If your old Blackburn failed-take it to a shop and exchange it-they have a
lifetime warranty. I'd have one mini and one floor pump replaced no
questions asked, both years old. Just handed them to my shop guy and he
handed me a new one off the rack.

If you just need or want another pump, I'd recommend another
Blackburn--with the warranty, you'll never need to buy another. Unless you

2016-08-18 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Jeff,

Excellent report!

I made it for the coffee and social (great to see you Erl and James!) but
missed the ride due to the baby not being quite ready for riding.

I've studied the G&G routes on ridewithgps before and they look great
though a lot more aggressive climbing profile wise compared to my DC area
towpath/rail trail and commute routes. I'm definitely intimidated by the
hills out there. I'm definitely excited to give them a try though!

I was really impressed by G&G in general, awesome store with great
atmosphere. I wish i didn't live 1hr+ away or else it would be a really
frequent visit. Still it was neat to be around so many like-minded riders
and admire all the thoughtful builds and styling frames. My mind has been
wandering towards fat or mid-fat bikes lately but Saturday was a reminder
of just how good I already have it with the Bomba/Saluki (and others).

I am looking forward to the next scheduled ride as well!

Tony

I have dipped Silver Shifters in PlastiDip, which is the rubbery stuff you
use to make tool handles grippy. That was strictly for looks and
grippiness. I know of no cover product for a Silver Shifter that would
enable you to jam the shifter into your leg and have it not hurt. Maybe if
you figure out a way to cover your shifters with a tennis ball they
wouldn't hurt.

[RBW] Re: 26x1.75-2" tire recommendations

2016-08-18 Thread David Banzer
I briefly had a too-small-for-me Trek 890. They're really cool frames, but
they're definitely not a mountain bike. 72.5/73 degree seat/head angles on
the 21"-or-so frame. Trek grouped them together based on wheel size and
called 26"-wheeled bikes 'all-terrain.' They're really more a touring/road
bike that happens to take 26" wheels. I think they came with 1.75" tires or
something smaller maybe, and really weren't intended for big tires.
To your question, I'd go with 1.75" Paselas.

Moving the shifters to thumbies or to the stem could also alleviate the

Thanks for the elevation profile, looks a lot like the rollers that I'm use

Lunch is at 36.4, so it's before lunch.

I saw a very funny thing on that climb once, a few years ago. I'm
grinding up at my typical sub-10 mph pace and this young woman comes
blasting by me out of the saddle snarling something at me as she goes
by; gets about 5 or 10 yards ahead of me and suddenly cuts hard right
into a driveway just before the crest, wobbles to a stop, gets off -
practically falls off - the bike and flops down on the ground totally
exhausted and completely out of breath.

I'll use the low gear on that one. The climb before it is drawn out,

The current forecast has a 90% chance of thunderstorms "in the
evening". Of course, that doesn't mean we won't see any earlier in the
day. In any event, I'm bringing a bike with fenders. You really don't
want to be riding an open-wheeled bike in the rain on rural roads in the
Amish country...

[RBW] Re: Hub Trub

2016-08-18 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've had this happen with my Clementine. I think the longer chain might
make it more of an issue, too. I did not know about the extra strong double
pawl set in the Silver rear hubs. I just don't backpedal on that bike any
more. Also switching from the stock Sunrace thumbs to a stem shifter seemed
to help, but that may have just coincided with my behavior change. It seems
weird to get a more complicated derailleur to solve the problem of a more
complicated hub. Well, I guess not weird, come to think of it, par for the
course.

I'm registered but, regretfully, will probably bail. The NOAA website is
predicting rain and a 70% chance of thunderstorms around Lancaster
beginning about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. I have no desire to repeat my
experience from last year's Civil War Century.
Although I'll miss the ride (which is supposed to be beautiful), the best
way to ensure that you guys have perfect weather is for me to stay home and
miss it on the assumption that it's going to rain.

Jim, it's a Nitto R10 bag support I bought from someone here. It's kinda
minimalist, it doesn't double as a rack for a trunk bag or panniers (you might
make a Small Loafer fit). I like it 'cause it supports the Carradice I
sometimes run, without having that "I'm a big empty rack" look when I don't
need any more than a bar tube.

FWIW, I'm currently running 1.75" Paselas and VO fluted 650b fenders on my
'87 Trek Antelope (can't remember if it's an 830, or 850). I did have to
spread the fenders a little to get the radius right, but I still have TONS
of clearance with a perfect fender line. I'd love to try Rat Traps, but I
don't think the VO fenders are wide enough (I think after spreading them,
they are 54mm).

Re: [RBW] Silver shifter covers

2016-08-18 Thread Joe Bernard
I hear ya, Bill. After I sent this I started thinking about getting
thumbshifters for that bar and putting the bar-ends back on the Noodles I just
removed. I have cable splitters on my Appaloosa now, so I can put a second set
on the Noodles and have both cockpits ready to swap when the mood hits. I tried
the Choco-Moose - late of the just-sold Clem - thinking I would settle on a
preference, but both bars are great on this bike. Time to spend more money!

[RBW] ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-18 Thread Garth
You never know , a few years ago I bought 2 great vintage Deore fd from a
seller on ebay for a song. While they were not new in box there was no sign of
any use at all. These were few models later than the original Deore , all
silver and flat inside the cage. I run one on my Bomabil and the other for
another bike. I prefer the flat style every day of the year too.

You may not need a triple though, I use a 105 double with a 24/36/50 on one
bike and it works fine. I think it was a 5500 or maybe 5600 model, from about
'99 or 2000. You can find such vintage ones and other models from lower lines
that used 8 or 9 speed also on ebay , even some are NOS.

[RBW] Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-18 Thread Patch T
They've been out for just over a year now, yeah? More?

Who has been riding them extensively, and can share some solid feedback?
Where and how do you ride them? On what? With whom? And why?!?!

I'm interested in getting the Standards, but would like to read about the
Extralights, too.

(If there's already the same thread, apologies, I searched but couldn't
find it)

Love,
Patch

[RBW] Re: FS: Blue Newbaum's

2016-08-18 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, T-O-STAR Bobs:

We started hoarding Tressostar years ago fearing it was going away. Now
we've got a pyramid of the beautiful stuff all piled up nicely on the
bench. We sleep like a baby knowing it's there, ha. Quite a few different
colors but mostly black. Lots of black as it ages better, IOHO.

We must confess to stretching...really s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g...a thin
couple-o-inches run of cheap 'cork' (what IS that?) across the tops to
provide just a bit of kush behind the hoods mostly. You'd never know it was
there but we've grown to like just that little bit of thickness.

BTW, to engage in some unabashed name dropping, my old riding pal, Lon
Haldeman (we from NorIL), the undisputed champion of long distance cycling,
always layered cloth tape. His palmares includes countless, legendary,
epic, jaw-dropping rides, one after another, for decades. And when were all
younger, the only wrappings were essentially Benotto plastic and
Tressostar. Our T-starred arms and hands have aged just wonderfully and
thankfully and gracefully we keep on keepin' on!

Sheathed in cloth always, from steamy Athens, GA.

[RBW] Re: FS: Blue Newbaum's

2016-08-18 Thread Hunter Ellis
All right, I'll give it a shot! I love the look and I love the feel of a
skinny bar. I also suspect I'll have an easier time wrapping it (after 20
or 30 gel-cork-ish wraps, I still mess it up in different ways each time).

I'm relatively comfortable on my ride--I notice a little hand fatigue and
numbness around 40 miles. I was thinking to myself today, even though it
seems counter-intuitive, maybe pushing my seat BACK could shift some weight
off my hands/arms into my legs/bootay? For fear of hi-jacking this thread,
I'll search for the post that discussed hand pain a while back. Not that
I'm suffering greatly!

Re: [RBW] ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-18 Thread René Sterental
Yes. I just installed one on my Atlantis with the triple René Herse
crankset that doesn't work with the regular triples.

You can find as many as you need in the online Soma Fabrications shop. It's
the Sun XCD front derailleur, all silver, works with 8, 9 or 10 speed
beautifully but it's braze-on, so you need to buy separately the adapter.
Soma is out right now, but RBW has them.f
http://store.somafab.com/sunxcdfrde8s.html

I also put the rear derailleur on the Atlantis, so it's now a full silver
colored traditional drivetrain, just like it's supposed to be! :-)

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-18 Thread Gravel & Grind Espresso + Bikes
I’ve had ‘em on my Hunqapillar for about half a year. I commute, do fire
roads, single track with rocks, short dirt road tours. Tread wear is as to
be expected from such a light tire. Paselas they are not, for durability
on the tread. They also don’t grip nearly as well as Paselas, as I found
when corning in the rain, and my whole bike flew out from under me, as did
the guy’s bike right behind me, riding the same tire.

Pluses: great ride quality, I run em around 30 psi. Low weight. Look
great.
Downsides: super thin. They flat on any little sharp object. Not gunna
last more than 2000 miles, for me at least. Maybe 1500, really. Expensive.

Tubeless: I didn’t want to run mine tubeless, but I set them up that way
after repeatedly flatting on them. 2-3 flats for a weekend tour. Can’t
handle that. I used orange seal enduro sealant and tape, and Stan’s
valves. No flats since, and that was 5 months ago.

Recommendation: get em if light weigh, supple, basically bald tires sound
like they might fit your riding style, and you are willing to convert to
tubeless. As a rule, when setting them up on customers bikes, I urge
tubeless conversions, and most of the 12 pair or so I’ve sold go out the
door tubeless.

[RBW] Re: Some recent Gravel & Grind Riv builds and a last plug for our Riv and B-stone owners Bunch Ride Sunday the 14th

2016-08-18 Thread Gravel & Grind Espresso + Bikes
Just for the record, we do rides like this every Sunday night. Check our
facebook page for details on em, but they’re a regular thing, and the folks
who come do the rides are all on the same basic program: smart bikes, go
slow, ride hard stuff, find cool roads. They just aren’t all Riv riders.
So if this ride sounds up your alley, just come on a normal Sunday shop
ride. Meet at 4, wheels down at 4:30. To check mileage or general ride
direction, just check on FB or Instagram the day of the ride. There’ll be
something posted there... -James

[RBW] WTB: 160 or 165 cranks for Rivendell Rambouillet (trade for your Sugino 170s?)

2016-08-18 Thread Lesli Larson
I'm looking to swap out the stock 170 Sugino XD2 Cranks on my Rivendell
Rambouillet. I prefer riding 160 or 165 arms.

I searched via eBay for my beloved TA cyclotourist cranks but have not had
much success of late.

To economize and get this bike out the door, I'm wondering if anyone has
Sugino 165 arms for the XD2 crank that they would like to trade for a pair
of 170 cranks?

OR-

Do you have a TA cyclotourist crank in 160 or 165 that you would like to
sell. Are there recommended compact surrogates with similar finish and
low-Q factor?

Regards,
