[RBW] Re: Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-24 Thread Frank Brose
Buy the Goodrich if it fits and can handle the tires you want to run. They
are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds are
second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they have
a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that would
fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular. I've
had at least 6 different Riv's. All fine bikes but not as fine as a
Goodrich. You won't be disappointed and if you are you'll certainly be able
to find someone to take it off your hands.

Good point. I didn't even think about the All Rounder. I actually tried to
get Joe Starck to build me a bicycle after he had quite the business. He
refused to pick the torch back up and was adamant about never building
again. There is not a bike in that whole lot I wouldn't like to own.

[RBW] FS NOS 56 STT Sam Hilborne

2013-09-02 Thread Frank Brose
This is new ,never built, orange canti, single top tube Sam Hilborne.
F/F/HS and bottom bracket. I was going to swap parts and pieces off my
Atlantis and Kogswell and build this up But I've decided to sell this one
and others as well. It's time to downsize. A couple of pictures can be
found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68843829@N03/
Not much to show though. The blemish on the chainstay is the only one on
the bike and it would be covered with a chainstay protector. Asking $1050
shipped to your door as long as your door is in the lower 48 CONUSA. Please
contact me off list if you're interested.

[RBW] Re: For Sale: Heron Road 56.5cm $950

2020-08-31 Thread Frank Brose
This is beyond a really good deal. These are fantastic bikes. I had one.
Selling it was one of many stupid bicycle deals I've made. I'd suggest
anybody not familiar with Heron do a little homework. You'd be hard pressed
to find one in this condition as well. If I was in the market I'd pay that
for the frame alone and consider the parts a bonus. There's a reason you
don't see these for sale very often.

[RBW] Re: Friction Shifting and Riding Tips?

2012-04-19 Thread Frank Brose
Joes' advice is great. It's simple stuff. It's like learning to ride a
bikeonce you figure it out (and that's not to tough) you just get
better. I prefer it but it's what I learned on and still think it's as
good as it gets. You have to dance on the pedals so to speak. In
fact, given my choice of any type of shifting I could put on a bike,
it would be downtube or bar con friction. Get to know it and I think
you'll enjoy it.

[RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me

2012-05-05 Thread Frank Brose
GRAB The following:
Gomez
Rawland
Atlantis
Bleriot

Gomez because, Well, it's a Gomez.
Rawland because they can go both ways if need be.
Atlanis because as Mathew Grimm from Kogswell fame once told me, it's
one of the best designed frames ever built.
Bleriot because set up with the right wheels and tires will be just as
fast as the Romulus.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Buy sealed everything and ride the bike. But bottom line is if I'm

I'm all for hearty wool and layering, that's what I do. It's the time

It's easy to go outside and be moving around in the sun, then come in (we
keep our house cooler, upper 50's-low 60's) without putting anything else
on, though I'll toss on my Filson's mackinaw if breezy or colder than 35

Ventile is well worth saving up for. Delighted with my Hilltrek (Cotton

Personally, rather than spending more on a heavies wool option, I'd
suggest layering with more wool and getting the cotton analogy sooner
rather than later. The outer garnet is perfect year round for all kinds of
conditions, and then you layer as needed underneath, making those layers
less critical (unless you're going lightweight down) to spend more coin on.

I look forward to hearing what you find and decide and how it works for
 you.

I agree with fullylugged. Throw some Grand Bois on it and give it a run. I
also think (with me at least) it's splitting hairs but the Grand Bois tires
just seem to ride nicer and hence probably feel faster. A Bleriot is the
bike that converted me. Enjoy it!

[RBW] Re: Sam Hilborne and Brooks B17

2014-01-04 Thread Frank Brose
I was never a fan of proofhide. I've always used Obbenaufs ( since I found
out about it) at least once a year sometimes twice and have never used a
saddle cover. You might try going to the Obbenaufs website and see what
they offer for leather treatment .My son who works outdoors in any and all
weather conditions uses it on his boots and swears there is not a better
leather care product available. It's worked well for me on the saddles I
have and prior to that I used neatsfoot oil (like I said I was never a fan
of proofhide). There are thousands of opinions on this and I might be all
wrong but if something works for me I stick with it.

I'd have to agree with Jim on this one. I have 7,8,9 speeds that I
shift with friction (I happen to like it that way) and I wouldn't
change my 9 speed setup for a 7 or 8, nor would I upgrade the other
two for a nine just for the sake of change.I'm more of the type ..when
something works fine I leave it alone because I'm also the type that
can over think it and screw it up.

[RBW] Re: AHH 56, 57 compare & contrast?

Given my choice between 650b or 700c I'd always go with the 650b and I
don't think 1 cm either way frame size means squat. I just like 650b.
Can't speak about the AHH but I've had more than one bike with each
wheel size and 650b wins hands down everytime for me. Just as fast IMO

[RBW] Re: pedal across wisconsin?

2013-03-10 Thread Frank Brose
I've never had any experience with them but have done this:
http://www.bikewisconsin.com/Grabaawr/index.html
Wisconsin has a wide variety of terrain. If your in decent shape 50 to
60 miles a day is doable without feeling trashed at the end of the
day. Hell I ride that in the summer and I'm getting older, fatter and
slower every year. Most of these organized rides take place on
secondary roads which for the most part are excellent with a low
traffic count. The secondary road system is quite extensive and well
maintained. As it should be given the amount of taxes we pay. Sorry
had to rant a little. The small amount of time you'd spend on main
highways should be of no concern. The sholders on most are wide and
for the most part drivers tend to give cyclists a fairly wide berth.
People are friendly, beer is cold and the food is good.

[RBW] Re: Shimano bar-end shifters & Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-28 Thread Frank Brose
I've used Shimano Bar ends alot and generally speaking I almost always flip
them to friction mode. I cut my teeth on Suntour barcons and have just
always prefered friction to index shiffting no matter how many cogs I have
on the rear. If you're O.K. with friction only the Riv silver shifters are
great and if you can find some Suntours they work great as well and are
pretty beefy and will take alot of abuse.

If it'll fit buy it. Great bikes. I have one and it's one of the few bikes

(that's what I have on mine) which makes for a real nice ride. Not to

Ihave bikes that cost a helluva lot more that I don't like as much as my
RB-T. If I come across another in my size at a decent price I'll buy it as
well.

What Jim says is well worth considering. I don't know how much I have in
mine but I know it would be way north of $800 if I would have bought
everything new (might be anyhow). I had it repainted and had used parts I
on hand that I used and it still cost me a fair amount of money . The used
parts cost me something at some point in time and new cables, chain,
tire, tubes, ect. all add up. I also have enough parts that I knew if I
didn't like the setup I could always change it's hairdo That being said
it's still one of my favorite bikes but then again it fits me and I like
the ride. If I were fiscally responsible when it comes to bicycles. I
probably would have never pursued it. But I'm not.

[RBW] Re: Century ride training for the un-racer?

2013-07-17 Thread Frank Brose
Years ago, in the 70's to be exact, I started riding and wanted to do a
century. I read everything I could get my hands on involving training for
cycling and running to build endurance. I came across this book called LSD
Running (hey it was the 70's) or something to that effect. The Author was
an advocate of going long slow distances with increasing mileage gradually.
I thought "why not try this with cycling". It worked. I rode daily and on
weekends increased my mileage at a long slow pace. I still use this method
when planing on some long miles. Not rocket science but I'm not a rocket
scientist and it still works. Take your time and enjoy the ride.

[RBW] Re: Need shoe recommendations for riding.

2013-07-18 Thread Frank Brose
5.10 Dirtbags. I bought a pair a month ago and have been pleasantly
suprised at how good they are. I too ride MKS touring pedals with clips and
straps and these are the best shoes I've tried to date.

I might be wrong but that sure looks like Jim Thill's from Hiawatha Cyclery
in Minneapolis that he decided to part ways with some time back. Nice
Score! Like Christopher said "You can do anything on an Atlantis" Enjoy!

[RBW] Longshot WTB IRC stem shifter mount

2014-11-26 Thread Frank Brose
Title says it all. Only shifter system I haven't tried (since the 70's).
I'm working on a winter project and it's time for a new twist. Please
reply offlist.
Thanks,

[RBW] Re: The joy of a bicycle.

2015-01-24 Thread Frank Brose
Always has made sense to me. I've had a love for bicycles since I first
learned how to ride one. I've lost my front teeth, broken my collarbone,
nose, and elbow while enjoying the freedom. Small prices to pay given the
countless hours of peace and solitude.

I think it's a helluva deal and a fantastic looking bike as well. You
not only have a bike you built yourself but a weeks worth of time with
a master of the trade. Hang a value on that.
