Somewhere in www.linux.ie there exists a vi(m) tutorial which goes into
greedy/ non-greedy regexps or else there're links to one. I may have a
printout somewhere that might have a URL. I'll post if I find it.

[techtalk] Netscape6 and RealPlayer8

2001-04-05 Thread Subba Rao

Hi,

I have installed Netscape6 and RealPlayer8 on my Linux 2.2.18 system.
The browser is running fine with very few buggy (annoying) behaviour.

The RealPlayer8 opens only when you explicitly enter the URL. I cannot invoke
RealPlayer8 from Netscape6. In the "Edit->Preferences->Application helpers", I
have defined the RealPlayer8 type files. Besides, RealPlayer8 is working only
for audio and not for video. The following are the "Application helpers" that
I have defined.

audio/x-pn-realaudio extensions: ra,rm,ram
audio/X-pn-realaudio-plugin extensions: ra,rm,ram
application/smil extensions: smi

If anyone got Netscape6 and RealPlayer8 to work, please let me know how you
configured these tools.

Thank you in advance.

To the best of my knowledge realplayers can't be started from within
netscape.
I have tried several times over the past 2 years, but the plugin just does
not seem to exist, on the other hand realplayer itself seems to work
better under linux than it does in windows.

About the video, have you tried opening a local file with video or only
streaming, because if your line isn't fast enough it may take a while
before anything shows up on the screen.

Yes, they do. My spousal unit works for a small not-yet-public company
which just fired the other guy who knows Linux. So, SU is told to change
all the passwords by the NT "Doofas for all seasons". DFAS wants all
these passwords to be easily guessable by the guys in the field, so he
makes them (predictible) variations on the site number and the street
address. Either they never plan to fire anyone ever again...ever or
they could just as easily used passwords like "itesayinenay".

DFAS is immune to arguments about it not being secure -- he's more afraid
of having to track a password book than of spending any effort at all
towards providing anything but token security.

With the same configs as you described, i was never able to get Netscape 6
to work with RealPlayer. Netscape 6 is based on an older, not-so-stable
build of Mozilla, though, and with a newer build of Mozilla, RealPlayer
works.

Good luck :)

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Netscape6 is a real beast when it comes
to using CPU and memory resources. The version 4.7x was pretty decent performer.
The version 6 doesn't reload properly and crashed about 5 times in the last 2
days. The CPU and memory monitors are going off the scale for each page update.

With such performance hit, I think I will have to pass up the RealPlayer
integration with Netscape6 for now.

Just be careful of what sudo access you give. For example, do not give
sudo access to perl or vi because they can become excellent hacking tools.

I am trying to get MacNFS ( www.thursby.com )
working but it keeps asking for PCNFSD support
from the server before it will try to connect.

I can find absolutely no reference to PCNFSD

For our purposes, these machines are only being used internally by
development and QA teams. Everyone already has root access to them
anyway (until I replace it). So we're not concerned with hacking or
security issues.

I just need to know who's hand to slap with a wooden ruler when they
make changes that breaks something else, or forget to check in their
code changes into the source control database (we use Perforce, by the
way. An excellent tool).

I already have a list of IP addresses on my whiteboard, in case they're
still logged in, then I know who they are. Sudo looks to be a better
solution.

Thanks to all,

An example from "A Practical Guide to the UNIX System" (by Mark G. Sobel)
suggests using
/([^)]*)/
to match the shortest string enclosed within parentheses. It means,
"Find a left parenthesis, followed by 0 or more things that are NOT a
right parenthesis, followed by a right parenthesis."

The expression
/(.*)/
would find the longest string of 0 or more characters enclosed within
parentheses.

So the trick would be to construct the correct expression using the
beginning and ending characters or strings...
