediately after suspend or hibernation
Might be connected to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1776266 Might a hardware issue. [Bug 1776266] Re: Touchpad and keyboard of MacBook unresponsive
Yeah, it's permanent now. Maybe it's connected to the USB mode. I can imagine that in grub it would be a low protocol version (USB 1.0 or 2.0) and that it's set to USB 3.0 during the boot. At least in normal cables there would be more lines for USB 3.0 than for the lower variants, so maybe the internal connection is faulty on one of these "extra" lines. Rough speculation though. The frustrating thing is that it works in MacOS. Self diagnostics does not find a thing. So I can't bring it to a Mac shop and have it fixed. Once I'll find the right screw drivers I'll try to open it an check the ribbon cables. I would not mind to force keyboard and touchpad to stay in low USB modes if that would fix it. No idea how to achieve that, though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776266 Title: Touchpad and keyboard of MacBook unresponsive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1776266/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1776266] [NEW] Touchpad and keyboard of MacBook unresponsive
Public bug reported: The touchpad and keyboard of my Macbook are unresponsive in Ubuntu 18.04. External USB devices are fine. At first it happened sporadically at boot or kicking in during operation, now it's a somewhat permanent state. [Bug 27441] Re: Thrashing hell
Problem remains. It's a general Linux problem. Here's another annoyed guy who dubs it "the Achilles heel" of Linux, comparing it to (of all things) Windows 98: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-kernel-70/swap-thrashing- can-nothing-be-done-612945/ If you can fix this, I think it's worthy of a Slashdot story. The OOM killer did call for a lot of news stories back in the days. It's not easy to fix, but I think with complete control over the OS as is the case with Ubuntu, it's possible. Also I guess it's a security problem on servers. You don't need root access to a machine, you just need shell access and a memory eating process, and you're ready to take down the machine. :) So just to reiterate: a faulty process can allocate enough memory to push Linux into thrashing, constant paging out to the disk. This behaviour can continue for more than 30 minutes without any progress. Meanwhile the machine is unusable, doesn't respond to input of any kind. So the objective is to put in default safety guards to prevent this from ever happening by denying the faulty process more memory or terminating it, e.g. after having detected that the past say x seconds were spent thrashing. -- Prevent extended periods of thrashing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27441 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
@ Arjen You do not need to fiddle with the source code, as Martin is trying to tell you, that is for the developers. This is what you need to do: Go to this location to find the compited patch just ready to install: https://launchpad.net/~andrew-aylett/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/608672 /+listing-archive-extra Select the right one for your computer under the heading "Package Files". For my HP 2133, I of course chose: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome_0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu2~ppa3_i386.deb (181.7 KiB) The download program asked if I wanted the patch installed to which I answered yes. After installation you need to reboot for the patch to take effect. That should hopefully work, it certainly did on my HP2133. [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
@ Arjen I must confess I don't understand why you keep having problems if you have carefully followed the instructions further up. The problem seems to be that the hardware drivers for the monitor and the wireless networking, somehow interfere with one another and also that the wireless driver doesn't work when first installed. Therefore what has to be done is: 1. Install and activate proprietary STA wireless driver, then reboot. 2. Apply the patch to the chrome screen driver, then reboot. If this doesn't work then I don't know what to suggest, as this has worked for the rest of us. If somebody else can come up with some suggestions for you to try, then that would be good. If you switch from the chrome screen driver to the vesa then you should also be able to get it to work. Alternatively, simply change your screen saver and power setting to not blank the screen, that should also keep it from disconnecting the wireless network. AS it also is a possibility that there is something in the instructions above which you don't quite understand and therefore they don't get carried out correctly. If you have a friend who has experience with Linux who is willing to help you, then it is possible tthat he understand the instructions and can carry them out. Hmmm! Good luck with it, Ole -- [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331952 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
Hi Martin, Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I, who am not a systems programmer, gets a bit confused when I display a log file like /var/log/Xorg.0.log! What exactly do I look for when trying to determine which verson of openchrome I have installed? The situation is, of course, that when I installed Ubuntu 9.04 I installed the current openchrome video driver, whichever one that is. It worked except there was a problem which someone the published a patch for. As you indicate, a patch is not a new driver incl. driver version number, but merely a few instructions in the existing installed driver which get changed. That also introduces some real risks in that, the changed driver may fix one problem but it could potentially create new problems which nobody have yet discovered. But I (and others) trusted the programmer and applied the patch and it did work. Great so far, but what happens when we get the next version of Linux? We non-tech guys haven't got a clue whether the driver we patched is part of the new Linux version. If it is and has not been fixed, then we are back to the same situation again. Therefore you make a good suggestion, that we report a bug to the kernel team! BUT we don't even know whether the driver is part of the kernel or how to find out and, if it is, how to address the bug to the kernel team! So, I have got down on my knees now and I beg you to help us find the answers to those questions and help us to report it to the kernel team if that is what should be done. Thank you in advance for your help, and thank you for your help so far. [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
Michael, I'm another user who has this problem. My hardware: HP 2133 When I first installed 8.04 I could NEVER get wifi to work. After I upgraded to 8.10, wifi was now working PROVIDED I installed the recommended proprietary driver: Broadcom STA Wireless Driver. Then I upgraded to 9.04 by doing a FRESH INSTALL with the recommended Broadcom STA driver, stock standard 9.04 installation, but now wireless crashes randomly as described by all the above. Wireless was working fine on 8.10 now under 9.04 it doesn't work properly. It seems to me, as some have reported above, that it disconnects when I leave the machine. Even if I leave Evolution email running which connects to the mail server on the Net once every minute, wifi still disconnects. When I am at the machine and doing things like browsing the net, it seems to stay up most, if not all, of the time. I think this is of GRAVE CONCERN. This bug report was raised as early as 2009-02-20 by Ben McCann, and now we have May 4 and the problem still exists. I have noticed there are literally 100s of bug reports with a similar theme for all kinds of hardware, not just the HP 2133. This leads me to conclude there is a MAJOR PROBLEM with wifi under 9.04!!! How can we get the developers to give this a high priority? The ideal solution would be that the problem gets found very quickly and fixed and updated software (whether kernel or something else) is made available via synaptic or apt-get, etc. Those of us who have been using Ubuntu for some time and like it will probably do what you wrote: "should I just give up and learn to live with it?". BUT what about new users, people who switch to Ubuntu from MS or just try it out? If they keep having this problem, then they will NOT be impressed and probably not stay with Ubuntu, but rather speak negatively about it. [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
G'day Jerry, I just saw your post and thought I would share the latest development for me because it looks like my connection is staying up. (I will reserve my final judgment till tomorrow after I have slept all night and the connection hopefully has stayed up.) I noticed that Ben McCann in one of his posts above was speculating that the graphics "chrome" driver seemed to make the connection go down in certain situations (why the video driver should interfere with the wireless driver is beyond my understanding.). He then suggested to use another graphics driver "vesa" which he seems to think is inferior to the "chrome" driver but that the connections stays up. So, I decided to try it. This is what I have now: 1. Ubuntu 9.04 2. Broadcom STA Wireless Driver (I think this may be important). 3. "vesa" video driver by modifying the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (a bit tricky if you don't know how, be sure to take a backup before you mess with it.) For now it seems to stay up and I have no complaints about the "vesa" driver's graphics. If you don't know how to do these things, then perhaps I could talk you through it on the phone, but not now, I need to go to bed. If you like, we can try it tomorrow. Ubuntu is a fabulous operating system and I don't want to switch to something else just because of this problem, but I do wish the clever systems programmers could fix the problem and issue updated software we could install and everything works thereafter. [Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
Not your fault, Andrew. It should be a straigh-forward matter to file a bug report in Launchpad to SOMEBODY not NOBODY. I see something lacking here in Launchpad bug tracking system. SOMEBODY in the Ubuntu team, please, please take responsibility for this! You wrote earlier: "Regarding why we didn't get an official release, I'd imagine it's because the Openchrome driver is needed by more than just the HP2133; while the patch might fix things for us, we've no way to tell that it doesn't break things horribly for everyone else. I'd think it would be more likely to be released to Jaunty once the patch has been accepted in some form by the Openchrome devs -- as far as I can see, none of the upstream devs have commented on it." I appreciate what you are saying, however, let us take a little look at the simple FACTS: 1. This bug was first reported by Ben McCann as early as 2009-02-20! - Not a recent bug. 2. This problem did NOT exist in Ubuntu 8.10. - Therefore very frustrating to experience when you install the latest version of Ubuntu. 3. Searching the Ubuntu Forum for help or a solution I discovered that many people are reporting identical or similar problems which didn't exist in U8.10 on all sorts of hardware, not just the HP2133 we own. - Should be of serious concern to the developers! 4. Ubuntu is aspiring to be a mainstream operating system, appealing to the average user in the street. However, the average user cannot be expected to handle problems like this, he would likely leave Ubuntu behind and return to his previous OS. I think I speak for most, if not all, of us in this forum when I say that we want Ubuntu to become THE premier OS! Therefore, issues, like the one at hand, need to be dealt with promptly and professionally otherwise I fear that Ubuntu cannot switch from the perception of being a "nerdy" OS to a mainstream OS. Just my 2 bits worth. Again, thank you for your assistance, Andrew, very much appreciated. [Bug 371191] Re: Corrupted file system ext3 after Jaunty 64 upgrade
I have observed the same problem with my Lenovo T61 laptop. After the upgrade it started to loose files and behave strange (I guess the strange behavior is a result of corrupted files.) After the failed upgrade, I tried reinstall 9.04, this time using ext4. But soon after, it started corrupting files and even the boot loader. I have scanned memory for errors and changed the hard disk to a brand new one. The IT- support department has installed Windows on it to run their usual set of diagnostic tools without finding any problems. After I got it back from IT support I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version and tried to reinstall 9.04. Same problem. Now I'm back on 8.10 and for the last 6 hours it seems to be running fine. So I'm quite convinced this is a 9.04 related problem and not hardware. -- Corrupted file system ext3 after Jaunty 64 upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371191 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
Hi all, After reading about all these woes and experiencing it myself, I have done some further experimenting in order to isolate the problem and as a result I have found a very EASY WORKAROUND which in no way impacts on your computer. MY SETUP: Hardware: HP 2133 Mini-note netbook computer Fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 Using internal wireless modem with Broadcom STA driver for wifi access PROBLEM: After booting up and providing relevant information and password I can connect wirelessly. If I leave the PC for a while and return then I find that the wireless connection is down and there is no way I can get it up again except rebooting, very inconvenient. This problem did NOT exist in Ubuntu 8.10. ACTIONS: I searched the Ubuntu Forum and discovered that many, many others reported a similar or identical problem on many differenct hardware platforms. Some had discovered that if they closed their laptop computer which switched off the screen, then they were immediately disconnected from the network and needed to reboot to get back on again. Some therefore were pointing to the openchrome graphics driver (I find it amazing that a graphics driver should somehow interfere with the wireless driver). So, the general consensus was developing that it had to do with the openchrome video driver and suggestions were to fall back to the vesa driver. I tried that and it did indeed prevent the problem form occuring, so further pointed a finger at openchrome. I rebooted with openchrome again and then experimented this way: I opened System/Preferences/Screensaver/Power Management and set it as follows: "Put display to sleep when inactive for" and set it to "2 minutes". I waited 2 minutes, the screen blanked without closing the laptop lid. I woke it up by moving the mouse and tried if I still had a wireless connection up - NO - wireless connection was DOWN. WORKAROUND: I rebooted and again opened System/Preferences/Screensaver/Power Management and set it as follows: "Put display to sleep when inactive for" and set it to "never". Now the wifi connection stays UP, it has not gone down even once!!! But when I leave the machine I would like it to blank the screen after, say, 5 minutes. So I simply set the "Screensaver theme" to "Blank screen" after 5 minutes, and the screen blanks but when I move the mouse and check my wireless connection the it is still UP and running!!! Andrew Aylett sent me this link (thanks, Andy): http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/288 If you go there you will see there is a patch made available for the openchrome driver and at least one HP2133 user has tested it and reports that it has fixed the problem. My problem is, I don't know how to apply such a patch and since my computer now stays connected, I am not very keen to experiment with it. What I am hoping is that one of the clever Ubuntu system guys will make the patch available for all of us to download and install the usual way via synaptic or one of the other update managers after rigorous testing. This is the kind of problem I find extremely frustrating and if newbies have this problem, then it might likely turn them off Ubuntu and perhaps Linux in general. This problem was reported by Ben McCann in February and perhaps by others too that early and here we are now in May and the problem has not been fixed. Is that good enough? Well, I have been a applications project manager for about 25 year and I would not have accepted this situation. Anyway, now we know where the problem lies, so please let us have a fix for it. -- [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331952 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 331952] Re: [HP 2133 MiniNote laptop] Unexpected and unrecoverable wireless disconnect with B43 driver
WOW! Thank you so much Andrew for that. I downloaded and installed your patch, rebooted and tested the patch by both closing the lid (and thereby blanking the screen) and opening it again and I was still online. Then I set my screensaver to blank the screen after a certain time, I waited till that happened, woke up the computer and bingo I was still online. Thank you for your work, Andrew, I don't understand why the Ubuntu team hadn't done this before release of Ubuntu 9.04 and saved so many of us from grief. For those of you who don't know where to find the patch to download (neither did I so I had to find out first), this is where Andrew's patches are: https://launchpad.net/~andrew-aylett/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/608672 /+listing-archive-extra NOTICE: You must select the right one for your computer. For my HP 2133, I of course chose: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome_0.2.903+svn713-1ubuntu2~ppa3_i386.deb (181.7 KiB) The download program asked if I wanted the patch installed to which I answered yes. I also saved a copy in case I need it again in the future. After installation you need to reboot for the patch to take effect. Cheers from an even happier Ubuntu 9.04 user. [Bug 27441] Re: Thrashing hell
What makes you think the problem would be gone? Does the LiveCD contain a C compiler? Otherwise, if you have access to the new kernel, you could try my instructions above. Let me spell it out. Install GCC with synaptic (or "apt-get install gcc"). Fetch the test program I attached above. Then run the following command from a shell: gcc -Wall memhog.c -o memhog Make sure swap is activated. Then run "./memhog megabytes-to-allocate", e.g. "./memhog 400" to eat up 400 MBs of memory. The program sits tight on the memory for 60 seconds, then quits. You'll need to adjust the amount according to how much memory you have on your system. You can take a look with free -m This will take you maybe 10 minutes. Also why did this bug report end up on the kernel? Ben Collins on the previous bug clearly stated that he didn't thought it was a kernel problem. No matter what it's probably first and foremost a question of providing sensible configuration defaults. -- Thrashing hell https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27441 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 121696] Really annoying cut-n-paste bug
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: glade-3 There's a really annoying cut-n-paste bug in Glade 3.2.0. Basically, it wipes the names of the widgets. So it's really cumbersome to refactor a window because you have to type in all the widget names from scratch each time you move something around. The bug has already been fixed upstream in Glade 3.2.1: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=432519 http://glade.gnome.org/ Would it be possible to get the bugfix release into Feisty Fawn? Glade is practically unusable without it, I've had to find the old Glade 3.0 package from Hoary. Which was a PITA because it has dependencies, not to mention that the update manager is going crazy over the old package each time there's an (unrelated) update to Feisty. ** Affects: glade-3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Really annoying cut-n-paste bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121696 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I haven't gotten used to it yet, one click + mouse aim (which is harder because full UI is not the first) + click is just so incredibly irritating. Seems this bug is preventing it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/573125 The only alternative I can think of is not to hide it, instead stick it on an extra virtual desktop and always use the desktop switcher to get to it. -- Rhythmbox cannot be quickly opened from Indicator Applet https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539426 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 549723] Re: empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup
I don't know if this is the problem the OP is facing, for me I went to the settings for startup applications in the GNOME control panel and checked the Empathy entry. Then I reboot. When the desktop comes up again, empathy is started up, but the status is offline. I have to manually select the online status, then it connects. The "Automatically connect at startup" is checked in the Empathy settings. For me the problem appears to be that the command in the startup settings is "empathy --no-connect". I have no idea where this came from, in fact I got "Exec=empathy" in /etc/xdg/autostart/empathy.desktop. I'm going to change it to "empathy --start-hidden" and see if that helps. :) -- empathy doesn't autoconnect at startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/549723 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 371191] Re: Corrupted file system ext3 after Jaunty 64 upgrade
The worst problems was solved for me when I switched to AHCI. However, the system never became stable. The wireless link often died, and I had to reconnect. Also there was lots of crashes, but no corruption of the file system. Some time it crashed just out of the blue, while other times it went for a longer death spiral. Some processes refused to die, file system was suddenly mounted in read-only mode, etc... and then you know if was going to die quite soon. I got the feeling that it most often died related to suspending, configuring network, and when adding/removing another screen (have a 'nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M (rev a1)' card). A few days ago I got so fed up with it that I decided to switch to 9.10 (development branch). So far it has been running flawless. I guess it's still to early to say that all problems will be fixed with the next release, but it really looks promising. So if you are having lots of problems you might want to give the next version a try. It looks far better as far as I can tell.
