[RBW] Re: Question for Cheviot Owners

2024-03-08 Thread KC
I love my 50 cm Cheviot (2015). My first good bike and it changed riding
for me. I may be considering selling because my husband will likely be
getting a Clem L or Platypus and I will need to be able ride the same
terrain as him so I may want bigger tires.

[RBW] WTB Brake Levers

2021-07-21 Thread KC
Due to some stupid mix-up I have only 1 brake lever for my bike so I need
to get a new set and that's not easy right now. I am hoping someone has
some they will part with. Bike is a 50cm Cheviot with Tektro R559 Brakes.
Anyone have anything that will work for me? Thanks.

[RBW] Re: BBH Closing?

2016-07-07 Thread KC

If I hadn't happened to walk by BBH after dinner when we randomly stayed in
Walnut Creek on the way home from visiting our son in the Bay Area, I
probably wouldn't have my Cheviot. Actually if Grant hadn't been there,
introduced himself and suggested a stop at HQ the next day to look at
bikes, I probably wouldn't have my Cheviot. That would be pretty sad for
me. I guess I was very lucky.

[RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-05 Thread KC
Obviously you and your family are the only ones that know how tight things
will be for you. And what sacrifices everyone has to make - because you
won't enjoy the bike if everyone else is doing without things they want.
But if there is enough money for everyone to have a little something
special while they deny themselves a lot of other things for a while, then
it is nice to give yourself a little gift to soften the blow.

In addition to more Clems coming in later, I will bet that a few months
down the road we'll see the occasional post from someone that has decided
they need to sell their Clem and you will have the opportunity to purchase
an almost new one for a little less money when you are in a better position
to evaluate how much of an impact it will have on the budget.

I am very sorry you were laid off. It is terrible to feel that things
aren't on your terms. But I also know there is a real good chance that a
year or so from now you will experience a wonderful sense of freedom that
you are on a new and better path.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell sightings

2015-11-08 Thread KC
Aw, I was hoping to see my orange Cheviot included in the sightings. Had a
great ride Saturday from the Richmond Bay area to Berkeley for lunch, then
around the Bay Trail. Such a beautiful day. We don't get to have rides like
that without generally starting off with a car trip, so really enjoy it.

Driving south now and sad to be leaving, but thx to a list member i have a set
of rock n roads to test out now so have to think about where to go on them.

[RBW] Re: Guess which one is mine...

2015-11-15 Thread KC
Easy. Yours is the beautiful bike. My husband and I are usually passed by
racers, head down, as we also meander along enjoying the scenery.
Sometimes he speeds up to show them he can keep up (probably really can't
for too long, though, but who cares). The only time I see bikes like mine
are when I'm with my family. But.
when I rolled my bike into a bike shop in Oceanside to buy a part, the guy
who helped me was thrilled to see his first Rivendell and spent a half hour
talking bikes and bringing his bike out to show us, and
when I watched over my bike waiting for lunch in the seaport village area
of San Diego someone walked up and asked if he could take a picture of my
bike cuz he rarely sees Rivendells where he lives

We have a relative planning to buy a bike. Pretty sure leaning towards a
(used) carbon road bike. I think that would be consistent with what he
sees around him (besides the beach cruisers). We asked him how he likes to
ride and every answer he gave said he should have something riv-like. He
is a very value-oriented, long-term-thinking, careful purchaser (buys good
high-end cars, used). I made him borrow my copy of Just Ride and hope it
helps him make a decision that works for him.

[RBW] Re: FS 54 Hunqapillar

2015-11-15 Thread KC
I agree with them. Babies don't have to cost that much. They use
everything for such a short time that it is usually easy to get the
essential barely used for next to nothing or passed around among friends.
And once you see how happy they are with cardboard boxes and kitchen
utensils, you see you don't have to buy a lot of toys either. Your bike,
on the other hand, is a 30-year bike and that cost very little when
amortized. Best to just make sure your wife also has a nice bike so you
can look forward to family outings before you know it. And since you will
need to keep your sanity as you enjoy every stage they go through, a bike
can be a very handy outlet.

My congratulations too. Your life will never be the same and in only in
the best way.

I think was an excellent decision.

[RBW] Re: The newest BLUG

2016-01-14 Thread KC
I am very proud to be a riv rider. Grant cares and no matter how he puts
that into action it makes a positive difference. Bless his heart for
wanting to maximize what he's doing, but he is doing something.

Here is how the daughter of one of my best friends throughout my school
years is trying to help my friend's sister and husband.
https://www.gofundme.com/rchrdky4(My friend has also spent years trying
to help out; her daughter is just trying to take the bull by the horns now)

Maybe even more OT in an OT topic, but we had better figure out how to do a
better job as a society / community because I see a huge problem coming our
way as my generation (the boomers) all retire on their underwhelming
savings. We are currently experiencing the lack of support available for
my 94-year old mother-in-law. No cost of living adjustment in social
security this year. In fact a decrease in income because she is losing a
benefit. Unfortunately, the facility she is in raised their price by over
10%. So much for no cost of living increase. Her family will make sure
she is ok, but I recognize that isn't something that is there for
everyone. I can only imagine what it will be like for a lot of people in
20 years or so if we don't collectively get our act together to find/fund
some solutions.

And, yes, as Deacon Patrick says, but for the grace of god this could be
any of us.

Joe, you have obviously converted several bikes to ebikes. Looks like we
may be moving to a hilly area that may warrant conversions to get us
through a few areas. Not sure if I would convert my Cheviot or Soma Groove
(assume it can be converted and then I wouldn't be messing with my
favorite). Can you help with input on the process and determining if a
bike is good candidate? Please feel free to respond off the list if more
appropriate.

[RBW] Put an e-bike kit on my Cheviot

2019-05-03 Thread KC
Very scary thing I just did. A major dilemma - make it so my "perfect" bike
could get up the hill out of my driveway so I could ride it everywhere or
risk ruining the ride on my perfect bike, not to mention making it a little
heavier to lift for the bike rack. But we had to do something so we took
the leap.

We had a shop in Pacific Beach (San Diego area) install the mid-drive kits
purchased from Luna Cycles. Took our first ride Wednesday and went up the
hill like it wasn't there. We set it up for maximum 20 speed and did not
put the throttle on, so just using the pedal assist. It took a few minutes
for me to get used to the feel of the pedal assist and how to shift now
using a combination of the gears and the assist. I thought the ride was
"different" but very good, a slightly different version of biking. Chuck
thinks I over-analyze and is just extremely happy with his new set-up on
his Space Horse.

I turned the system off completely after our first stop out of the
neighborhood and left it off until close to home again. Went up a hill I
am used to without any assist and it didn't feel much different, maybe a
little more effort required due to the added weight. That made me very
happy because I want to be able to ride "normally" as much as possible. I
had to give up my rear rack space for the battery. Maybe that wouldn't be
the case for a larger Cheviot - could it be installed where the bottle cage
goes? Chuck only had to give up 1 bottle cage spot. Since I will just
"borrow" one of Dave Carroll's pannier sets (he'll never notice), I will be
just fine.

Joe Bernard expressed concerns about the brakes on the Cheviot relative to
adding the kit. I understand what he is saying because it is a powerful
machine. But I am a slow, conservative, rider so I think I am ok.

Part of my agonizing was not knowing how much power I needed to add to the
bike to accomplish what I needed. I now know I probably have twice as much
as I need. Guess I'll be ready for anything. When Keven spec'd my bike he
said I would be able to go up a tree trunk. He was wrong, but now I think I
can. And, very important, my bike is still beautiful.

One added note. In my research leading up to the decision, I spent some
time thinking about battery fires and made sure it doesn't affect my
homeowner's insurance. My agent assured me it doesn't. BUT I did discover
that once you electrify a bike, it is a motorized vehicle and not covered
under your homeowner's policy. So not only does it not cover a loss to the
bike, but you are not covered for liability if you hurt someone while you
are riding it. I didn't want that added risk so I purchased liability
insurance for $108 each a year. To avoid the very high cost of coverage for
loss to the bike itself, I declared the value at $500, matching the policy
deductible.

[RBW] Re: FS: 56 cm Glorius, periwinkle

2016-03-31 Thread KC
This is the (very) bike that got me back to riding when she was gracious enough
to let me ride it around Morro Bay one day. I love that bike. I am almost 5'3"
75pbh and can ride it with the seat all the way down (my cheviot is 50cm). I
wouldn't buy that size for myself, but I dont think i would have to be much
taller for it to work.

Someone is going to get a very nice bike.

[RBW] Got my new Cheviot

2015-03-19 Thread KC
This may not make it up because I am a new member and my first posting from
over a week ago hasn't shown up. I just want to share with everyone that I
got my Cheviot 2 days ago and I love it.. Went on a long ride yesterday
(with my husband riding his "new" Space Horse thanks to this group) and had
so much fun. Should've bought a good bike years ago.

It is beautiful. Only problem is I refused to leave it outside and my
husband is not really pleased with it in the motor home. But my son
understood completely. He bought a used Cross Check last week and has it
in the house because he just loves looking at it (and he has several Rivs
out in the garage so it shouldn't be quite as special an experience for
him).

I just don't have any good bicycle knowledge, although I've really been
studying up and know 100 times more than I did 4 months ago. So it was a
little scary for me buying this bike, but I couldn't shake the way the
Rivendell philosophy spoke to me and I daughter-in-law graciously let me
ride her too-big-for-me Glorius enough that it helped. I had to really
rely on Keven. He patiently answered all my questions, but really I had to
just rely on him and I would say the bike is spot-on for me. Did I mention
it is beautiful, - in a very rugged, sporty way. I agonized over orange
because I loved my daughter-in-law's blue bikes, but the orange with the
blue highlights is just perfect.

As I said, I don't really know bikes but it was like a feast just looking
at the beautiful bikes in their shop Monday. The Clems and Clementines are
there with beautiful paint jobs. The curves on the Clementine are so
nice. Makes me want to buy one even though that would be the most
ridiculous thing I could do. It is a sickness. We'll be dropping by again
to pick up a few things - if there is a specific photo someone would like,
I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we took it. Let me know.

[RBW] Re: Got my new Cheviot

2015-03-19 Thread KC
Thank you so much for asking for pictures. Most of my pictures aren't the
best now that I look at them, taken to send my son detail photos, so I'm
just showing 2 views that I took yesterday while my husband was in the
store getting dinner supplies. (The metal chair in the background is NOT
attached to the bike in spite of how it looks, just poor planning for the
photo)

I loved my daughter-in-law's lugs so much and was a little bummed mine
wouldn't be as pretty, but I should have paid more attention because I have
beautiful blue hearts in my lugs and the nicest headbadge (not that that's
what it is all about because I have had 2 great bike rides so far - and
since I picked it up late Monday, I have only really owned it 2 days so
far.). I bought blue bar tape to probably wrap the handlebars, but for now
am just using it in strategic locations, like under the bell and mirror
mounts so as not to scratch up anything while I'm playing around with
positions. My son gave me the pannier for my birthday present so I wanted
to show him how nicely they fit on the rack (had to go back to RBW to get
help putting on the non-intuitive-for me-after-all rack). Everything brand
new except the transferred seat.

I had never dreamed I would buy a Riv but accidentally came across the
retail shop last Oct and accepted Grant's invitation to test ride the
following day. Got to ride a Cheviot a little bit and from that point on
it was really just a matter of when, not if. I spent a ton of time trying
to come up with other possible solutions, but this was the right one. If
you see someone on a shiny new beautiful orange bike riding around the Bay
Area in the next few weeks with a great big smile on her face, ring your
bell at me to say hi!

And orange is fun. I won't keep doing this (too much), but here's yesterday

if I thought there was room for 2 bikes inside the motorhome. Of course,
there is and so nice to see them there ready for the day.

You will likely find us on the trail today pulling 2 year old in trailer.

Any suggestions for nice rides in the area are appreciated. Preference for out
of traffic. Helping with grandson but not tied down so anywhere in general
area, incl wine country works.

me. Fit very nicely. I'm 5'3" and ride a 50 cheviot. Don't know if that
helps, but it was a fun ride (Albatross bars).

All the colors are very nice, but i really like the blue clem smith jr. They
all have a really nice rbw detailing where the stem attaches to the frame, nice

Not sure I'm happy with my standard build tires. I am not looking for extreme

I may be predisposed to not love the tires it came with cuz my son said they
are slow/heavy. suggestions from this group?

Re: [RBW] Re: Got my new Cheviot

2015-03-29 Thread KC
I like the concept of the 42's. My limited research (that is googling) led
me to believe the Hetres would be a good choice. While they are more
expensive, it is important to keep in mind I just "justified" a Rivendell
(even though not the most expensive choice, it was a lot more than I ever
thought I'd spend for a bike). I'm old enough that I get to say, quite
frequently it seems, "I only have so many years left..." Works out pretty
good, especially when added to the fact that I'm sorta on vacation right
now and in my family, when you go on vacation, you get to justify a lot.
So I want to make sure I am getting to know the Cheviot under good
conditions.

If no one has a reason I shouldn't give the Hetres a try, that is what I
will probably do (and be sure to take along something to fix a tire with).
I am interested in hearing if anyone thinks that is a bad choice. I don't
mind spending the money on them, just don't want to do it over and over,
since I only have one bike to use the tires on.

<https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8KqJGoZXBy0/VRi5MAHbmvI/AQg/ZngKmuGtgUw/s1600/not-the-joe-rodota%2Btrail.jpg>

I don't go out of my way to ride gravel, but I seem to end up on at least
some gravel everywhere I go. But only "some". Like today, we headed off
to take the Joe Rodota trail from Santa Rosa to Sebastapol and somehow made
a wrong turn right away and ended up on a different trail that turned out
to be wonderful (photo above) and we thought a much nicer ride than the Joe
Rodota trail (which we managed to take for the return trip). And since we
didn't know we were on the wrong trail, when we got to the end of trail
sign we kept going because there was still a trail and we obviously weren't
where we were headed yet. And at that point, the trail because a pretty
gravel-heavy trail. We finally got to downtown Sebastapol and even met up
with someone on the way that did it on purpose. Chuck and I both agreed it
was a great day and very fortunate we took the wrong trail. So I want to
be able to ride easily and deal with whatever comes up (without getting off
to walk too often). And no sense in me having bullet-proof tires is the
others in my group don't.

DougP - I appreciate your input, just figured I'd better defend my son
quickly before he saw the post! I really appreciate all his input (and will
review the tire decision with him before doing anything). The pannier on
my bike was my birthday gift from his family and I'm loving it.

Kellie - I will be back in your area tomorrow morning for a few hours. Is
there a bike shop in the area that would likely stock any of the tires I
would consider? I'm getting such a great opportunity to ride different
places while we're here that I'd love to make the swap sooner rather than
later to maximize my fun.

Re: [RBW] How was your weekend ride?

2015-03-30 Thread KC
Great a idea for a thread to share the joy.
On Saturday we rode our bikes from the KOA park in Petaluma to downtown
(apparently 3.9 miles) and then found our way to the Petaluma Marsh Trail
(I think Shollenberger Park, about 2.2 miles) for a nice chance to watch
kayakers on the river and beautiful birds. Then back to Petaluma for great
Thai lunch and then back to KOA. A "full" day by the time we got done.

On Sunday, we drove to Santa Rosa and left the car at Olive Park to ride
the Joe Rodota trail to Sebastapol (I expected about 4 miles). We
immediately took a wrong turn and ended up riding the Prince Memorial
Greenway Trail. Rode it a little past the "end trail" sign where it
became gravel, then dirt, then ? and decided to go back to the trail end
and check the GPS. It showed we had ridden about 4 miles and were 4 miles
from Sebastapol. VERY happy we took the wrong turn as it ended up being a
really beautiful ride and gave us the opportunity to compare. So then on to
Sebastapol to enjoy a nice cup of coffee and make sure we knew how to get
on the Joe Rodota trail to ride back. Trail was very nice, but neither of
us thought nearly as pretty as the Prince Memorial Greenway. Sure makes
you want to live in Sebastapol and work in Santa Rosa, or the other way
around, so you would have to ride that commute every day. Even better, not
work and just ride.

Next challenge. I can't ride without a mirror. In fact i used 2 bar end
mirrors on my old bike - i have a condition that results in less peripheral
vision (minimized eye movement) so it really helps me keep track.

New bike has bar end shifters that I'm really enjoying. I added one German
mirror from riv cuz i didn't see a better option based on my googles and bike
shop forays. It's ok, but the distortion is so different. I am used to a much
truer perspective.

i really prefer not using a helmet mount. Has anyone seen a good handle bar
option? It also seems like i should be able to create a mount that would let
me repurpose my bar end mirrors to mount on the handle bar. Has anyone done
that? Hard for me to believe someone else hasn't tackled this already.

today's ride was a repeat of the other day so no new pics from me. Tomorrow

within that general area too.

Can you suggest an interesting ride somewhere around there that will keep us
pretty much off roads and won't kill my husband pulling the trailer?
Something besides the Bay Trail since we do that often. (Then I'll have some
more pics to add.)

Re: [RBW] How was your weekend ride?

2015-04-04 Thread KC
Forgive me, but my "weekend" started yesterday, Fri (actually we just
pretty-much retired, so you'll hopefully have to forgive me a lot if I get
my way). We had a really nice ride on the bike trail from Sebastopol to
Forestville. Amazing how beautiful this area is & how nice the bike trails
are. If we hadn't started so late, I would have loved including the Santa
Rosa to Sebastopol section in it for a longer ride, but it is what it is. I
rode the Hetres and definitely felt the difference. Next time out I will
hopefully take time to play with the tire pressure to see what works best
for me. I'm still figuring out the whole flickr thing and what privacy
levels I am comfortable with, so will add a couple pix to the Cheviot group
and attach a representative one here.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot Flikr Group

2015-04-04 Thread KC
Didn't get to take either of the rides Dan & Kellie recommended, but have
filed them away for first opportunity. Just added a couple of pics to the
Cheviot group from yesterday's ride Sebastopol to Forestville so I am
bumping this up. Definitely not a long enough ride, but great fun and hard
to beat starting the trip off with buckwheat crepes. I transferred my old
seat to the new bike (it's the only thing not brand new on it so far!).
When I told Keven I usually had a numbness issue after a ride, he suggested
a comfort saddle he thought I should consider as "that should not happen".
Guess what - bike that fits me properly results in no numbness from
saddle. I just feel like I could ride forever although, to be honest, we
haven't ridden more than 20 miles in a day probably so who knows. But I
think I'm correct and will test it soon as I can.

Really getting to "know" my new bike & am really enjoying it - I think
Grant should be paying me for PR work. Thanks to Dan, I now have the
Hetres on the bike and now have to play with tire pressure. Of course, I
cringed yesterday every time I heard something crunch under my tires, but
never saw glass and no problems.

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread KC
This info is very helpful as we will be purchasing a carrier immediately.
Turns out the fork paint damage on my beautiful new bike was likely caused
by the current carrier (Yakima hitch-mount swing away). Although we
couldn't figure out how it could be happening, the person loading the
carrier (rude to name him) has been extremely concerned about my bike and
tried a new position yesterday resulting in nice scrapes on the back side
of the frame. Best guess is even though they were loaded at the far ends
of the 4-bike carrier, my bike was attacked by the other bike's brake
lever. I will likely have to take Keven's advice to stop crying and put on
clear nail polish and then cover with reflective tape. At this point I
will be quite nicely reflecting on one side of the bike. Since I'm hoping
to not continue the process and the carrier loader is trying to avoid being
killed, looks like we will probably buy a new carrier immediately.

It kills me to see my mixtie hanging askew on the hanging racks (and why is
only my bike getting scratched up?), especially when we add the 2 kiddo's
bikes into the mix. I've considered the attachment to create the cross bar
on my bike, but it seems like an accident waiting to happen. Somehow it
seems a platform would be more "organized". We have other hanging carriers
(quit using them because we replaced with a swing-away to have access to
the back of the vehicles). It helped me to see the above comments and
wanted to see if there are any updates that would be of use to us. After
reading the above, I think I am right about the platform being maybe a
little better for the mix of bikes and am a little leery of further
experimentation with my bike on the hanging carrier. I don't think we
could easily handle a roof mount and the roof top is reserved for
a kayak anyway..

We drive a Subaru Outback and Jeep Grand Cherokee, moving the carrier back
and forth. If we had a 4-bike carrier on, we probably wouldn't get out of
our own driveway without scraping so raising the hitch up would probably be
important. Most of the time it would be 2 bikes - standard road bike with
fenders and my Cheviot. But we also need the option to bring along 2 bikes
for young kids. I've been looking at the ones for 2 that accommodate an
add-on for an additional 2. It would be most useful for it to be
swing-away so we could easily access everything. It is important that we
can secure the bikes well as they could be unattended out of sight
sometimes (although we are careful about that). And loading/unloading
shouldn't be an ordeal so we can it frequently - we have a mix of short (30
min to 1 hr) drives to start riding and long trips.

I will look at all the recommendations above, but appreciate any updated
input. Thanks.

(I think my optimal solution is a diesel sprinter with 4 captains chairs
and a fold-down sofa in the rear to seat 3 and sleep 2 as queen size bed,
with plenty of storage space between sofa & captains chairs for neatly
organized "equipment", partnered with a 23' toy hauler for more
accommodations for a longer trip. I think we could make that work. Makes a
new carrier look pretty inexpensive, even if unplanned)

[RBW] Re: Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers

2015-05-01 Thread KC
Great and appreciated input. I'll look at that rack. It sounds like we
could start off with the capability to carry 2 and then add for 2 more in
a while so the cost isn't as bad up front..
My husband says we have 2" on both - I know we put the heavy duty hitch on
the Subaru. Used to tow a good sized boat behind the jeep & I think we
planned for consistency even though Subaru has limited tow capacity. It's
the last think I want to spend the money on but I'm feeling like I may as
well just be dragging the bike along behind the car the way I'm going now.

Good to know about the ground clearance. We still might need something to
raise it up as we start off with a fairly steep driveway that we might not
get out of.

Really appreciate the offer to check it out but we are in SoCal. Spent a
month up your way and I don't think the (same) rack did any damage the
entire time it was on the jeep.. I really think the first damage was after
we returned and used the rack on the Subaru. Not sure why it would make a
difference, but.

Re: [RBW] Photos: please consider providing link rather than attachment

2015-05-06 Thread KC
I think the other issue with attaching large photos is many people are
getting emails on their phones and have bandwidth limits. My own is
unlimited so generally not a problem, but when we were on the road
March/April my husband and I relied on our phones as hotspots for our
computers and we are limited with that. And, unless it has changed, I
think when I am using the phone as a hotspot the usage on the phone counts
towards the limit too, not just what I use for my computer. With email
syncing all the time on both, I am sometimes unintentionally doubling my
usage.

I love seeing the photos in the body because it is more convenient, but
know it is better for me to wait until I am on an unlimited use connection
to see it, so a link works better as it gives me control. The photos I
take on my phone are pretty high resolution on purpose because my husband's
hobby is photography and he wants to start with good pics. I haven't
figured out yet how to email a pic from my phone in reduced resolution so I
don't know how to "nicely" add a pic if I'm posting from my phone (I may
have inadvertently added a high res one before figuring that out - sorry).
When I've posted from my computer, I started just opening the photo on my
computer and snipping it to then copy it in. I think the resulting photo
is small enough to not cause a problem.

(We started off the trip by sharing the photos we'd each taken during the
day by emailing them to each other. It didn't take me long to figure out
my 3GB monthly hotspot allowance would be eaten up in no time. One email
from my phone to my husband (sitting across the room from me) racked up
usage sending to him and then syncing to my computer to my sent folder and
then used up the same on his allowance. Swapping USB drives was a much
better idea. although not nearly as convenient)

[RBW] Great rides - along the 5 (OR/WA)

2015-05-14 Thread KC
We are researching rides for upcoming vacation but would appreciate any
input from people - generally along the 5 from the CA/OR border to Seattle
area.

Here's the scenario - 7 people total: 2 grandparents (Cheviot/Space Horse)
who enjoy riding away from traffic, some hills but not killing themselves
all day. 2 young parents (likely Glorius/DoubleCross) who can handle
anything. Both subsets will get to go off on rides w/o the other (probably
limited to 4 hrs for the grandparents and 3 hrs for the parents).

And the rest of the time all 7 will ride together, which means a 7 and
9-year old riding their own bikes with a third young one pulled in a
trailer that shouldn't be bumped around a lot. Have to minimize exposure
to cars on these rides. Length of rides will be subject to how the 7 and
9-year olds handle the day, but can be mitigated if they are planned so
that if it comes down to it dad can race back to the car alone and then
come back to get the ones that need to be removed from the road. Really
helps if there are interesting stops along the route for kids to do/see
something besides being on the bike.

Some days we will all ride together. On some the grandparents may head off
in the morning and the parents in the afternoon so all the rides don't have
to be kid-friendly. Please share any of your great adventures that fit any
of these scenarios.

[RBW] Re: First trip to riv

2015-06-06 Thread KC
YES. They are like what you read about in In Search of Excellence and so
different from so many companies today. In spite of the fact that my son &
d-I-l have several Rivs each, I probably would not have bought one if we
hadn't randomly wandered past BB&H and recognized the Rivendell name.
Grant invited us to stop by the next day for a test ride and I just had to
do it. While I tested the Cheviot, a woman came in to pick up her Betty
Foy. The look of pure joy as she rode it around the parking lot probably
influenced me as much as anything else. I wanted to test hills because I
can't get to the end of my street w/o going up a killer hill. So Grant
figured out where we could go to test some hills and rode off with us to
lead the way so we wouldn't get lost. How could I not buy a bike from them?

I love what they do and how they do it. I feel pretty confident they are
selling quality and doing it at a fair price. I love the atmosphere, how
they work together. And Grant brings lunch in for them several times a
week from several of the great nearby restaurants.

[RBW] Re: Car Racks & Rivs

2015-06-13 Thread KC
I started a similar thread about a month ago when we needed to purchase a
new bike and I wanted a platform as my hanging one seemed to be killing my
mixte. We were concerned with both a mixte and fenders. The 1up was
highly recommended to me and confirmed that it was fine with fenders Here's
the comment re that sent to me off-list "I have fenders on my Surly Long
Haul Trucker and I bought the foam pad thingy 1Up makes for a few extra
dollars which works very well and doesn’t crush the fender. I did notice
that on the back fender that the struts (the arms that straddle the wheel)
actually touch the fender struts which connect it to the back stays - at
first I was a bit worried about bending them & then I realized that if
anything, it kept the bike more securely upright in the rack, without me
needing to “clamp” the fender/wheel as hard, and that it had no ill effects
on the fender alignment."

I really liked everything I saw about the 1up, but we ended up going with
the Hollywood Rack instead (also recommended in the thread). It was about
half the cost and seemed fine, even if not quite as substantial. The
initial install was pretty easy - you have to set the platforms in the
proper positions for the specific bikes and that takes a couple of
minutes. For $350 we got the carrier that works either as a 2-bike carrier
or adds the extension to make it a 4-bike. To this point we've only used
it for the 2 and haven't even attached the extension. It loads so fast it
is amazing. As a non-tall woman I love that I can easily lift my bike
on/off and that it puts things at eye level.

The bar is nicely padded and clamps on the top tube of the bike and on my
mixte it nestles perfectly where it meats the seat tube. The instructions
are to place the bikes opposite one another but when we did that, there was
some slight interference and we put them the same direction instead of
messing with seats, etc. And it worked perfectly. Both are very
secure. It is a little concerning that the tires extend through
the platform so I have visions of crunching my bike if the tires hit on an
incline. But it is very clear that the bottom of the carrier will hit
first since the platforms sit up higher, so I know they are safe. We are
able to keep the rack on all the time and tilt it for access to the back of
the car, not quite as nice as the swing-away hanging rack we had before,
but not bad. And it is so easy to unload/load the bikes that even if we
have to remove them to do something (like pull a kayak off roof), it's not
a big deal.

We tow our jeep behind an rv with the rack mounted to the jeep. The
instructions say not to use it for a tow vehicle or on a trailer, but it
seems to be just fine and it seems like a standard thing with all the racks
and we've always done it w/o problems. So just hoping it is just a
standard disclaimer which must be related to the added length affecting how
it handles on an incline but we have to be careful of that already (the
hitch between the rv and car would likely hit so we'd be forewarned)

Here's a picture attached) of our 2 bikes on it the first time we used it.
Not sure it's the greatest picture but could take better on Mon/Tues when
we load up for our big trip. We will also probably be putting the added
attachment on at that time so we have the flexibility to carry other bikes
with us since it's a group trip.

(We had also considered the Kuat since it seemed great, but never had an
opportunity to see one and it was very pricey also. Saw one week before
last in a parking lot and it is a beautiful, sturdy-looking frame. Looks
much more substantial than ours, but we are completely happy with our
purchase)

[RBW] Re: Going carless?

2015-08-22 Thread KC
These bikes look so cool and I am jealous of anyone that can go carless. I
dream of a day when a car is a rarity for me. But right now we live in (a
beautiful wonderful small) community where you pretty much have to drive
about 25 miles, starting through a mountain pass, to get anywhere. And I
know I am lying to myself a little here. We can't dump the car, but we
could ride bike daily to the store to pick up groceries. Sure, the
groceries cost more, but that's the price of good entertainment, right?
AND that's great justification for adding racks and nice bags to my bike
because then I will truly need them. I will start making that a priority,
at least until the weather makes it not a good idea for me. And if I make
it until the weather turns, maybe I'll figure that one out a little better
but for now me on icy hilly roads don't seem like a good idea.

Of course, what struck me immediately in Patrick's posting was "think how
many cool bikes they could have if they would both go carless" I realize
that may not be practical, just like it isn't for me right now. But I'll
bet Patrick's daughter will follow in his footsteps and look at her car
some day and think "how can I get rid of this?"

really exploring our options on our bikes as we finally have time to do
this. And my Cheviot is 650B. But if nothing for me, then I would love to
take advantage for my husband or "surprise" my son, assuming he doesn't
read this post. 700 works fine for them - maybe the ricorso? We ride a
variety of surfaces so I would say "pick something that would be a great
opportunity for a trial". If the tire doesn't turn out to be great for
them, I'll pass them along in the group at the same offer.

[RBW] Re: black cork grips - to shellack or not

2015-08-28 Thread KC
I shellacked my cork grips after googling enough to make me feel it was
ok. The look is nice cut I am not happy with what it did to the feel. if
my palms get sweaty at all on the bike, then they just feel too slick. I
haven't done anything yet, but when we were on vacation I was sure thinking
about seeing if there was something to remove the shellac without hurting
the cork. And , of course, at that point I saw info saying don't shellac.
I wouldn't do it again. I think it undermines part of the reason for the
cork grips.

It is too bad the Cheviot only has 1 bottle holder but it's not like you need 2
bottles at once. We headed off this week for a (great) day ride with Doug P and
his wife Melanie. Because we left early, I had a huge bottle of coffee tucked
in with my load on the back and my water bottle on the bike. I'm sure I could
do the same if loaded up and figure out a 3rd if needed. I too am dreaming of a
short tour on my Cheviot (bought the tent last year so I have a start). Talk to
Will at Riv hq. I'm sure he would have some great input.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-01-21 Thread KC
Somehow I missed seeing this. Since you have put the trip off until next
month, I can add my suggestions. Consider coming out our direction and
staying in San Diego.

We love to park at Mission Bay and ride a loop there. You can pick from
several to provide varying distances depending on how the gang feels. It
is a flat ride. You can stop and play on the beach in the bay area (rent a
paddle board, etc.). There is an area with tons of restaurants and you can
spend some time at Belmont Park (and get a whopping huge ice cream there,
which seems to be a popular reward for the recalcitrant riders). You also
have the opportunity to take the ferry from the harbor to Coronado Island.
It feels so fun to roll the bike on for the short trip. When you get off,
there are plenty of choices for a snack/lunch. Then you head off to a bike
trail that goes along the water. You usually get to watch some Navy Seals
climbing their course. When you get back to the harbor, it is a short
distance to a shopping/eating area. Lots of bike rental places if someone
wants to test out an e-bike. Or grab a Lime scooter.

There is so much to do in the area, you can easily plan a day of doing
things besides biking - Tour the Midway in the harbor, go to the zoo (but
you would want to plan a day), go to Balboa Park, go to Sea World. My son
and his wife went whale watching out of San Diego harbor yesterday and saw
a calf and a juvenile.

>From San Diego you can also roll the bikes onto the Coaster and head up to
one our beach towns for the day.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-19 Thread KC
Good input Joe. I know you were steering me to the mid-drive and using it
on the Groove. I guess I still have too much to learn to place an order.
The people who we bought our house from had solved their problem with a
front hub and were happy with it as far as doing what they needed from it -
getting up the one big hill. I tested, by accident, a really nice e-bike a
couple years ago. I didn't like the feel of the pedal assist. It was fun
to see what the bike could do. I just want to put on a little power when I
really need it. I really liked that bike, but it was overkill for what I
need and way too much money.

I know you put a kit on a bike and then took it off to sell it. Must have
been a mid-drive, so maybe it's simpler than it looks to me. Doug P gave
me the name of someone that does mid-drives (they want to see the bike) and
I also spent quite a bit of time on the Luna website that I think you
referred me to. I've been wanting to load up the bikes and go talk to the
people at Luna so I guess it is time to do that. And then we can have a
nice day riding that bike trail. We've done it a couple of times with
friends that live a block away and we owe them a visit.

Then, I'll have to rethink the "not a 4th bike" idea and consider the Rad
folder that has also been recommended by someone on the list. Leah, you may
want to look into that one for your husband.

Re: [RBW] Bikelessness

2019-03-24 Thread KC
Beer likely would at least get the flat tire addressed quickly.

The other very easy solution is to buy a Brompton (or Tern or probably any
other folding bike) that will take little room in the garage and magically
seems to adjust to fit any size rider quite nicely. Then you are always
prepared and have a loaner ready for company too. Sounds like you probably need
2 to be safe.

[RBW] Re: SHOES!

2010-11-14 Thread Jeff, KC MO
I have a pair of Axo (?, can't tell for sure from the logo) that I
bought at a bike swap meet for $10 with stiff soles and no provision
for SPD. They look like skate shoes but are perhaps the best bike
shoes I've found yet. I had to cut off nearly a foot of lace from each
shoe and re-tip them with heat shrink tubing to make them just right.

Also, I have a pair of Montrail trail runners that were too stiff for
running but work nicely for cycling. They have a flap that goes over
the laces and zips shut and snaps down, keeping the laces away from
the chainring. They came with gaiters for the really cold days.

In the summer, I wear a pair of North Face sandals.
