2009-11-09 Thread Doris Foster
Public bug reported:

When the upgrade for Ubuntu 9.10 was offered, I thought I was expected
to allow it to run, I am rather new at this stuff. It took all
afternoon last Sunday, a week ago, and since then I have encountered
several unfamiliar problems. The most disturbing is that the Rhythmbox
no longer contains, in the side pane, the option "Unknown" which I was
able to play my inserted CD's by clicking, once I had inserted one in
the computer mechanism for that. At that time, the computer monitor
would also display a small window telling me that it had noticed that I
had inserted a CD and asking if I wished to use Rhythmbox to listen to
it. I would then click "okay" and it would disappear that window and
open Rhythmbox. At first I didn't know what to do, and it took some
trial and error to figure out, but I found that if I clicked on
"Unknown" the computer would oblige my wish to listen to the CD by
listing all of the tracks and that then when I clicked on "Play" it
would oblige me even further by doing so. I was very happy to discover
how to do this, but now there is no item "Unknown" listed, and
therefore, having tried everything I can find to click on, and to no
avail, I am at my wits end, as I cannot listen to my CD's at all. HELP!
please?

Apparently this involves firefox-3.5, and something about /var/log/dist-
upgrade/. I tried to figure out what is wanted for information, but
most of what I've read is beyond my vocabulary, computer-wise, which is
limited still. I am trying, but much is assumed, and it is hard to
figure out where to learn it from. Please try to help me get my CD's to
play.

Please try opening nautilus and navigating to smb://localhost (Control+L to
bring up the location bar) on the machine that's hosting this share and seeing
if the share is listed there. Also, please attach your /etc/samba/smb.conf file
and the output of "net usershare info"

Sometimes it may take some time for shares to appear on a remote computer --
even Windows, where the smb protocol was originally used, can't detect shares
from other computers sometimes.

[Bug 448792] Re: Kaffeine has no icon after upgrade to karmic

2009-11-09 Thread Philipp Kern
The kaffeine icon looks to be shipped in kde-icons-oxygen instead of the
package itself. This package is neither recommended nor depended upon.
It also looks like it's the only place where icons for kaffeine are
stored within Karmic. Maybe yet another SRU candidate when an update is
prepared anyway? It looks like those issues are purely problems that
involve being on Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu. (However it feels bad if an
application refers to an icon and does not ship it by itself or depend
on something that does, even if somebody else could in theory provide it
too.)

[Bug 443107] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 beta does not boot

2009-11-09 Thread mauriceplus
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477104 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477104

Hi Agostino,

I don't know if it should be interesting. I run wubi in a eeepc with
windows 7. I installed Kubuntu 9.10 netbook version. It started at
reboot without problems. Running the upgrade I noticed that there are
the grub-pc and grub-common updates. After four or five installation and
full apgrades, giving to me the grub shell, I decided to upgrade all the
things BUT TO NOT MAKE these two upgrades and if seemed to work, after
the reboot was all OK. I tried to fix the version of these two files
with synaptic. Then installing other things with a different program
manager it installed also these two and it gaves to me the grub shell.
So, maybe the fault is on the installation of grub-pc that FAIL to
create the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, that I miss.

[Bug 478474] Re: Atheros 5007 stops working after update.

2009-11-09 Thread random
Hi Philip.

Thanks for you quick reply. Unfortunately I had to uninstall Ubuntu
since I needed the computer to work and installed Windows 7. I'll do
another installation and try to replicate the bug.

This happens in Windows 7 too, but I was able to find a workaround:
using the device manager, if I remove "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power" in the device properties I stop having
problems.

Thanks.

[Bug 420424] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 6930p] suspend/resume failure

2009-11-09 Thread snowlord
I can confirm that removing ricoh_mmc solved this issue for me.

As an aside, note that in Jaunty resuming worked for me, but the X server
always crashed when resuming after the laptop had slept for more than a short
while, so it was useless anyway. There's a bug about that somewhere, and as far
as I understood it, it was related to the Intel graphics driver.

[Bug 441638] Re: upstart job keeps restarting a dying gdm

2009-11-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
A latter bug was found in getting the failsafe session up, since dexconf
no longer generates xorg.conf's, it also can't be used to generate the
failsafe mode's xorg.conf. I've uploaded a change which just generates
a standard xorg.conf (this is pretty much all dexconf was doing last
release anyway). So recommend the fix for bug 477149 go in along with
this one.

[Bug 478972] [NEW] FUJITSU SIEMENS LIFEBOOK T5010 suspend/resume failure

2009-11-09 Thread khul
Public bug reported:

I chose "suspend" from the user menu and the screen went dark and dead.
There was no response to keyboard or touchpad, although the screen
backlight seemed to be on and the leds did not indicate suspend state. I
had to power off. (Trying to report this I got a message about a failure
in launchpad, and something about a timeout setting, referring to me as
a beta user. I am not running a beta release. I now try again.)

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly.

Re: [Bug 478226] Re: Netbook with SSD drops out with Winepulse driver

2009-11-09 Thread Neil Wilson
The apparent latency on the SSD may or may not be related. It may be a
kernel stall on something else entirely, a lock in the wireless
driver, or pixies in the ether. I don't know at present. What I do
know is that the error shows up in the Pulseaudio logs, so that is
where I have to start.

I'll give the backport modules a go and report back.

[Bug 478974] [NEW] GDM should use the preferred layout of the user

2009-11-09 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

1) Configure your session to use 2 different keyboard layout with the
keyboard layout switcher applet. (in my case it was Belgian and French
Dvorak Bépo)

2) Set one of your keyboards to be the default one (in my case Fr Dvorak
Bépo) and set the keyboard layout to be generic (not window specific).

3) Observe that, depending the order you entered the layout in the chooser, GDM
will always propose you by default one of your keyboard layout to enter your
password. Unfortunatly, it's not the default (by default, GDM uses belgian
keyboard) => BUG

4) In your session, remove the second keyboard (Belgian) and completely remove
the switcher applet. You know only have one keyboard layout (Fr Dvorak Bépo)

5) GDM still uses the belgian one by default for my session. => BUG

[Bug 478973] [NEW] expiration functionality of FreeRADIUS 2.1.0 is broken

2009-11-09 Thread Derick Eddington
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: freeradius

Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 currently use FreeRADIUS 2.1.0. That version of
FreeRADIUS has broken "expiration" functionality. The latest version
2.1.7 is not broken. An example is below. I discovered this in Ubuntu
9.10 Server Edition using package "freeradius 2.1.0+dfsg-0ubuntu7".
Then, on a different computer, I found it also in Ubuntu 9.04 Server
Edition. Then, on a third computer, I built 2.1.0 and 2.1.7 from the
original upstream sources and found that 2.1.0 has the bug but not
2.1.7. I am trying to setup a production FreeRADIUS server on Ubuntu
9.10 Server Edition and I need the "expiration" functionality. I
request that the freeradius package be upgraded to a working version.

Example:

Add an entry like this to the "users" file:
jane Cleartext-Password := "enaj", Expiration := "4 May 2013"

2.1.0 does not work:

2009-11-09 Thread xamul
Hi, got te same problem setting 'nohdparam' doesn't bring any benefit.

GPU is Radeon, with fglrx hdd seams to freeze more often, without fglrx
no cpu freq and fan is always on.

With the first installation of Ubuntu 9.04 IK didn't se the issue, so if
it was present it hapened very rarely. It got worst after various
updates and with Karmic system is almost unusable.

[Bug 478980] [NEW] cannot remove gnome-panel icons completely

2009-11-09 Thread samrat_mehra
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System: karmic 9.10

I want to remove multi-colored icons from gnome-panel menu bar.
Before 9.10 they could be removed by going to appearance -> interface ->show
icons in menus
and icons from buttons by "gconf -> Desktop -> Interface -> Buttons have icons"

In Ubuntu 9.10 this doesn't work. Though buttons don't have icons by default
but "half" the menu has it like "Application" & "Places" part even when I
uncheck show icons in menus.

live cd, new user all have this problem.

[Bug 478978] [NEW] madplay segfaults on exit in 9.10

2009-11-09 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: madplay

The title sums it up. If it exits naturally, either by reaching the end of the
song or having "q" pressed, it segfaults.
It if it is killed with ctrl-c, it does not segfault.

The main implication of this is that one can no longer play more than one song
per invocation of madplay.
(My favorite use of madplay was to play all songs in a directory with madplay *)

[Bug 478976] [NEW] evolution chooses wrong sender address when replying to mail

2009-11-09 Thread Jonas Olson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Prior to upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10, Evolution was clever about choosing
which sender address to use (in case you had more than one set up) when
you replied to a mail - it chose the one which was the recipient of the
mail you were replying to. After the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, Evolution
seems to have regressed and now always chooses the default sender
address.

[Bug 436340] Re: Installer fails: grub fails on Intel ICH10 raid

2009-11-09 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
I do have the same problem here. I have upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic.
"apt-get install grub2" quits with the following error:

As much I would like to see this error properly fixed, is there an
alternative fix, e.g. by specifying a proper mapping by hand?

[Bug 475131] Re: Graphics display shuts off intermitantly

2009-11-09 Thread Steven Brown
I can confirm a similar problem on a similar setup. The only difference
is the screen never turns on - it just stays black. Or perhaps I'm too
impatient. :) I cannot Ctrl+Alt+1 to switch to a virtual terminal and
I must hard reboot. This occurs if I have no xorg.conf or if I have one
using the ati or radeon drivers. And this is on the 64 bit Karmic.

If I use the 32 bit live cd, however, everything seems to work fine!
(Uses built-in xorg configuration, using "ati" and "radeon" drivers.)
So it must be a 64 bit issue? I'll post some files, from the 32bit
liveCD session and from my 64bit install.

2009-11-09 Thread Martin Pitt
Can you confirm that you are running GNOME? Does this happen with other
USB storage devices (like USB sticks) as well?

devkit-disks looks fine. Can you please do this:

  * Disconnect the garmin
  * Open a Terminal and do "gvfs-mount -oi"
  * Connect the garmin, wait some 10 seconds
  * Press Control-C, and copy&paste the output here.
  * Copy & paste the output of "mount".

Thanks!

[Bug 402018] Re: Please install and use the pulseaudio output plugin by default

2009-11-09 Thread mahen
As of today (Karmic 9.10 AMD64 with backports and pre-relase enabled), I
still have this issue (sound skipps / stutters every few seconds) with
vlc only and no other player.

I tried version 1.0.2-1ubuntu2 as well as version 1.0.3 (ppa),

I tried OSS, alsa, pulseaudio modes. It actually sounds as if the videos
were corrupt. But of course, the videos aren't and it doesn't occur with
any other player (totem, mplayer...).

I have an ICH10 family audio board.
Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

Sound works OK in all other apps (except in audacious 2 : I had to
select alsa instead of pulseaudio, otherwise some plugins were
misbehaving, but this is probably an audacious 2 bug).

What may I do to help fix this issue ?

[Bug 42121] Re: Symlinks for umountnfs / sendsigs wrong: hang on shutdown / reboot

2009-11-09 Thread markba
I did two clean installs with 9.10 karmic. In one of them, the problem
is solved, in the other one, the problem is still present. Since they
are both clean installs (no upgrades), it's ver odd. Maybe it has
something to do with the sequence in which fstab is modified and the
updates are downloaded and installed.

So the bug seems to be solved on some karmic systems, but not on all.

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-09 Thread Martin Wildam
Ah, btw: The apw10 kernel - I did verify that - does not map the drive from the
stick.
So if that gets not mapped it is a pretty good sign that it works (same
behavior was also on Jaunty where it worked fine).

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-09 Thread Martin Wildam
Here are my test results with the Huawei E160G:

Test 1: Current officially released kernel
I have clicked 3 times manually on Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei and
nothing helped.

The log1a is after about 5 minutes after suddenly (didn't expect it
anymore) the connection has been established.

Test 2: apw5 Kernel
I have clicked 2 times manually on Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei and
nothing helped.
In the logs log2 is with WLAN additionally enabled, log2a is without.

Test 3: apw10 Kernel
On the first attempt plugging the mobile internet stick nothing happened (log3).
On the second attempt (log3a) it worked.
I notice that the drive does not get mounted as in Test 1 (and unfortunately I
don't remember how it was on test2).

Test 4: Most recent development kernel (2.6.32-020632rc6)
log4 is my first attempt. The drive from the stick gets mounted. After clicking
manually on the Network Manager->(Mobile Broadband) Drei it works.
Second attempt fails - I can't get it to work any more even if clicking several
times manually to connect.

Test 5: Most recent development kernel (2.6.32-020632rc6) - After another reboot
I plug in the stick and wait until the message is displayed that GSM is
disconnected. I click on 'Drei'.
It does not work either (log5).
Second attempt without success (log5a). BTW: Drive from the stick gets mounted.
Third attempt without success (log5b). BTW: Drive from the stick gets mounted.
I try unmount and then reconnect without success.
Fourth attempt (log5c) using other USB port - message that disconnected comes
quite fast, then drive gets mounted - no success.
Fifth attempt (log5d)
Sixth attempt (log5e) logged in a separate session before login - anyway did
not work with the modem plugged in before login.

Test 6: Back on apw10 Kernel
It works only the first time I connect the stick!
Each further attempt (I did a few times) it does not work any more (log6).

What I notice is that in general the animated icon of network manager
hangs with the tooltip "Preparing mobile broadband connection 'Drei'"
after I plugged in the.

==> However, the apw10 kernel seems the only one I can get a connection at
least the first time - did not try more often. I remember that on Jaunty with
some older kernel I sometimes had to plugin the stick also a few times until it
worked.

==> Anyway, my opinion is that the last released kernel in Jaunty was
the one where it worked best for me.

[Bug 351518] Re: Booting a virtualbox instance redraws the window many times

2009-11-09 Thread era
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

- While booting a client image, Virtualbox appears to basically destroy
- its main window and draw a new one something like half a dozen times.
+ It appears that when a Virtualbox instance changes its video mode, this
+ causes Virtualbox to destroy its window and create a new one.
+
+ If the user has switched to a different workspace in the meantime, the
+ new window will be drawn in the currently active workspace, effectively
+ causing Virtualbox to appear to switch workspaces on its own.
+
+ While booting a client image (e.g. any recent Ubuntu live CD), this
+ happens multiple times in fairly rapid succession.
+
This is annoying a disruptive when you are attempting to get some other
- work done while booting an image.
-
- I frequently click "start" and switch to a different workspace in order
- to do some other work while the image starts, but because of this
- behavior, it will not stay on the workspace where I started it, either.
+ work done while booting an image. I frequently click "start" and switch
+ to a different workspace in order to do some other work while the image
+ starts, but because of this behavior, Virtualbox will not stay on the

+ window, in the worst case stealing password input or other sensitive
+ keystrokes.

[Bug 445852] Re: SSD stall during boot

2009-11-09 Thread Andrew Simpson
Playing with LiveCD (on a USB stick) with an Aspire One with Super
Talent 16Gb SSD:

- Normal LiveCD boot shows the problem in dmesg.

- Booting with 'libata.dma=0' in kernel line fixes the problem (by
disabling DMA) in dmesg.

- Booting with 'libata.ignore_hpa=0' had no affect.

Since the problem looked to be DMA related, I tried slowing down the
transfer with 'libata.force=udma/33'. No affect, though plenty of logs
about UDMA being forced to 33.

The same machine is working fine with Jaunty. Another Aspire One with
the standard (factory) 8 Gb SSD is running Karmic without any problem.
