[RBW] Looking for a 57 or 55cm Bleriot...

2011-05-13 Thread S.Cutshall
Hopefully I am correct in assuming those sizes were produced in the
Bleriot line?

I have a 59 and it is too big... I have tried and tried to make it
work for me, I cannot.

A trade would be best but I doubt such circumstances of luck & timing
exist... so if someone has one in either a 57 or 55 I'd be very
interested in talking... and then I am going to sell mine--the
frameset that is.

Please email me if you or someone you know has one.

Thanks-

[RBW] Re: Looking for a 57 or 55cm Bleriot...

2011-05-21 Thread S.Cutshall
Okay...
Have leads on a 57 & 55 (fellas with those--didn't forget about either
of you, just was waiting until I had a Professional bike-fitting,
which I had earlier today)...

The 57 won't work, the 55 will and would now like to up the ante of
possibility by adding: any chance someone has a 53cm Bleriot frameset
that they want to sell or trade?

Seems the 53 would be optimal and the 55 very doable.

So any 53 owners out there?

Please email me and let's talk (I'll wait a few days and if no dice,
Jason I would like to talk about your 55).

Thanks much:

Otherwise, (Bill, right?) I am leaning toward that 57cm frameset

[RBW] Bleriot Seatpost Binder Bolt Q...

2011-06-13 Thread S.Cutshall
My newly swapped Bleriot frame seems to have a 'soft' seatpost binder
bolthead (over the course of my rides the seatpost/saddle is heading
south)... Upon this happening and noticing it the first (2nd, 3rd... )
time, I found that the bolthead is pretty rounded and barely taking an
allen wrench when I insert.

Anyone here know what length bolt I should go with as a replacement?

[RBW] Re: Root beer Rambouillet

2010-08-09 Thread S.Cutshall
Hope you win, but let me add please...

I can never quite understand the eBay "Refresh-n-Stress" method of
bidding. Recently I've won a coupla things on The Bay, and even more
recently I've sold [and am selling] a metric poop-ton of high end
drums & cymbals... and it seems to me that it's logical to approach
these sorts of things with two thoughts:

1. Know your limit, your budget, what you are willing to go to... and
then that's that.

And then...

2. Just use something like 'Snipe It' [which is a legal eBay bidding
device].

And really, that's it.

PS-> You can read more about 'Snipe It' here [and download it too, if
interested]...

Just a suggestion to minimize stress and such...

[RBW] Re: Root beer Rambouillet

2010-08-09 Thread S.Cutshall
Redundant question, Steve...

that's what I am saying [only exception being: known fact that most
bidding on high-end/desirable goods on The Bay happen in the last 20
seconds... so again, know your Max-Bid, program it in for the
recommended 6 second protocol, walk away, enjoy life, and then check
it after the fact].

Re: the last 20 seconds...

Recently sold a very high-end 18" bass drum on The Bay. It was a 0.99
cent auction [let the market decide and all that... but very risky on
my behalf as a seller], 7 day auction, bass drum was stalled at
$199.99 for 6 of those days [not good on my end]... final day, 30
seconds to go, each time I hit Refresh on my browser to watch my day
get better [or much, much, worse], the bidding popped from 3 bids
@199.99 to 17 bids and a final of $1034.00.

[RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread S.Cutshall
Odd? Unrelated? I think not [Rivendell sells Porto-Shaving-Cream,
so... ].

I am not one to shave often. When I do it's for two distinct reasons:

1. I look up, while brushing teeth, and jump with fright at what I
see looking back at me in the mirror.

Or...

2. My wife and/or daughter tell me to [because I repulse them].

Fair enough.

For years, and because I have a 'Stache, I've simply used an 'lectric
trimmer [no, not an actual electric shaver--more of an electric beard
trimmer] and it leaves a fair amount of stubble... so I am not really
ever -that- shaved right after I shave.

So, I grew [pun] tired of the stubbled look and began a search for a
non-electric shaver that doesn't look an Apple product or like a Casio
"Baby-G" wristwatch, or is not disposable... and it took a minute
too. And then I found a site called "Classic Shaving"... wow, the
choices were about as endless as looking for a new tire pump on a walk
through Interbike.

In the end, I selected a nice German shaver, a Merkur [just like my
dad used when I was a youngster], some blades, a nice brush, mug and
some cream. Cost around $160.00 for the whole setup, but I figure
it'll save money over time, space in land fills and I can have a
better shave [when I remember to do it].

Anyway else here shave 'Old Skool'?

Was tempted to enter my toes into the world of Straight Razors but the
prices for those [plus all the additional accessories] -and the
thoughts of all the failures while in the Learning Curve stage Re:
loss of facial skin- put the kibosh on that.

PS--> Guess this could be a Lady-Topic too [but I doubt many women
would own up to having facial hair that needs shaving].

[RBW] Check 'dem Chains Folks

2010-08-29 Thread S.Cutshall
Out on a rather long Pug ride today. Climbing a mother-steep hill,
about 12 miles from home, out of the saddle & pushing hard, SMACK.
Chain snapped 5 links away from the master-link.

Ribs directly into handlebars, pubic bone directly into toptube...
ouch.

Slow, limping, walk home.

Check your chain before it checks you.

Just thought I'd share my day...

[RBW] Re: Check 'dem Chains Folks

2010-08-29 Thread S.Cutshall
I am doing fine, just sore and bruised [about to ride the Bleriot to
get a new chain for the Pug].

No, I saw nothing obvious on the chain -but it was quite dark and with
my h-bar light didn't notice much... and no inspecting it later as I
chucked the chain into a garbage can near the place of failure- so I
can't report any defects, etc. Chain had to be worn though... I've
put a little over 12,400 miles on the Pug since Feb. of this year [and
the chain was well-used last year].

Pug does great in the sand, Patrick... just take the tire pressure
down to 4 or 5lbs PSI and go, go, go...

[RBW] Re: Check 'dem Chains Folks

2010-08-29 Thread S.Cutshall
Agreed... never broken a chain before last night.

Thinking it pretty rare.

Hoping it, extremely rare.

On a different note: just back from riding to LBS for chain [and some
derailleur cables--as they looked pretty hanked]... 7 bucks a pop for
cables [and a parking lot full of late model Saab's, Volvo's & BMW's
with roof racks loaded down with high-end carbone bikes, hmmm]?

[RBW] Re: Check 'dem Chains Folks

2010-08-29 Thread S.Cutshall
Thanks.

Yeah, this year my project has been, what I call, "The Year of The
Pug". I've tried [am trying] to do all my rides [pleasure, errands,
etc] via The Pug.

Mostly successful so far, a few rides on the Bleriot/a couple on my
custom [before I stored it away] and a couple on loaners whilst
traveling, but otherwise... it's been All-Pug, All-The-Time.

I shot for 20K last year, almost made it too [short by 300 miles],
wanted 25K this year, got The Pug and realized "impossible, unless I
am willing to either weigh 90 pounds by X-Mas & land in the ER and/or
begin intaking an additional 2000 calories per day"... so I feel like
16-17K by year's end on the Pug is good.

Next year... less Pug [it's fun, but it's laborious too].

Perhaps... I know this though, my ribs and pubic bone would

[RBW] MUSA Knickers

2010-09-03 Thread S.Cutshall
Just took delivery of many pair[s?] of MUSA knicks in blue, gray &
black. Wonderful, comfy, long-lasting [been wearing my old ones -in
gray & olive- for 3+years and the only signs of wear are the back
pocket stitching [an easy fix if you're a back pocket user -which I am
not] has come undone from friction caused by time on-saddle] and all-
around great looking.

Just thought I'd mention them and trigger some folks to purchase them
[mainly so Grant keeps on keeping them stocked for me!]...

I wear knickers year-round [around the house, to ballet recitals, one
funeral, two weddings, hundreds of bike rides, a few times in the car
and many times on the plane] and have tried many others... the MUSA's
are my favorite and honestly, the best I've owned [without naming some
very high-end brand$ that sit in my dresser].

Buy 'em & try 'em if you haven't... and if you have already bought
some in the past & liked them, buy some new ones!

while sparking a flicker in the eyes of the fashionably pickier"]

Hilarious! Thank you for the laugh [and I agree... same holds true

too many years at too big a weight. Muscles or not, I am not showing
that much leg to society, society deserves better. Kept the shorts

[RBW] Re: FS: Rapha Waxed Cotton Cap - "Gentleman's Cap"

2010-05-26 Thread S.Cutshall
I don't know much, but I do know this:

I will NOT sleep well until I can completely adorn myself in all
things Rapha. I am not just talking what's available currently, I am
talking soaps, shampoo, conditioner, sheets, pillowcases, the paint on
the walls of my abode...

I want my daughter to wear Rapha undies with Rapha Smurfs on them, I
want my wife to wear a Rapha cologne when we sit next to one another &
eat Rapha-made food.

A ton of Rapha is still four tons too little in my book.

I dream of a World, and that world is called Rapha World.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rapha Waxed Cotton Cap - "Gentleman's Cap"

2010-05-26 Thread S.Cutshall
Couldn't agree more...

I think Tarik nails it when he makes the comparison betwixt Grant,
Smurf, Rapha, Underoos & Undies. Think about it...

Grant sells the AHH, it's Blue, so are Smurfs. Then you have Rapha
and Pink [the color, not the angst-ridden singer person]... next, Pink
is the opposite of Blue when it comes to baby boys and girls...

enter Underoos.

The babies grow up, graduate from diapers and clothes [in Pink or
Blue] to Underoos & eventually -time permitting- undies, watch the
Smurfs [again, the whole Blue thing], and with Time, Money, Bad Backs,
Sore Necks, a fondness for Boy Scouts and Tweed, Hemp Twine &
Education:

get an AHH from Rivendell [enter Grant -and- the color Blue, again]
and talk about Rapha [Pink, see?] on this list.

Makes sense to me.

PS--> Aren't iPhones made in China? Wonder what Apple's cost per unit
is... me thinks, it's a fair bit less than Street Price. Rivendell
Connection: my iPhone has a Tweed case wrapped in Hemp Twine.

No, it's not in reply to your post.

wife's Bob Brown "BBC#2"], while it's gone through about 20 different
incarnations as my body has changed in the last 4.5 years and is still
sprite and nimble in its current setup, has a geometry that no longer
can really be altered through components and adjustments to suit my
body. It's what I call, "Comfortably uncomfortable".

I am stripping it down to just frame & fork and packing it away. I'll
never sell it [how could I?] but I am of the mind that it is time to
look forward. Some of the parts will go onto the Bleriot, some to the
Parts Bin.

All that said, Bob is building me another bike. So that one [a full-
on/purpose-built Rando bike w/S&S couplers], plus the Bleriot [Big
Dummy and Pugsley], and I am covered in my estimate.

After quite a bit of thinking, and then talking with my wife, it's
time to pack it away... but I am excited about what's next. And
what's next for me is personally very big... and I'll be needing a
bike that can take me into this new chapter.

Made myself two basic promises at the start of all this: No.1 is
intact and held close to heart, and accomplished & maintained daily;
No.2, well that one... it's time to start paying up on that one
because I have to know what I am capable of.

Heavy heart, blah, blah, blah, yada, yada [but it is kind of heavy
honestly said: BBC#1 saved my life]...

When I straddle my Bleriot [even in it's 'naked' state of just
frameset & wheelset], it fits me perfectly in terms of SO height @59.

Looking forward to getting some components on 'er so I can see & feel

No fireplace, for that matter-we are renters and the closest we've
come to a fireplace is our current house here in Portland, OR-which
has a wood burning stove in the living room that doesn't work!, but...

earlier today I was getting ready to dismantle my bike, couldn't, rode
it one last time, and then met my girls for caffe.

My wife, Amy, then told me she had a plan, "We will pack it away, but
when we get moved and someday settle down for good... the frameset
gets hung on the wall, or over a fireplace."

Ironic...
So, you and her must be thinking alike.

[RBW] Re: do you ever get tired of....

It's a very difficult word for some:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30264...@n00/4648524708/in/set-72157624155996428/

...but we are trying...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30264...@n00/4648164637/in/set-72157624155996428/

That said, I'd bet a Rivendale coin purse that Grant & Crue don't
really care either way as long as the person[s] mispronouncing the
word have an inclination to look into their products.

Saying a word incorrectly, is still saying the word in the end... for
example- better, in my mind, than saying "McDonald's", "High Fructose
Corn Syrup" or "Bike NashBar" correctly.

Lots of great choices for S&S retro-fits, but my two strongest votes
would go to:

Bilenky in Philly [they do a ton and can -also- do your paint work

Bob Brown in St. Paul, MN [also does a ton of retro-fits too, and does

both DO great work on coupler retro-fits + re-paints**

[RBW] Hard to Let Go

2010-06-28 Thread S.Cutshall
Our daughter, Chloe, has been asking both me & my wife about our first
solo rides as kids. This all started easily enough, I didn't -for
one- see where she was going with these questions... eventually
though, it was obvious, she wanted to go solo herself.

We put it off for weeks, months, and then we ran out of excuses and
such:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/30264...@n00/sets/72157624241117087/

It was beyond difficult for me, sort of for my wife [but she's tougher
than I], and an adventure into the first steps of independence for
Chloe.

**Rivendell Content** Chloe has been in the Reader a couple times, and
she believe in 'Steel" as well as cloth tape & hemp twine... not to
mention, Friction Shifting. So, there!

Odd, when I see pics of Grant's bike[s]... if they are especially
crusty-looking, I always end up emailing him and asking for him to
sell me one.

Something about 'well used' gets me excited... I think it translates
to "Patina of Love". Better said, "Use equals Love, Use is Patina...
so, Patina of Love".

By the way, Grant never returns these emails, ever.

2010-06-29 Thread S.Cutshall
Naw, he won't touch this subject via email with me... I think it
concerns him that a floodgate would be opened: in a few years people
would pester him, and eventually he'd have only new -clean- bikes in
his garage. And eBay would be loaded with "Rivendell's Grant
Petersen's OWN Personal Bike" type auctions.

Can't blame him [even though I'd never sell the one he sold me, but
like I said-he won't sell me one!]...

And a few more new'ie pics added [near end of the Bleriot set].

First big problem though, daVinci crank + BB + Double Chainrings = 103
BB. Not the end of the world, but I was informed I couldn't go
'cheap' on the BB earlier today [was told Shimano goes only so
narrow... 107, so it might have to be a Phil BB].

The budget is popping waaay out of the bag now.

Anyone know of a BB in 103 that doesn't cost Phil-Money [daVinci crank
is square taper, so no Campy].

More pics en route soon... hopeful to test ride today [for my

the 107mm BB, was able to get a decent chainline-not to mention, the
front derailleur to actually get the chain onto the big ring... while

[RBW] Re: Bleriot Build is Coming Along

2010-07-04 Thread S.Cutshall
Thanks.

Have a lot of lil' tweaks to start tweakin' today [we aren't a big 4th
of July family ~cept the fireworks, which the daughter goes beezerk
over]...

Twine the bars.
Level the saddle better.
Tighten the bars [as I found out yesterday, quite a few miles from
home: needing a 'special' tool for the stem has its downsides].
Install the new cyclometer [so I can get back to my OCD'esque mileage
keeping -had to memorize where I rode, and then spent nearly an hour
recreating it on Bikely once home last night]. :-)
Get the B&M IQ Fly headlight installed.
...and then ride a lot today.

Still trying to acclimate to these Nifty Swifty's. Really like the
soft'ish feel on bumpy stuff, but taking corners at higher speeds/and
climbing steepy's... not so sure I am in Like with them. I keep
thinking the rear is flat'ing and/or I am going to fishtail the rear
of the bike out from under me.

Might try the Grand Bois or Pari-Motos.

79.82 miles today.

Got 'er taped & twined, computer on, bailed on the Brooks Swift for my
saddle of saddles [even if it doesn't look quite 'right' on the

much while riding. ;-)

Took the rubbers to 80psi front & rear...

so far, this bike -and the build parts- an absolute blast to ride!!

[RBW] Re: Bleriot Build is Coming Along

2010-07-08 Thread S.Cutshall
Thinking it was a mix of 'acclimation' [yep, you got 'er right... was
running 26x1.25 @100psi on my custom before I retired her] and just
plain 'new everything' syndrome [the bike, the build, the setup, all
of it, and more].

Really liking the Nif-Swif's @75 f/r these days.

I am 164 pounds.

You nailed it though: hard skinny tire syndrome for certain.

Even at 75psi, feels like I am in bathroom slippers running over all
the best that urban'ness has to throw at me [i.e. these rubbers are
plush yet feel fast'ish].

[RBW] Re: Event ride on Saluki coming up, need advise

2010-07-13 Thread S.Cutshall
I have no advise, but I can offer some advice:

avoid synthetic food & supplements [it's the equal of wearing lycra or
spandex on your outsides] in your insides; bananas/sunflower seeds/
walnuts & avocados do fantastic things; drink water before thirst
kicks in [as said many a time already]; don't overdrink water though
[sip/sip/sip]...

ride your pace [biggest mistake I see: folks riding others' pace: it
kills legs, body & spirit more quickly than all else]...

and be certain to engage in The Enjoyment of Doing Something New.

[RBW] Re: Bleriot Build is Coming Along

2010-07-15 Thread S.Cutshall
Will do, on the updates.

Full on Rando bike.

So far:
1" tubing, Sachs fork crown [possibly change that though, thinking
about options there ~would go with one of Bob's custom crowns, but
they are too wide for this build], fully lugged [of course], 130mm
spacing in the rear, might step into foreign waters and go with a
threadless steerer this time around [which of course allows for some
neat and inventive legroom for Bob to work some magic up front] and
'yep' to front/rear racks + fenders. No super-fat/no super-narrow
tires, just super medium. ;-)

Most exciting for me [well, all of it is exciting!]... Bob has asked
me, and it makes sense based on our relationship, to let him really
fly this solo.
We discussed basic details, wants/needs sorta stuff... and past that
he said, "You trust me, that I know... let me go alone on this. I
know what you love, I know what you're aiming for, I know what you've
got planned for your next 2-3 years on a bike, and I know what you've
accomplished on a bike so far."

He pretty much wrapped everything up with 'So, let me build you this
bike solo: it'll ride like you cannot imagine, and visually with the
little details I've got planned for things, the integration of things,
the lug carvings, all of it... well, let's leave it at, it's going to
be the most stunning bike I've ever built, period."

I couldn't really argue or disagree -on any level- with that kind of
plan.

Really that's about it for now. Oh, and it's 700c and going to be S&S
coupled too.

[RBW] Was Bleriot Build, Now Bob Brown Custom [final post on it though ~not Riv Specific]

2010-07-15 Thread S.Cutshall
Will do, on the updates [if I can make it relevant to Riv, and I
probably can't].
