Deacon, you must be an animal to ride a SS in that terrain! Here in Vt I
can't go out the door without hitting a 10% grade and most rides will have
at least a 14% ramp somewhere along the way. I wouldn't dream of riding

[RBW] Re: Wee Rides are Awesome Rides!

2015-07-05 Thread Beth H
It's true. No ride is too small.

I used to avoid too-short rides. The cyclometer on my fork would stare at
me, gently mocking me if my rides lasted less than five miles.
Then, I decided it was time to tear down my All-Rounder for a long-overdue
overhaul. To serve me in the meantime, I rebuilt my Bridgestone MB-4 as a
city bike, with upright bars, racks and fenders. And no cyclometer. I
decided to try NOT thinking about distance.

That was over a week ago. And after the first couple of rides, I stopped
caring about distance. And two things happened:

1. I spent more time riding (albeit at a slightly slower pace).
2. I enjoyed my rides more.

I'll be tossing up a bunch of Huret cyclometers on eBay soon. But first,
another ride before it gets too hot out there.
Happy riding!

For a carry along map, the best would probably be the Adventure Cycling
Association's Pacific Coast route for that section. If you were touring the
Oregon Coast, the state (ODOT) provides a free bike map with all the
amenities listed. Haven't seen something comparable for California.

And yeah, they really need to update the book, but I'm wondering if the
authors are burnt out on it (and I wouldn't blame them if they did!) I like
the book as an overview type thing, a book to check out at camp in the
evening or at breakfast. It gives a good impression of the day ahead. But
it's frustrating to use while on the road. Thankfully most of the ride of
the coast is "Follow Hwy 1 south". (Or in OR/Nor Cal, "Follow US 101
south.")

Re: [RBW] Getting pleasantly lost in the bosque

2015-07-05 Thread Patrick Moore
I thought of stopping to take photos as soon as I blundered into what
turned out to be terra incognita, but at the time I was pushing hard
through sand and thick weeds and trying to keep the bike from going into
the irrigation ditch; and after that I forgot about it until I got home.

Michael: I always use pretty dry lubes -- mostly wax with chain oil, Pro
Link, and some purple stuff.

So my chains may not collect the grit that others' do with very thick, wet
lubes. Still, my chains certainly get dirt on them, particularly the
Fargo's. My technique is to pinch the two removable plates together with my
left forefinger and thumb while grabbing the next link in line with the f
finger and thumb of the right hand: push the right toward the left while
wiggling both links and pushing inward on the removable ones. I push and
squeeze gently; no death grip.

It always seems to work for me.

I agree each and every ride on a Riv can be great. In Michigan, as a teacher,
I try to get on one each and every day of summer, winters can be long, hard,
and cold hence the XXL Moonlander but that is once the week at most.
Twice a week I take the Quickbeam to the local market store for grilling meat
and fruit only 5 miles round trip. Two mornings a week I take a quick 12 mile
loop around Spring Lake via the bike path between 1st and 2nd Breakfast. In the
evenings at least once a week I ride the Bombadil or "new" Atlantis to Lake
Michigan for a quick fresh water swim or to play in big waves if we get them;
15-30 miles round trip depending on route. Once a week a longer
exploration/tour ride to where ever the spirits move me generally 30-60 miles
on the Mark N. custom. Once every 2-3 years my wife will ride between 2-20
miles on the tandem to make me consider keeping it another year or two.

IMO, the best riding is turning errand rides into longer detours. Fri: 21
mile gofast out and back on the dead flat Rio Grande bike path (17.03 and
17.76 mph averages, clock running including several brief stops on both
legs). Saturday: 19.23 miles on the Fargo, getting lost in some sandy
doubletrack and newly discovered McMansion territory on the way back from
what was planned to be a 12 mile rt to a nearby grocery store. Today, 16.XX
miles rt to and from church.

Aside: humid today -- 75+% or so and ~ 77F outbound at 9:20 am; ~ 30%s and
low 90s return. The WoolyWarm is not as comfortable when the humidity gets
above the natural ~15% cutoff. I daresay that plastic jerseys are better in
90F high humidity, given the stink. But for our typical 95F sub 20% (sub
10% is common in the afternoons), wool is the cat's pyjamas.

One of my touring buds treats every errand as an opportunity for
adventure. If needs a part from the hardware store, for instance, he'll
ride 10 miles instead of walk around the corner. He delights in hooking up
his trailer for a run to the big box warehouse for bulky items on special
sales. He lures people onto S24Os by offering to carry their gear if they
don't have racks or luggage, and always loads up the trailer with firewood
for these events.

[RBW] Ram as 650 tourer?!?

2015-07-05 Thread alan lavine
Hello to the group, I'd like to pick y'alls brains (sp?)

I have a 64 cm Ram that I bought used, and I'm trying to see how it fits
into my stable. I have Compass tires 700 x 32, measures 30, on it now, and
I realize that I can either put larger tires on it OR fenders but not both.
I wanted both so that it could be used as my credit card touring
bike...looking for 38's with full fenders.

Would a 650 conversion achieve that? Would it change the ride at all? I've
never ridden 650's before. Besides new wheels and possibly brakes,
depending on available reach, what other modifications are required?

The serial # is R038...any idea as to date of manufacture?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom. I've not been much of a contributor but
I read this blog daily and always enjoy it and learn from it.

[RBW] Ram as 650 tourer?!?

2015-07-05 Thread David Banzer
I converted my Redwood (less fancy Ram) to 650b. It currently has 48mm tires
with room for fenders. Clearance is tight at the chainstays but doable so far.
Using long reach Tektros, you might need to file a little depending on rim and
brake pads.
It easily is my favorite bike after the conversion.

It happened again today! Some guy in carbon kit came up the wrong side of the

Later, on the trip home I saw him riding on another street but this time with

[RBW] Re: Ram as 650 tourer?!?

2015-07-05 Thread Fullylugged
Spec was 35 mm with fenders or 37 mm without. So you can put bigger tires
on and stay at 700. Or you can convert and go much larger. Your serial #
indicates early production at Toyo.

[RBW] Ram as 650 tourer?!?

2015-07-05 Thread Joe Bernard
It's feasible, but 650b conversions are usually done on bikes with short-reach
brakes and higher-than-Riv bottom brackets. The Ram starts with medium-reach
and a low BB, so getting long-range brakes to work is dicey, plus you're
looking at possible pedal strike issues in corners.

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer?!?

2015-07-05 Thread Tim Gavin
Alan-

I really like my 650-converted Riv Road Standard
,
which had short-reach brakes but an even lower bottom bracket (80 mm
drop). It now fits 38 mm tires (fork legs and chain stays are tight) with
45 mm fenders, and rides great.

I have scraped the pedal slightly in corners, so I'm very careful not to
pedal through corners any more. Seems a small tradeoff for wider tires,
fenders, and a great ride. The BB is so low that I feel more like a part
of the bike than perched on top of it. I'm careful to level out my pedals
when riding over obstacles.

As others have stated, you may have issues finding effective brakes with
enough reach. Dia-Compe 750 centerpulls have tons of reach, and can be
effective with good pads, good housing, and a low straddle cable.

I'm thinking of participating, although I haven't settled on a bike yet. On
one hand, "downdating" my Riv to the prerequisite equipment may be fun; on
the other hand, it's a good excuse to get a true classic ride (like a

Whatever it is, I'm sorry I missed this year and I'll be sure to sign up

maybe a ridiculous question and slightly off topic, but... im aware you
cannot put a double wall titanium mug over direct heat. does the same go
for a double wall steel mug?

[RBW] Wanted: your broken or mangled alloy fenders

2015-07-05 Thread Anton Tutter
I'm looking for some mangled, cracked or otherwise unwanted aluminum
fenders (Honjo, VO, Electra, etc). They're not for a bike, but to
re-purpose as a display for the taillights that I am now manufacturing.
Hoping for free, but am willing to pay a nominal price depending on
condition, plus shipping.

Interested in any style (hammered, fluted, smooth, etc) and width of fender.

Contact me if off-list you have something that fits the bill!

Anton

Drew, the question isn't ridiculous, just the action. Grin. It would be
like putting any insulated thermos on heat -- you will over heat and/or
melt the insulate chamber/barrier and damage it. Insulated containers hold
cold or hot liquid/food but don't cook them.

My set up, which I use for bike packing and generally not day rides is:

Bike: Hunqapillar (QB sometimes for day jaunts)
Bag: large trunksack mounted on mini front rack, bikepacking. Small saddle
sack on QB for day jaunts.
Coffee: Local organic roast, as light as I can get it, which is generally
medium.
Stove: Fire Box Stove bikepacking; Trangia with mini-stand day for some day
trips when I don't want to mess with a wood fire.
Ignition: pipe lighter
Brewer: Pourover through cotton filter helio cone.
Mug: ACW
Accoutrements: Boil water in Kleen Kanteen single wall, brew into 20 oz
Kleen Kanteen insulated, and then get 3 cups of coffee from it. Leather
gloves or bandana as pot holders. Small plastic bottles to hold cream,
which has been known to become butter.
Comfort: day trips: canvas tarp to sit on; bikepacking thermarest foam pad.
NEED: Set up is complete, so long as I remember everything. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] +24H Overnight - Harper's Ferry on the Tandem

2015-07-05 Thread Tony DeFilippo
http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2015/07/harpers-ferry-by-tandem.html

My wife and I followed up on our successful Great Falls ride a couple weeks
ago by significantly upping the ante and riding out to Harper's Ferry and
back this past Tues-Weds. The trip was fantastic, we're still speaking to
eachother even! In fact there has been plenty of discussion about future
tandem trips and/or re-doing this trip with some variations and additional
company added in. I know there are some of you looking at C&O trips in the
next couple months so I included alot about the trail conditions and what
we found along the way in my blog post. Bottom line is that the extremely
wet weather has predictably made portions of the towpath pretty muddy. In
general though it is easily accomplished on a riv-ish equipped bike. I'll
definitely do this trip again, and other than some minor tweaks I wouldn't
want to change much from this experience.

Erl met up with us on our way out at Fletcher's boat house and got a great
shot of us at the start of our trip shown below;

Re: [RBW] Re: I was turning left this morning

2015-07-05 Thread Peter Adler
Counter-current riding (what BikeSnobNYC calls "bike salmoning" has
escalated rapidly in the last five years.

A friend of mine was on the citizen's police review board of Richmond, CA a
few years back. His explanation of the original behavior came from street
cops: Allegedly, the practice was originally done by drug dealers, who rode
against traffic in order to sight police cruisers quickly enough to ditch
contraband. That can no longer be the case, or else there are hundreds of
drug dealers biking around my neighborhood. Some of them are little old
ladies of advanced years, and some are 12-year old kids.

When I first complaint about this to my 74-year old mother, who'd been out
of the US for several years, she told me that in her 50s youth, pedestrians
were advised to walk on the pavement against the flow of street traffic, so
that they could see dangerous vehicles in advance. She also said that it
was advised in women's self-defense classes. I certainly don't remember
such advice from my own 70s yoot; does anyone know whether this advice has
resurfaced?

On the occasions where I come to a near-collision with a salmoning cyclist,
I've wanted to interrogate them: What's your reasoning here? Why do you
think this is a good idea? It's gratifying to think that some people really
don't have a self-justification for this silly, dangerous behavior, beyond
"I saw somebody else doing it", and they'll change if someone just tells
them that they aren't wearing any clothes.

Unfortunately, I live in a big college town, where a large percentage of
the bike population are 18-25 year olds away from adult supervision for the
first time in their lives. Upsetting other people and defying rules are
often features, not bugs.

Re: [RBW] Re: I was turning left this morning

2015-07-05 Thread Justin August
Ironically I was brought up in the 80s in small town West Virginia being told
to always bike against traffic. Not until I was driving at age 16 did I realize
how utterly insane that was. Now here in the Bay I get unreasonably mad when I
have to drive and folks are salmoning. It's not like we don't have the bike
lanes going the right way!

[RBW] Re: Eroica California: Might There Be a Riv Contingent?

2015-07-05 Thread Nick Worthington
I rode this year, plan on riding again next year. I didn't want to
back-date my Romulus, so I rode my 1940's 3-speed (Short course) My wife
rode her Betty, and I know at least one of the Riv staff rode, but not on a
Riv. If you are into old bikes, it's a great event - lots to see, lots of
like minded folks to talk to.

I also ride Cino Heroica in Montana, Which is a totally different
experience - more of a community ride on old bikes. (And lots more
dirt/gravel) Both rides are good, but I think I prefer Cino. (Rivendell
is/has been a sponsor of Cino)

For next year, I've ordered a Rodeo, and plan on building it to conform to
Cino/Eroica specs.
