in UBUNTU 8.04 the Gnome Panel disappeared in my case as well. Since I was 'lost' I actually reinstalled and then the same thing happened again. Now, I am virtually certain that the problem was created by an UPGRADE! I (of course) allowed the suggested upgrade (some 40 items) and that seemed to BREAK the system. I am so annoyed, is Ubuntu Linux now going down the Windows route!???
I managed to bring the panels back: The commands I used were: > kill gnome-panel > sudo apt-get install gnome-panel > gnome-panel ...the panels then restarted and reported three conflicts (little panels popped up) with other software (appletts, see below) (presumably the stuff from the upgrade). In every case I chose the option to remove the offending bit of saftware (joke for German readers) whenever I was prompted by these information panels. Hope this helps (not convinced other stuff is not broken...), Ole Conclusion, I would not upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 yet! =========================================== Here is a copy/paste from my terminal: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ killall gnome-panel gnome-panel: no process killed [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-panel The program 'gnome-panel' is currently not installed.
