I bought a "Riv-sized" Rambouillet, and felt exactly the same way. Sold it, built my own frame, and all is right with the world. I don't know if it's because of my racing background (I was certainly no LA, but I raced through my teens) or being used to having plenty of crotch clearance with mountain bikes, but having the top tube right up in my junk wasn't a good feeling.
