Public bug reported: When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on "Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP! please? Apparently this involves firefox-3.5, and something about /var/log/dist- upgrade/. I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to play. [Bug 448792] Re: Kaffeine has no icon after upgrade to karmic
The kaffeine icon looks to be shipped in kde-icons-oxygen instead of the package itself. This package is neither recommended nor depended upon. It also looks like it's the only place where icons for kaffeine are stored within Karmic. Maybe yet another SRU candidate when an update is prepared anyway? It looks like those issues are purely problems that involve being on Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu. (However it feels bad if an application refers to an icon and does not ship it by itself or depend on something that does, even if somebody else could in theory provide it too.) -- Kaffeine has no icon after upgrade to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/448792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

After four or five installation and full apgrades, giving to me the grub shell, I decided to upgrade all the things BUT TO NOT MAKE these two upgrades and if seemed to work, after the reboot was all OK. I tried to fix the version of these two files with synaptic. Then installing other things with a different program manager it installed also these two and it gaves to me the grub shell. So, maybe the fault is on the installation of grub-pc that FAIL to create the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, that I miss. -- Ubuntu 9.10 beta does not boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/443107 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu (via bug 477104). -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Philip. Thanks for you quick reply. Unfortunately I had to uninstall Ubuntu since I needed the computer to work and installed Windows 7. I'll do another installation and try to replicate the bug. This happens in Windows 7 too, but I was able to find a workaround: using the device manager, if I remove "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the device properties I stop having problems. Re: [Bug 478226] Re: Netbook with SSD drops out with Winepulse driver
The apparent latency on the SSD may or may not be related. It may be a kernel stall on something else entirely, a lock in the wireless driver, or pixies in the ether. I don't know at present. What I do know is that the error shows up in the Pulseaudio logs, so that is where I have to start. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm 1) Configure your session to use 2 different keyboard layout with the keyboard layout switcher applet. (in my case it was Belgian and French Dvorak Bépo) 2) Set one of your keyboards to be the default one (in my case Fr Dvorak Bépo) and set the keyboard layout to be generic (not window specific). 3) Observe that, depending the order you entered the layout in the chooser, GDM will always propose you by default one of your keyboard layout to enter your password. Unfortunatly, it's not the default (by default, GDM uses belgian keyboard) => BUG 4) In your session, remove the second keyboard (Belgian) and completely remove the switcher applet. [Bug 478973] [NEW] expiration functionality of FreeRADIUS 2.1.0 is broken
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: freeradius Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 currently use FreeRADIUS 2.1.0. That version of FreeRADIUS has broken "expiration" functionality. The latest version 2.1.7 is not broken. An example is below. I discovered this in Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition using package "freeradius 2.1.0+dfsg-0ubuntu7". Then, on a different computer, I found it also in Ubuntu 9.04 Server Edition. Then, on a third computer, I built 2.1.0 and 2.1.7 from the original upstream sources and found that 2.1.0 has the bug but not 2.1.7. I am trying to setup a production FreeRADIUS server on Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition and I need the "expiration" functionality. I request that the freeradius package be upgraded to a working version. [Bug 475131] Re: Graphics display shuts off intermitantly
I can confirm a similar problem on a similar setup. The only difference is the screen never turns on - it just stays black. Or perhaps I'm too impatient. :) I cannot Ctrl+Alt+1 to switch to a virtual terminal and I must hard reboot. This occurs if I have no xorg.conf or if I have one using the ati or radeon drivers. And this is on the 64 bit Karmic. If I use the 32 bit live cd, however, everything seems to work fine! (Uses built-in xorg configuration, using "ati" and "radeon" drivers.) So it must be a 64 bit issue? I did two clean installs with 9.10 karmic. In one of them, the problem is solved, in the other one, the problem is still present. Since they are both clean installs (no upgrades), it's ver odd. [Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)
Here are my test results with the Huawei E160G: Test 1: Current officially released kernel I have clicked 3 times manually on Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei and nothing helped. The log1a is after about 5 minutes after suddenly (didn't expect it anymore) the connection has been established. Test 2: apw5 Kernel I have clicked 2 times manually on Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei and nothing helped. In the logs log2 is with WLAN additionally enabled, log2a is without. Test 3: apw10 Kernel On the first attempt plugging the mobile internet stick nothing happened (log3). On the second attempt (log3a) it worked. I notice that the drive does not get mounted as in Test 1 (and unfortunately I don't remember how it was on test2). Test 4: Most recent development kernel (2.6.32-020632rc6) log4 is my first attempt. The drive from the stick gets mounted. After clicking manually on the Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei it works. Second attempt fails - I can't get it to work any more even if clicking several times manually to connect. Test 5: Most recent development kernel (2.6.32-020632rc6) - After another reboot I plug in the stick and wait until the message is displayed that GSM is disconnected. I click on 'Drei'. It does not work either (log5). Second attempt without success (log5a). BTW: Drive from the stick gets mounted. Third attempt without success (log5b). BTW: Drive from the stick gets mounted. I try unmount and then reconnect without success. Fourth attempt (log5c) using other USB port - message that disconnected comes quite fast, then drive gets mounted - no success. Fifth attempt (log5d) Sixth attempt (log5e) logged in a separate session before login - anyway did not work with the modem plugged in before login. Test 6: Back on apw10 Kernel It works only the first time I connect the stick! Each further attempt (I did a few times) it does not work any more (log6). What I notice is that in general the animated icon of network manager hangs with the tooltip "Preparing mobile broadband connection 'Drei'" after I plugged in the. ==> However, the apw10 kernel seems the only one I can get a connection at least the first time - did not try more often. I remember that on Jaunty with some older kernel I sometimes had to plugin the stick also a few times until it worked. ==> Anyway, my opinion is that the last released kernel in Jaunty was the one where it worked best for me. ** Attachment added: "Test-Logs" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35405840/Kernel-tests.tar.gz -- Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478450] Re: flash drive mounts ok but the evince document viewer fails to open a document
evince does not open .odt documents, OpenOffice.org does. Simply double-clicking on the file should automatically choose the default program. Closing this bug report as invalid. To format a USB stick or an external disk, use gparted, which is not installed by default.
