Are you joking? 4.5M? That is nothing? Should I undo the doc-package

You are wrong.

texlive-doc-base is NOT the splitted off doc files from texlive-base.

Look: there is
texlive-latex-extra->texlive-latex-extra-doc
texlive-graphics   ->texlive-graphics-doc
and there is
texllive-base
but NO texlive-base-doc!

texlive-base-doc is NOT equal to texlive-doc-base.

We be decision did NOT split off the documentation files of texlive-base
into a separate package, out of a very simple reason, the size of the
docfiles are just so small that it is irrelevant.

Compare the sizes of the other *-doc (not *-doc-*!!) packages with the
size of the doc files in texlive-base.

So what is there is by decision.

If you have no better reasoning to support splitting doc files of
telxive-base off then "left in a non-documentation package" then it will
not happen. Simply because there is NO "non-documentation package",
there are just packages, some contain the documentation, some are split
off. ANd the selection which have been split off was based on a
reasonable percentage between normal files and docfiles.

Enough time spent explaining things that are easy to be found by
searching (eg that texlive-doc-base is built from texlive-doc source,
so it cannot contain the docfiles from texlive-base which is built from
texlive-base!), back to real work.

So what do you want to achieve??? If you want to add a new hyphenation
pattern it would be the correct way to read
TeX on Debian
document which is shipped (at least in Debian) in the tex-common package
which explains HOW to correctly add a new hyphenation pattern.

In quick: You have to add a file to /etc/texmf/language.d/, call
update-language
and then
fmtutil-sys --byfmt latex
or similar.

Is this still true? Does babel expect british or UKenglish?

That would effect TL2008, too!!

Till now the license situation is not clear enough that the TeX Gyre
fonts will easily be accepted into Debian.

That will be a bit of a pain, but either the licensing is fixed, or we
have to convince Debian ftp-master, or the fonts will go into non-free

That is a core babel file and we will not replace core babel files with
something else. The respective upstream authors have to work together to
get this fixed. Before the magyar.ldf 1.5 from the above location has
not been merged into babel we will not ship it per default as

You seem to have deleted all the files in /etc/texmf. dpkg rejects to
install removed conffiles, that is policy and good so. If you did this
on purpose (the removal) that should not be changed.

To fix that, install tex-common package via dpkg --force-confmiss

Isn't that Ubuntu bug #157709???

PLease check the changelog for the Debian packages (the above bug report

   * fix latin.ldf with the version from CTAN (Closes: #451295)

Hmm, aren't they? Our texmf.cnf contains:
TEXMF =
{$TEXMFCONFIG,$TEXMFVAR,$TEXMFHOME,$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFDIST}

Well, that is life. Not all dependencies can be fixed with such a huge
amount of style files.

Please install texlive-latex-extra and be happy.

That is too late, TL2008 has been release already. It would have been
necessary to report that to upstream (which in part is also me, but I

Bug is invalid, this discussion has been done several times.

That we DID split the -doc packages off was already a concession that
is hard on the border line. Most LaTeX/Font package authors require
us to distribute the documentation with the package.

After the change tht recommends are installed by default with agreed
with some authors and internally that we provide -oc packages and
recommend them.

So, no, they will NOT be downgraded to suggests.

YOu can use --without-recommends or put that into apt configuration.

Please someone close this bug.

fancyheadings was latex209, it can be found on
CTAN/obsolete/macros/latex209/contrib/fancyheadings.tar.gz
(note the obsolte AND latex209).

If you want to do this, a simple google whould have shown you that
fancyhdr is 99% compatible to fancyheadings.

No need for hoops.

Will not happen. Put it into your TEXMFLOCAL if you need it so
desperately.

Don't forget: TeX is written in stone, LaTeX is, although slowly moving,
a moving target. You cannot expect that all documents from all times
will compile an all latex versions in the future.

Use plain tex for this.

There are two things here you are mentioning:
- default paper size in TeX versus /etc/papersize
- default paper size for geometry

The topic is an old one dating back from Debian tetex bug reports from
tetex 1.0 (bug #49149 from 1999!).

I ask everyone to read in detail the discussion which has taken place in
Debian bug #402994
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=402994).

First of all:
- TeX has NO NOTION of papersize!!! Forget what you heard.
- dvips and pdftex can use some hints put into the dvi file to determine
  which papersize was the expected one
- all this is in no way supported upstream.

Short solution for ALL your problem: SPECIFY THE PAPERSIZE!!!

> \documentclass{article}
> \usepackage{geometry}
> \begin{document}
> This is a \LaTeX\ document.
> \end{document}
>
> Moreover, /etc/papersize is set to A4, and my locale is en_GB. Between
> all of those, it seems like the geometry package should understand that
> I'd like A4 paper!

Well, that is your opinion. You can configure geometry.sty using
geometry.cfg.

But AGAIN I recommend doing something as simple as
\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
You DON'T want to have your document layout changed with every transfer
on a different computer, do you

BTW: If someone, Ubuntu maintainers or someone else, wants to help with
this, in the above mentioned bug report there are already some proposals
how to support a useful mechanism ... help is appreciated, we will not
implement this in any reasonable time frame, first since we don't have
enough man power, second because we (debian-tex-maint developer) think
that you should specify what you want.

Best wishes

Interestingly TeX Live upstream NEVER shipped vlna in any architecture

On the Ubuntu side one user mentioned that the vlna is not present. And
this is true, it is only present for arch=win32.

Is there a reason for this? I cannot understand the documentation at

(see below).

Any comments?

This is done preliminary in texlive-bin -11 and definitely in -13

But Ubuntu maintainers should check, it could be that it doesn't work

On Debian tetex-base is gone, or better a transitional package, there is
only texlive now.

This is to be expected. texlive packages were made to work with each
other, and to cooperate with the tetex packages, but it cannot be
guaranteed that every single sty file in there works with the respective
tetex packages. Upgrading tetex to the transitional packages will pull
in texlive, which is newer anyway.

This looks suspiciously like either a dpkg bug, a hard disk error, or
something else. But definitely nothing related to the texlive packages:

That is not texlive problem.

What is your

We had similar problems because HOME had a terminal /, which made
TEXMFHOME=/path/to/home//texmf

It is important that HOME does not have a terminal slash.

Next release (TeX Live 2008) will have a fix for that

True. But it might be that the generated TeX code is just wrong and this
a problem of lyx and not pdflatex.

Can you do the following:
- in your home directory
mv .lyx .lyx.save
- then retry with a pristine lyx call

After this you might
rm -rf .lyx
mv .lyx.save .lyx

Also, can you generate TeX code:
File -> Export -> LaTeX (pdflatex)
and attach the file. Thanks.

Wrong. Please get to know what we are talking about with TeX languages
before submitting a bug.

First, you probably did upgrade from a tetex-bin/-extra system to
texlive, so all the hyphenation patterns actually present in
tetex-bin/-extra are covered by these lang packages.

Second, locales are about *MESSAGES* and *INTERFACE* settings of your
*PROGRAMS* not about the languages you are writing in.

Ubuntu devels, please close this bug.

Unfortunately this is currently not possible. See Debian bug report 375922
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=375922
and especially Florent's explanations.

What you *COULD* do is *remove* those packages not needed. They were
probably pulled in by the new tetex-extra transitional package. If you
remove tetex-* and install only those languages/hyphenation patterns you
need it will be better.

scrollkeeper calls update *documentation*, while mktexlsr/updmap-sys/etc

The following "slight" problem has stopped us from till now from
including these fonts in the packages, namely that the fonts are
licensed under the GUST Font License, while the original fonts (URW++
ones) are licensed under GPLv2.

Now, the problem is: (or are)
- who can decide whether this is a derived work or not? If it is it has
  to be licensed under GPLv2
- URW++ will not sue anybody, but this is an assumption, what if?

So my current plan is the following:
- Create separate packages for the tex gyre fonts (already done)
- upload the package to the NEW queue of Debian AND at the same time
  inform the ftp-masters about the situation
- wait for their decision.

I don't and will not decide on this, I am not a lawyer. And I guess none
of us is a lawyer to decide whether it is a derived work or independent.

In any case, I am sure that it will NOT do it into gutsy. But the fonts
are not hard to install anyway into TEXMFLOCAL ...

I don't understand why this does not work on ubuntu. THe Debian packages
introduced with texlive-bin 2007-8:
  * rework the xdvi conf file handling code to not "preserve removal"
when upgrading from older texlive versions (Closes: #425272)
which does in the postinst configure part:

xdvi_alternatives () {
  LANG=C update-alternatives --display xdvi.bin  | grep -q "$1"
}

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/xdvi.bin xdvi.bin /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin
30
if update-alternatives --list xdvi.bin | grep -q xdvi.real ; then
  # remove the old tetex alternative, should switch to auto mode
  # automatically even if there are other xdvi alternatives
  # installed
  update-alternatives --remove xdvi.bin /usr/bin/xdvi.real
else
  if xdvi_alternatives "status is manual" ; then
if xdvi_alternatives "link currently points to /usr/bin/xdvi.real" ;
then
  # link status is manual, and we point to the tetex alternative
  # can this happen? It seems so, see #419381 and siblings
  # we switch to auto mode
  update-alternatives --auto xdvi.bin
else
  # xdvi.bin is in manual mode but not pointing to xdvi.real, leave
  # it untouched
  : do nothing
fi
  fi
fi

SO you wrote:
> but the later was suposed to link to /usr/bin/xdvi-xaw.bin, and it
> wasn't.

Where was it linked to?

And the output of
LANG=C update-alternatives --display xdvi.bin
LANG=C update-alternatives --list xdvi.bin
would be nice. The output BEFORE fixing this by hand.

> Seems like a packaging bug to me, simple enough to fix, but I haven't
> checked the package script to confirm.

It is not THAT simple, because we have other xdvi alternatives and we
cannot replace a MANUALLY set link (status manual) in any case with
--auto, this is not how Debian (Ubuntu?) works, one has to respect the
decisions of the system administrator.

Dear All Involved Parties ;)

As the maintainer of platex (the Polish one) I vote for dropping the
Polish platex format file. I'm also open to renaming the directory in
the TeX inputs subtree.

The separate format file is no longer needed. Typesetting in Polish is
perfectly possible with the default Babel-based format (provided Polish
hyphenation patterns are enabled). [The 'Polish' hyphen.cfg was my
reaction to rather strange status of Babel which is not part of the
LaTeX kernel yet it adds some new user-visible commands to the format
file (e.g., \selectlanguage). I used to claim that Babel breaks LaTeX
rules (see cfgguide, p. 5). I still find it at best terribly misleading
that cfgguide points to Babel as a model for customizing hyphenation,
but if one follows that hint one ends up with a hyphen.cfg incompatible
with LaTeX's license.]

As for the directory in the inputs area, the main item there is
polski.sty --- a package for typesetting in Polish. Other files are
mainly of historical importance (support for strange ways of encoding
Polish letters in source files) or will become such soon (support for
the 'PL' family of fonts being phased out by Latin Modern).

So I think it is acceptable to rename the directory after the main
package: polski/.

With best,
Marcin

Not in even remotly related. The only thing that COULD be the error
(sorry, I cannot check, sitting on a Windows Computer) is that the
fmtutil-sys call breaks BEFORE the update-alternatives code is reached,
so it will be never called. But in this case this is still a different

Sorry, but obviously you don't understand these package issues: Can you
explain me in simple words what "sane" means?

If the link points to a file on a NFS mounted share, that is NOT mounted
at package upgrade time, I cannot even check on the existence of the
file. But still this is perfectly sane

So, now it's your turn, explain we what is sane? We are already checking
for those settings we KNOW that are outdated/from tetex, and remove
them. But anything else is OUT OF OUR BUSINESS. That is sysadm business.

I am not saying that we cannot improve the code in the postinst script,
but a simple
update-alternatives --auto ..
is simply NOT the solution. You are invited to contribute more
intelligent code, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, it is a good approach. First, I assume that the update-alternatives
code was not reached due to a failure PRIOR in the postinst script.
Second, if finally a configure was successfull, and the alternative was
pointing to some strange place, we as maintainer cannot do anything.

And HOW can we check this? readlink is nice, but what about a link
pointing to a NFS share that is not already mounted? Or to a not present
file in /usr/local/bin since afterwards some device is mounted over
/usr/local? Or a dangling symlink to /usr/local/bin because files are
stowed/grafted into /usr/local later on.

There is NO way to decide on "sane"/"non-broken" in every case. We can
ONLY care for dangling symlinks which WE have installed, not for
anything else.

It could be that the code already handles this, but the postinst script
was stopped prior to executing the update-alternatives code due to an
error in fmtutil-sys.

As I said, texlive-full is there.

Rubbish. Please close this bug. texlive-common is the common stuff and
will NEVER recommend anything special. Completely on the contrary, all
the packages DEPEND on texlive-common.

Furthermore, there is texlive-full which depends on texlive-pictures.
