[RBW] Re: Warning: non-scientific experiment under construction (650B vs 700C)

2011-02-26 Thread pruckelshaus
The last frame I built, still at the painter's, is built for either
650b or 700c's. Can't wait to get it back and built up so I can
ride! It fits 650x42's as well as 700x28's without any problem
(fenders would be a tight fit with 700x28's), I do need to swap brake
calipers when I swap wheel size, though. Geometry is 73 parallel, 57
square but with a 6 degree sloping top tube so the actual ST is more
like 52.5, BB drop is 68mm, stays are 420mm, rake is 47mm.

[RBW] Good decaleur for use with an Acorn Boxy Rando

2011-03-23 Thread pruckelshaus
I just bought my first handlebar bag, an Acorn Boxy Rando. I am not
running a front rack or fenders, but adding a front rack isn't out of
the question if it's needed. What decaleur/rackaleurs have you all
used with success paired with the Acorn?

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] Re: Good decaleur for use with an Acorn Boxy Rando

2011-03-24 Thread pruckelshaus
Well, for me, a "loaded" handlebar bag would be a windbreaker, a
snack, my wallet (which, these days, is certainly not heavy), and my
cell phone. With that said, I've not run a handlebar bag before, so I
don't know what even a couple of extra pounds up front is going to
do. On my "fast" bike, a 700c rando, I don't have braze-ons for a
rack. so the Rackaleur might be the best thing to try. However, on my
"slow" bike, a 650b path bomber/shopping bike, I did fork blade barrel
braze-ons for a VO/Nitto style rack. I guess I'll start with the
Rackaleur and wee how it works with both bikes, and if I don't like
it, I'll install the rack on the 650b and use that for rides where the
bag is warranted.

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] Re: Framesaver Time?

2011-03-24 Thread pruckelshaus
Framesaver or Boeshield T-9. Also make sure you're pulling the stem
and seatpost at least once a year to clean off and apply a fresh coat
of grease. For good measure, if you have a long-handled cylindrical
brush (sort of like a large, nylon bristled gun barrel brush), run
that through the steerer and then reapply framesaver. If it's a
REALLY wet environment (I see you're in Seattle...), I'd also make
sure you're overhauling the headset and BB at least once a year...even
if your BB is sealed, you should still pull it and grease the threads.

Well, I have an Acorn roll hanging from the back of my B-17, so that
takes care of tools and tubes, and I have a pump on the downtube.
Might see some use bringing a six pack and some Ben and Jerry's home
from the store on Friday nights.

I do want to see if Google Maps on my Droid X is usable under the map

And no worries on the sidetrack, I've built two frames and I think my

Well, winter project 1, my second frame, a sloping top tubed lugged

tomorrow AM and should be built for a ride on Sunday, so that's nearly
done. Looking forward to trying SRAM (Apex) for the first time.

I have 20BF of red oak waiting to be turned into a hall table for my

[RBW] "budget" 650b wheels?

2011-04-22 Thread pruckelshaus
I'm building a 650b frame for my wife to use as a commuter; the last
frame I built was a similar frame for myself. I found a set of new
650b wheels on eBay a while ago for a crazy price ($80 BIN...I
couldn't buy the parts and build them myself for that little) built up
from Weinmann Zac 19 rims, DT spokes (no-name nipples, which I
replaced with DT's), and Deore freehub. I'd love to find a similar
set of wheels for my wife's pending build, but my search has turned up
empty. Does anyone know a source for a budget 650b wheelset that will
take a 9/10 speed Shimano cassette?

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Why Freewheels? WAS: Experiments in Rolling Resistance and Low Speed Stability

2011-06-08 Thread pruckelshaus
Quill stems allow for far easier (and far more) bar height adjustment,
which is why I prefer them. I also prefer threaded headsets because I
can remove the bar & stem from my bike and not have the fork fall out
onto the floor. Threadless headsets were invented by an industry that
was lazy and wanted to make more money (by only having to stock a
single fork/steerer combo), and were a solution in search of a
problem...especially at the beginning. Sure, now they allow things
like CF steerer tubes, but there's no way in hell I'd run one of them,
either.

Just my $.02

Sold it, built my own frame, and all is right with the world. I don't
know if it's because of my racing background (I was certainly no LA,
but I raced through my teens) or being used to having plenty of crotch
clearance with mountain bikes, but having the top tube right up in my
junk wasn't a good feeling.

[RBW] Re: Bilenky Chuckwagon, aka Kevin Lau's bike limo

I hate to be obtuse, but what's the point of this bike model? Just to
have fixed mounts for a child seat? In what way is this superior to a
"beater" bike with a child seat attached? I'm not trying to be
combative, I'm just trying to figure out what the market for this

Yes, but it's too bad that Chris has decided that nobody needs to ride
172.5mm cranks. He's a fool for making that kind of decision, and has
certainly lost a good amount of business because of it...including my

Nothing scientific, they just feel right. They allow me to maintain a
cadence of between 80 and 90, without tiring me out, while still
giving me a sense that I'm putting power to the pedals. I'd tried a
set of 170's a couple of years back for about a month, and I felt like
I was riding with my shoelaces tied together. 175's are just too long
and I can't get my cadence high enough.

Call me Goldilocks, I guess.

[RBW] Re: Feeling Abondoned

2010-01-14 Thread pruckelshaus
I actually came here to post a lament about the loss of what is
probably the only "true" 700x28mm road tire out there. I simply
cannot believe that ruffy tuffy/rolly polly sales are not enough to
support having a new set of molds made. At the very least, I hope
that whomever makes the tires (Panasonic?) decides to make an
identical tire all their own to make up for this. I won't say that
this decision has me pissed off, because, hey, it's just a bike tire.
However, often enough in recent memory I've asked myself silently "why
the hell would/did Grant/Riv do that?" that I now understand that my
Riv phase might be coming to an end.

I might even pick up a couple spares, before they're all gone...

[RBW] Re: this oughta be a motto for this group

2010-01-20 Thread pruckelshaus
I have four:
* Klein mountain bike...honestly, it's never even been really off
road, but it's perfect for riding around the neighborhood and the bike
trails with my kids.
* Rambouillet with Dura Ace 7700 STI triple stuff mostly
* Specialized Allez steel with downtube shifters and nice, fat
tubulars for when I want to get kinky
* "Shopping bike" - Schwinn Prelude frame, parts out of the bin, for
trips to the store.

The "loophole" - a Burly Rock-n-Road tandem that doesn't get ridden
very much because it just doesn't fit me all that well. I should
probably sell it.

And on deck - I'm building a randonneur style frame, 73 parallel
angles, 57cm square, 435mm stays, low BB out of Columbus SPX. I've
got all of the main triangle miters done, will spend this week
cleaning up the tubes and lugs, and will tack braze it next week.
This will replace the 60cm Rambouillet, which is "right sized" per
Riv, but still feels way too big even after a year of riding it. The
sad thing is, even though this is my first frame, I'm already thinking
about the second.

The only bike I would add to this is a true classic of some
sort...along the lines of a full NR Paramount, Cinelli Super Corsa, or
an originally equipped Peugeot PX-10.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Build Question - SRAM Apex, anyone?

The Apex stuff looks really interesting, and I'm considering putting

main question I have is...the brakes don't look like they are short
reach; I wonder if they are something other than 39-49? There's
nothing on the SRAM site that lists those specs.

Anyway, yeah, looks like interesting stuff, and at about $750, it
should compete well with 105. However...is it available yet? I
remember reading that it would be a summer release.

[RBW] FS: 60cm Rambouillet, blue/white

2010-06-11 Thread pruckelshaus
I finally got the frame that I built for myself back from the
painter's, so it's time to sell the Ram.

It's a blue and white, 60cm, in excellent used condition. A couple of
nicks, but it's never been crashed or dropped. I believe it's a Toyo
frame. Alignment is perfect. Selling as a frame/fork/Shimano 600
headset, but here's a picture of the complete bike:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v344/127/70/1160592711/n1160592711_30168618_4077.jpg

The parts will be off this weekend, I want to get in one last ride or
two.

Asking $1,000 plus shipping. US only. I'm in SE PA (19426) if you'd
like to pick up. If you buy it and have parts to build up as a
complete bike, I'll swap your components over for free.

Email me at pruckelsh...@gmail.com if interested.

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] Re: Question Concerning External Bearings BB for triple

2010-07-05 Thread pruckelshaus
I have a set of Suginos on my bike. A not terribly good pic here:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs534.snc3/30288_1502481239577_1160592711_31456699_5981294_n.jpg

Found a product pic here:

http://www.qbike.com/product/s/Sugino-RD-5000-Direct-Drive-Road-Crankset.shtml

As far as I can tell, they are Alpina's with a "pipe" bottom bracket,
but other than that, they have a more traditional look. I got them
used off of ebay, they came with cheap-o Sugino rings and Tange
bearing cups, so I swapped the rings with older style Ultegra rings
(for a 52/42/30), and I picked up a set of Dura Ace BB cups, which
work fine.

I like them a lot, meaning that I installed them and don't have to
think about them.  I'd like to find the same cranks in a 110 double;
I'd like to try running a 34/46 compact double.

[RBW] WTB: Parts for a decent grocery bike

2009-07-09 Thread pruckelshaus

I'm building a grocery bike that I won't have to worry about...don't
want my Ram getting stolen. The foundation for this is a mid 80's
Schwinn Preludem decent enough frame but ratty enough to not deserve a
second look by the miscreants.

Anyway, I'm looking for the following:
* Triple crankset that will work with a 122.5mm bottom bracket
(Suntour XC Pro) -- so an older XT/DX/LX or Suntour XC Pro/Comp/
Expert. 170mm or 175mm is fine.
* Triple front derailleur, 28.6mm clamp, bottom pull.

Nice to finds, but I have stuff that will work:
* 27" or 700c touring type (something that will take a 28mm or wider
tire) wheels that will take a Shimano 8s cassette.

I'm just west of Philadelphia, PA...local would be great.

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] WTB: Wider 700c tires, used is fine

2009-08-03 Thread pruckelshaus

I need one last thing for my grocery bike (sadly, not a Riv, it's a
heavily modified Schwinn Prologue, ugly enough to be ignored by the
miscreants) -- a set of wider 700c tires, something along the lines of
a Jack Brown or a Speedblend, that will fit properly on a set of Sun
CR-18 wheels. 28c will probably be too narrow, 32-35c would be
great. Used is fine (in fact, they would probably be preferred), so
long as the tires still have some miles left in them. Let me know if
you can help me out...

Actually, the dryer was fine, and was donated to Habitat for

quickly this thread went down the clothesline path :P

I have had a couple of people contact me about Romulus frames; their
asking price is well within my budget (even after the expense of a set
of Bigmouth 57's and a pair of Ruffy Tuffy's is figured in)...so
unless someone has a Rambouillet or AHH frame out there for a killer
price, I think i've found what I need.

With a wire-spoked, drilled-flange, metal-rimmed wheel, that's what
happens. Take away any one of those factors, or worse yet, more than
one of those factors, and catastrophic failure will be the name of the
game. I realize that I'm preaching to the retro-choir, but you'll

my cold, dead hands.

[RBW] Anyone here made their own wooden fenders?

2008-09-12 Thread pruckelshaus

I'm a fair hand at woodworking, and am thinking about adding fenders
to my bike. I put two and two together and thought "What the heck,
make my own!" I haven't started the project yet...still in the
planning stage and was wondering if anyone here had done this.

What I'm planning on doing is using 3 layers of 1/8" hardwood veneer,
I'd like to use birdseye maple, more likely I'll use whatever I find
at Lowe's. I'll slice the veneer into 2" or so wide strips and soak
them in water. Beforehand, I'll build a set of clamshell forms that
are the radius of the wheel & tire + 1/2" that can be clamped
together; I'll probably use stacked & glued 2x10's cut in my bandsaw
(I'll need to graft them in order to achieve the proper radius). Once
the wood has soaked for a couple of minutes, I'll glue the layers
together using polyurethene glue (not sure if this is the best choice,
but it cures in the presence of moisture), lay them into the forms,
and then clamp the forms together and allow everything to set.
Question -- will the formed wood retain the form's shape, or will it
"relax"? Once done, I'll release the fenders from the form, trim
either on my jointer or my band saw, bevel the edges on the router
table, sand, apply a couple of coats of spar varnish, and then drill
and attach hardware. Not sure what I'll do about hardware, probably
just make my own brackets and buy a set of stays.

Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks,

Pete

[RBW] Re: Anyone here made their own wooden fenders?

2008-09-13 Thread pruckelshaus

Looks cool. The most dofficult part of that would probably be
fabricating the forms that hold the fender to shape while the glue
cures. Looks like all he did was take pie slices out of the veneer
before layup, then make sure that the pie slices don't match up when
layed up. I like his stays and hardware, wonder where he sourced them
from.

Let me get a set of straight ones out of the way before I tackle
something like this :)

Put in a Chris King 2-nut and you'll never need to buy another

Other than that, I'd probably go for one of the Tange headsets that VO

[RBW] Swap my 60cm Ram frameset for your 58cm Ram or 58cm/700c AHH?

2009-02-09 Thread pruckelshaus

After yesterday's ride, I've come to the conclusion that my new-ish
(to me) blue & white 60cm Rambouillet is just a tad too big, and I'd
be happier with a 58cm frame. Anyone out there in the opposite
situation, unhappy with their 58cm frame and looking for a slightly
larger size? If so, shoot me an email at pruckelshaus AT gmail.com

My Ram is in excellent shape, with some very minor paint chips from
the previous owner, but no tube dings and the frame is straight and
true. Pics available.

[RBW] Riv-ish retro cycling gloves?

2012-07-14 Thread pruckelshaus
I'm stuck wearing lycra backed Pearl Izumi cycling gloves. Comfy enough,
but I hate the look. I used to have a set of Cannondale crochet backed
fingerless cycling gloves back in the 80's, and I'd like to find something
similar.

Dromarti makes gloves that I think would be perfect -
http://www.dromarti.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15_33&products_id=27
 -
but $138 is a bit ridiculous. Does anyone know of a source for a similar,
high quality, but more affordable glove? I now that Riv carries a similar
glove for $15, but I actually prefer a darker color leather.

[RBW] Fork rake radius

2012-02-18 Thread pruckelshaus
IMO, there are pleasing to the eye fork rake radii, and then there are
those that are not. The "new" Betty falls into the latter category:

Does anyone else think this looks like the forks got slammed in a car door?

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks I suppose. I do like the color,
though.

[RBW] Re: 1988 Suntour Small Parts Catalog, oddities

Pre-select was used with the indexed stem shifters. IIRC, it had a
spring-loaded cable mounting bolt on the RD that allowed the rider to shift

once they started pedaling.

[RBW] Looking for a few non-Rivish items...

2011-10-01 Thread pruckelshaus
Well, a few non-Riv and a few Riv

I have some bikes that I need to sell, and didn't get my act together enough
to sell them for the Trexlertown swap today. Ah well. I'll be ready for
Spring now.

Anyway, I need a few items to fulfill my master plan for selling these bikes
(involves whole-bike component swapping, gnashing of teeth, and tearing of
hair). As such, I was wondering if anyone has any of the following items in
serviceable condition that they would be willing to sell me:

ITALIAN threaded, square taper (Shimano), 111-113mm bottom bracket.
Cartridge or cup-n-cone will work, this is for an Ultegra tricolor crank.
A half dozen or so crank/BB fixing bolts with washers, 14 or 15mm will work
A pair of 700x23-25 tires in good shape with tread left.
Decent 122.5mm square taper BSC bottom bracket. XC Pro, XC Expert, XT,
etc., are fine, so long as it spins smooth
Nitto/Specialized "Dirt Drop" stem, preferably black (yeah, I know, keep
dreaming), 80 or 100mm will work.
A pair of basic road pedals with clips and straps

[RBW] ISO: SunTour XC Pro right cantilever caliper, silver 25.4 Dirt Drop stem

2011-10-30 Thread pruckelshaus
I had a set of more or less NOS SunTour XC Pro cantis (the last version,
champagne colored ones) to build my wife's new bike up with, but one of the
right (the side with the cable clamp) caliper is bad and doesn't allow the
caliper to freely move on the boss. Through swapping parts around, I have
narrowed it down to the caliper itself.

Is there ANY chance that any of you out there have (ideally) just a
caliper, or even a set in decent condition that I could buy in order to get
my wife's new bike on the road?

I'm also looking for a Nitto or Specialized Dirt-Drop stem (or similar
combination of extension/rise in 1"), 100mm, silver, with a 25.4 clamp. I
have a black (really more of a gunmetal color) Nitto in good condition in
the same dimension that I can trade.
