[RBW] Re: Rivendell chicas
Good to hear from Rivendell Chicas. As an avid-reader-but-seldom- poster of the RBW Owners Bunch, I often lament that there is such a limited involvement from women (myself sadly included). Anne, yours is one of the few women's voices I see regularly, and so it's been sad to see that no one has responded to your post. When I read frequent references to things like "the wife," while I don't assume it is meant to be a put-down, it does contribute to making me feel that I am entering a male space. It's so often used when men are choosing and buying bikes for their women... I have loved few things more than learning about bike design, parts, and outfitting myself so that I can ride all year round here in Minnesota. What an adventure of the heart, spirit, and body. So, perhaps there are folks out there who have the opposite problem of big guys' bikes with their double top tubes and diagatubes and so forth, that seek recommendations for the little bikes, ones that are in the 48 to 52 cm range. For example, I've struggled with saddle bag/ rack combinations for bikes with not much room between the saddle and the fender! I found that Mark's Rack works rwonderfully because its height and distance from the saddle are infinitely adjustable. I've used it with my old Baggins Adam (the just-smaller-than-the-Hoss for you old timers). Also, at a recent--and really enjoyable--visit to Riv HQ, the women's small WoolyWarm vest and button-up, which I believe at one time were boasted in the ever memorable e-less catalog to be appropriate for Baffin Island, fits a 5'2", slightly plump, 50+ year old woman, and the little Hunq is a blast for the same sized/aged person. Maybe I'll even go crazy and post pictures of my 2006 red 50cm Saluki and my 2009 clear-coat Proto Bleriot set up as a poor woman's Quickbeam. Okay women, I'll stop being a lurker if you will. fondly, Liesl On Apr 2, 9:36 pm, Anne Paulson wrote: > On the Cinderella Classic today, my Roadeo didn't feel all alone among > all those carbon fiber thingies. [RBW] Re: Rivendell chicas
Whoa! Great to see all the posts and read all my fellow lurkers' posts! And what pretty bikes we have. It's especially fun to see the raw clear coat Rodeo with, among other fine accoutrements, a Finesse! Now that's a woman's riv! Okay, I'll get some pictures up on flicker and report back when I do. And a fast correction: the reissue WoolyWarms don't come in women's sizes; that was a typo. I meant to say that the small fits me, a small woman, just fine. The cardigan is really the same in fit, style, and wool as the original issue. My old one has so much dog-induced beausage from biscuits in the doit pockets that it probably won't handle being darned again--but that's another story. My main point is: great to hear from all the Riv Chicas. (And thanks to all the posters at large because I continually learn so much and get so inspired from the discussion threads and the photos.) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Stem sizing for Albatross and Moustache bars
We have a lot of bikes at our house with mustaches and noodles; I prefer m'bars and my partner prefers noodles. After our current round of bar experiments, I agree with charlie's formula. There are two things I'd add. First, consider a Dirt Drop stem if you really want m'bars raised. I had a short reach (7cm) technomic deluxe on my saluki and wound up switching it to a dirt drop after experiencing neck pain and trying the dirt drop on my proto bleriot. It really gets the bars up. And when they're really up, they kinda sorta start feeling like alba's, which I have on my old mountain bike. Second, my partner is trying m'bars on her new-to-us quickbeam after being in noodle land for years. we put the 7 cm technomic deluxe on for an experiment, and it appears to work like a charm. She's *loving* the access to brakes--this is a key great thing about m'bars, especially for bikes being used to commute or in city riding. I think a key is try a few experiments if you can borrow some bars and see what you like. We did it on the QB, and just let there be an embarrassing amount of cables sticking out during test rides (you'll need less cable going from noodles to m'bars). Granted, this is easier to do with a single, but it would work with bar-end shifters too. I found it not too daunting at all to do the switches, and I am not a bike mechanic. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Custom Appaloosa Update
Here's some fun news! I talked with Mark at Riv and there seems to be a groovy design solution to having a really small frame (in the 50cm range) with a diagatube! When last you tuned in (if you tuned in at all), you might recall (or might not) that Grant said that getting a diagatube, lugs, and clearance for 55mm tires and fenders was like trying to get 4 balls into 3 and a half holes. Here's how it's likely to go: 26" wheels (already knew that) and— —*double* small diameter old school Mixte-style diagatubes that are mitered and fillet brazed somewhere about the head tube. Where it's brazed to will be Mark Nobilette's choice; could be to the top tube, could be to the head tube, could be to the bottom tube. Mark was quite excited as he described it. It would be truly totally custom. Current thinking on the build kit is as follows: 58 Boscos, Meisha's Cork (normal), Paul Thumbies + Shimano BarEnds, brake levers to be determined, Tange/IRD NeedL BlastR Roller Drive Headset Phil "Rivy" Hub - Rivy 32h Rear Hub, New SON 28 32H Front Hub, 26" Aeroheat Rims, Schwalbe Big Bens Sugino XD2 wide/low double Crank 40t x 26t, VP Thin Gripster pedals Brooks Champion Flyer select, Paul Tall and Handsome seatpost As always, your thoughts are welcomed! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Custom Appaloosa Update
Hi friends, What a tutorial in gears! I'm learning quite a bit! A few comments on that topic from my perspective: I'm in the Edwin W camp. Simple shifting, a bail-out gear...that'll do for me. I, too, ride a single most of the time and I expect to keep my triple Saluki, and my 1x8 Friday is just swell. I live in Minneapolis and most of my riding is my 20 mile commute with only one big hill so this set-up gear-wise will be just fine for me. On the diagatube front, yes, William, they will tentaculate back to the whimsical seatstay/chainstay curls. It will be way cool. And of course, there will still be a top tube. And what are "those spanning webs to attach a h2o cage"? Gotta picture? On the delivery schedule: Riv is waiting for some tubes, then it will go to Mark Nobillete and he'll have a month/month and a half and then to Joe Bell and he'll also have a month/month and a half, so November would be pushing it. I want to fly out to Riv for the build and be a fly on the wall, so we'll see. On the color front: Khaki WWII green. Re: [RBW] Re: Gransfors Bruks Hatchets
I'm kind of excited to try a wood mess kit like sailors in the days of old. I'd like to weigh my titanium kit (just cup, bowl, plate) and my wood kit (same) to see the difference. I expect it wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Advantages of wood: much more thermal than single wall Ti, doesn't make clattering noise; feels wonderful in the hand; holds many stories. Disadvantages: can't use it over a flame; heavier than Ti. So one still needs some sort of pot/pitcher like the Snow Peak 700 ml mug. The beausage that a wood kit gets over time can't be beat. I have have a wooden Norwegian bowl and spoon that came over with my ancestors in the 1850's and they are still serviceable and spectacular. Of course, they don't go camping. As for stories, Cooper Ternes says it really nicely and, I think, in true Riv spirit: "Wooden bowls are full of stories. They can be beautiful. They can be functional. A wooden bowl contains the story of the tree and the forest where it grew. It contains the story of the maker, his tools and the tradition it is a part of. A bowl also contains the story and the memories of the food you eat. A wooden bowl is personable and warm, with frequent and consistent use it becomes part of your story." What if this was turned into bikes? "Riv bikes are full of stories. They can be beautiful. They can be functional. A Riv bike contains the story of the steel and the place where it was made. It contains the story of the maker, his tools and the tradition it is a part of. A Riv bike also contains the story and the memories of the rides you take. Hey Patrick, I hope inspiration does not lead to frustration! We have a motto on my team: "If it were easy, it wouldn't be hard!" [RBW] Re: Gransfors Bruks Hatchets
Reid, I do not speak or read English, but I have the great fortune of having a colleague on my team who does! At any rate, I don't think I've found an English Killi website. The good thing is that Norwegian is sometimes so close to English as to inspire giggles. 'Turkopps,' which is what I have, means a touring cup. 'Snapskopps' are cups for Schnapps, and 'Suppe Kopp' is a soup cup. 'Turkopp med karabinkrok' is a touring cup with—a carabiner! I haven't found a US stockist. My secret desire is that Riv would carry them. The middle size would be poifect. I mean, if they carry Swedish axes, they gotta have equal time for the Norskies (but then are the Danes and the Finns gonna wanna get in on this action? and I suppose Devold counts as Norsk...) But here's an English article on Mr. Killi: http://philholtan.wordpress.com/2013/07/18/trond-killi-norwegian-production-woodturner/ Yes, the wood burning was done by yours truly. To get such a magic cup, you would have to practice and practice! Or obtain a cup and suggest a barter with me! [RBW] Yet more travel coffee questions!
As a member (I think) in good standing of the Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen (and, I'm assuming, Wheelwomen), I am wondering if any other members have the solution to traveling with milk/half-n-half/cream. I am a coffee enthusiast (at home I grind with a Rancilio Rocky pull daily shots from a La Pavoni, so I am in WAY deep) and am still tinkering with the travel/camp/bike set-up. Now that my work has been taking me to the middle of North Dakota, I've found it's prudent to carry the whole dang kit-and-kaboodle with me even as I stay in hotels. I have an Aeropress, a Porlex mini mill, a Trangia, and various-sized Snow Peak mugs (double and single-walled; 350 to 700 sizes). I now seek the perfect means to carry, heat and even froth (!) milk that could nest, or come close to nesting, with what I have (the aforementioned list). If any group would have suggestions on this worthy challenge, it's this group! caffeinatingly yours, RCW in the land where the sky is about to burst with a foot of snow and we cheer for our Winter Olympians -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Traveling with a Sam - recs for a travel case?
I haven't traveled with a regular frame but have traveled a lot with my folding Friday, both domestic and overseas. Here are some general thoughts: my hard case with everything but my helmet always comes in right at about 48-49 pounds. Using folding or EZY pedals is highly recommended. Also, having lengths of cord and several washcloths to wrap around and tie onto the frame and around brake handles, etc, works well. You can also get flexible plastic tubing in large diameter, split it and then cut it to length to protect chainstays, seatstays, etc. I've carefully honed the following list over the past 3-4 years. It's not a camping list, but general all-purpose: Pump Tires, 1-2 folders Tire Gauge Tire Irons Tubes, 1-2 Patch kit Allen 3-way, 4-5-6mm ball-end Allen, 4mm ball end Allen, 5mm ball end Allen, 6mm ball end (Allen tool comment: it's actually nice to have all of them, especially if traveling with another person and bike) Multi Folder Leatherman or needle-nose pliers Latex Gloves Spare bolts, washers, and nuts Handlebar Bag (Keven’s/Carradice Zipped Roll/Sackville Saddlesack xsmall) Saddle Bag — Carradice Barley Reflector Triangle Seat Cover Irish straps, 2 each, long Irish straps, 2 each, short Water Bottle + cage (I pack my lights inside the bottle) Lights, Blinkies R/F Lights, Cygolights, USB cord (USB plug-in) Gino light mount Locks (I like the Abus Combination because I've gotten caught too many times with either me or Erin forgetting a key) Chico Bag for storing frame-packing materials -RCW -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Dog Snack Thievery-English riding jacket survives
Man that English riding jacket is tough! Our big goofball standard poodle, Jocko, tried to steal a dog treat from the pocket of Erin's ERJ by chomping through the fabric. Thanks all for catching the cassette/rear hub conundrum. More on that later. Anne, I already have the Supernova and have been using it for commuting for maybe two years. I know you've been exploring this in your thread. I like the light and especially like the rubber gasketted handlebar mount; it moves so easily from bike to bike and fits in a pocket. Erin has one too. We don't do off-road stuff generally but do ride snow after dark. It's been a fine light for our purposes. (Bill, the cowboy shirt arrived. C'est Magnifique!) Bobbie, I was struck by how many of us had stingrays as well. And the photo of the Orange Krate reveals my not wanting to ride more than a block/1% grade. [RBW] Beauty Shots of the Custom are up!
Hi friends, If you haven't seen it already, here they are: http://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/80720787036/heres-the-story-of-our-latest-custom-bike-for The bike is a treasure. So sure and confident and comfy and beautiful. It will go anywhere and everywhere. For a very long time. I went out on the Saturday Gentlewoman's ride with the local Rivsters. I can't really give a full report, though, because I was too sick with an upper respiratory thang to venture out in the hills with the rest of the gang (thank you Cora for sitting in the shade with me). Any time you borrow a saddlebag to tote Dayquill and a box of Kleenex is just not a good sign. Anyway, the little riding we did on Saturday lets me know that it is a joy to ride and fits like a broken-in pair of wonderful handmade shoes. I managed to get in the shortest of descents on a grassy Riv-style hill and I was in awe of its stability. Like a mountain goat. The paint has to be seen to be believed. JB added pearl to the paint that you can't see until it's in brilliant sun. And then it flickers and dazzles with the most subtle blues and yellows and whites...like you just found a treasure on the beach. Some details: The Select Flyer wasn't just a test saddle; it's the saddle. Paul seatpost, thumbies, and brakes; SON hub, White Industries MI5 rear hub, brown big bens, phil BB, shimano xt derailer. Will add cedar fenders and a nitto mini front rack. And how wonderful to say to my fellow low PBH friends like Manny: "Take it for a ride!" (Rich Lee, you're next in line!) Once it's set up here in Minneapolis, there'll be more photos and ride reports. Thank you everyone for your knowledge, skill, artistry, support and input. Re: [RBW] Beauty Shots of the Custom are up!
A few comments, etc... on vision: I have to say that the vision all long has been Grant and his merry band who dreamt up the Appaloosa. I rode the smallest protoype they and and fell in love. Then I rode a Hunq for the S24O in the Mt. Diablo foothills and fell in love with the confidence that came from 55mm tires. So my vision was just scooped up from everyone else. The big monkey wrenches I threw in were my PBH and an insistence on a top tube AND diagatubes. But I must also again give the nod to Keven, who told me to stand firm on all these wishes, especially the tire size; "Grant can figure it out. Give him a challenge." On Patrick M.: I THINK the chainstays are around 55cm, so crazy long—but someone at Riv should confirm. And I don't even know what 'the signature Rivendell "turn in"' is, so you'll have to elaborate. I know that will be a challenge as you are so shy to post. On Handling: I got a great tutorial from Grant on the challenges of designing a bike for a short/small person. It's hard to do right and as a result, most tend to be tippy/twitchy. I would invite Grant to offer his ideas because I'll not do it justice. What I can say is that as a short woman who's been around the block a few times, I've had my share of ill-fitting, ill-handling bikes. Not this one. You get on and it feels right, rock-solid, go anywhere, do anything, feel like it's a part of you. that was instant. I think Manny felt it too—but Manny, I'd love it if you chime in too. On My cold: finally improving. On seeing it up close: Folks passing through the Twin Cities are welcome to contact me to see the bike; just contact me off-list. And yes, I'm on cloud nine and speechless, and expect to be riding it when I'm 80! (By then, I might be regretting my insistence on a top-tube!) Karen, I note with such sadness the reason you are selling your bike. I hope your pup is okay and gets the surgery s/he needs. I know that there are people out here on this list who are in the 5'2" /75-76cm pbh or know someone who loves bikes who's this size; Manny and I aren't the only ones. GOOD little bikes are hard to design, and the QB is a spectacular bike. Not many of these out there. I know that Riv has a tough time selling the small bikes, and I find this a bit of a sad commentary. Certainly there are a lot of short women who would love this bike. [RBW] Re: Rivendell: Normcore for Cyclists?
H, this is curious. In the process of procrastinating on a little work, I went to one of the links: *"Normcore*—it was funny, but it also effectively captured the self-aware, stylized blandness I’d been noticing... They had been using it in a slightly different sense, not to describe a particular look but a general attitude: embracing sameness deliberately as a new way of being cool, rather than striving for “difference” or “authenticity.” In fashion, though, this manifests itself in ardently ordinary clothes. Mall clothes. Blank clothes. The kind of dad-brand non-style you might have once associated with Jerry Seinfeld, but transposed on a Cooper Union student with William Gibson glasses." I think this does not describe Riv at all. I think Riv designs things (bikes, bags, clothes, etc) that, foremost, they like and use, and they have skilled craftsman make these things. "embracing sameness deliberately as a new way of being cool" couldn't be more opposite from Riv. Although I do fondly recall that the first write-up of the wooly warm tweed sweater was that it could be worn on Baffin Island; perhaps this got confused with Iceland? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: bag for mustache bars?
I have four bikes with m'bars and while I love them, sympathize with the handlebar bag issues. I've found the following to be my favs: The Keven's bag / Sackville SaddleSack is fantastic, carries more than you'd think, and can go front or back. The SaddleSack has the advantage of easy tabs to open it one-handed and the reflector strip. The other great option is a Mark's rack and a L'il Loafer or a small Sackville TrunkSack. These two options are not mutually exclusive, and one can put other larger things in the rack as well. [RBW] Re: Cloth Tape, Twine, Shellac and Vanity
I've found that there's also variation in the honey color of the saddle itself. Just recently I tried orange cloth tape underneath with 6 coats of Bullseye amber and the final tone was very close to a darker honey seat that I have. I've used both amber Bullseye and Velo flakes on yellow cloth tape and synthetic cork tape and they are a good match for lighter seats. I agree on the 5-6 coats. Also, amber over kelly green is a good match for the british green brooks. Also, for twining, waxed irish linen in 3-ply or 5-ply comes in many colors and takes the shellack well. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: MKS Grip Kings
I tried the Grip Kings and, to my dismay, the proportions and axle location didn't work for me. I have a short wide foot, women's size 6, and wear very soft shoes when I ride (chuck taylors, soft-soled moccasins). The GP's were long for my foot but I think I could've gotten over that; it was more that the axle doesn't extend to the cage (port/starboard, not bow/stern so to speak) and created a lump toward the center of the pedal right under the ball of my foot. (This also happens with the new EZ quick-release MKS pedals.) I've wound up staying with the MKS touring pedals and found a home for the GK's. I'd recommend seeing if you can borrow a pair and try 'em out wearing your softest regular riding shoe before you make the purchase. [RBW] Re: duluth pack
Check out Frost River, which, after a hiatus, is back in the saddle. I believe when the Frost River folks parted ways with Duluth Pack folks, they got the old riv patterns in the deal? I'm guessing it was Frost River that was making the Baggins Keven's Bag and the Baggins Loafers before Baggins Hobits went away to be replaced by the Sackville Hobits--worksmanship on the Baggins looks identical to other Frost River products I own. And the boys I am going with will help on that front; they are fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants dudes who are newish dads who are just psyched to recover a glimmer their pre-dad days and/or community artists. see http://www.artshantyprojects.org/ to get a flavor of the adventures we have in the winter But now the fly in the ointment is heavy storms are predicted that afternoon and night, so we might need to reschedule. (I commute 20 miles in the winter in Minneapolis and in the olden days, I'd ride 400 mile days in the rain across Kansas on my Beemer, so I'm not a weather wimp--but I'm not so interested in my first S24O having the high likelyhood of a battle with a storm.) The original bar famous for stuffed hamburgers in the Twin Cities is Matt's on Cedar Ave in Minneapolis, "Home of the Jucy Lucy". Could this be the place? Except a waiter is rare--if ever-- mostly it's waitresses. If it isn't the place, put it on your list 'cause it's the real deal. Total dive bar with 60's era gold vinyl wall paper and home-made brass-and-wood duck art hanging on the walls. The cheese is so hot that they refer to it as a "molten core" and it's standard policy for waitresses to ask if you've had one before. If you haven't, detailed instructions for how to eat it are provided so that you don't burn yourself from the molten lava-cheese. The standard beverage is a Grain Belt Premium–or just "a Premium" but they recently added Blue Moon in some absurd attempt to class the joint up. Matt's is in my 'hood and responsible for the 10 pounds I added the first year I moved to Minneapolis. Riv content: nope, all my Saluki/Proto communting has not taken off my year of Juicy Lucys. [RBW] Grant in Minneapolis was Most Excellent!
What a great evening at Hiawatha Cyclery. Good people, tons of bike eye candy, heaps of meat and beer, and a most gracious guest of honor. And a special bonus, Grant's daughter was there too. Many jokes about every time her dad visits, the Betty Foy gets more reflector tape stuck to it. Rivs represented: Custom, Atlantis, Quickbeam, Saluki, Hilson, Beriot, Protovelo Bleriot, Hillbourne, Foy, Hungapillar Diagatuber...Am I missing any that were there? Also nice to match list-serv posters with faces and to meet list-serv lurkers! Finished off with an adventuresome sunset ride into Minnehaha Falls and the trails around Fort Snelling. Many flooded low spots left unforded; however, we did see what I'm pretty sure was a large spiny soft shelled turtle in the water! http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=76&Itemid=26 It was really wonderful. [RBW] Women Lurkers! Behold the Pedal Wrench!
Greetings Riv Chicas who read more than post! If you're like me, you have been in situations where you didn't have quite the right tool and/or didn't have quite the 'nough strength. I myself have uttered choice words whilst attempting to remove/install pedals. 1) A normal open-ended wrench is often too thick to fit in there, and 2) if it does fit, it's too short for my small 53 year-old women's hands to loosen them when they're tight and I'm trying to remember that the left side is reverse threaded. I finally invested 17 bucks in Riv's "venerable" Unior No. 61 Pedal Wrench. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tl017.htm If you struggle with numbers 1 and 2 above, you too will call this wrench venerable. Made switching out my pedals last night easy-peasy. You still have to remember that the left side is reverse threaded, but with this wrench, that's the only thing you need to focus on (and maybe adding a little grease to the threads). It could become among a bykin' girl's best friends. -liesl always-appreciates-good-mechanic-tips in minneapolis -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Saddlebags and smaller bikes
Yep, got the short legs and little frame, too. My go-to is a Carradice Barley. I switch it back and forth between a 50cm Saluki and a 51cm ProtoBleriot. The Saluki has a Nitto Mark's Rack that is really adjustable so it can snuggle up against the seat post under the seat AND ride low above the fender. Barley fits like a charm. On the Proto, there's no rear rack and the Barley snuggles up against the seat post under the seat even more so that it's forward of the highest spot on the fender. I carry a host of important things and detritus in my saddle bag and with a keven's bag or little loafer up front, I can carry most things I need except a computer (trypical for the Barley: tube, pump, a few tools, seat cover, irish straps, maps, rain gear, room for something warm to take off or put on, a snack, etc). It also has lashing loops on it. It's been a consistent great set-up for non-hauling rides. -liesl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Slat Grill is poifect for the well-equipped, food-loving S24O
Hi friends, I know there's been some previous discussion of not posting shameless promotions; however, I really think the Slat Grill is a Rivish item that you might not ever be aware of otherwise. It's a really simple portable camping grill perfect for a groovy S24O. I have no vested interest in the product other than I have one. It's incredibly versitle and couldn't be more simple. AND you can cook some really cool stuff on it. Plus it's made right here in Roseville, MN and the guy who designed it loves to eat great food. He cooked me a grilled pear with gorganzola cheese and honey that was out of this world. AND it fits in a Baggins Adam. Okay.
