Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet

2015-01-06 Thread Will
I give a +1 to this. I added racks to 2 older Motobecane and Peugeot frames
that did not have barrel braze-ons. I used the Tubus adaptor clamps. It's a
robust solution and, in my view, may work better many original braze-ons
since you can place them precisely where they are most effective for the
rack you are installing.

An aside, if you haven't tried a Tubus rack... do so. Like many here, I had
visions of front load carry... but discovered Tubus racks and Ortleib quick
release panniers are extremely satisfying alternatives. If your bike is
designed for rear loads, rejoice!!! Do not compromise the design.
Complement it. You will not regret.

Re: [RBW] Knobbies for 26" Atlantis

2015-01-06 Thread Tim Gavin
Fat Franks are great tires, like a Very Big Apple. But their tread isn't
knobby enough for sloppy surfaces; they're great gravel or dry dirt tires.

For a Schwalbe knobby, the Smart Sam looks like a winner. Available in 55
and 60 mm widths in 559/26" diameter.

Schwalbe's Nobby Nic looks a little faster than the Smart Sam, and the
Thunder Burt is even faster (center file tread, outer knobs).

I've had a good experience with WTB Mutano tires on my 26er trail bike.
They're fast and have enough tread for occasional slop. Mine were listed
as 2.4" wide, but they're really more like 2.2" wide on average-width rims.

I love my Smart Sams (700c/29er) on my Hunqaillar. I ride a wide range of

Re: [RBW] Re: Knobbies for 26" Atlantis

2015-01-06 Thread Chris Chen
So I did enjoy the 42mm wide Cazaderos, because of the smooth center thread
and knobs on the sides. I also found the Clement MSO to be a very nice
mixed tire. Not sure any of these are available in 26". The Panaracer
Driver Pro looks very interesting too, I think that comes in a 26". The
center is textured but not knobby but there's a nice side knob.

As for "all must go" sometimes I channel my local mattress commercials

Jealous, the weather was crap down here in Texas on NYD. Although we
did do a nice 200K on Saturday the 3rd, if a bit cold to start - about
37F, but warmed up to around the lower 60s under a brilliant sunny
sky.

8:30 is a fast time. Is that typical for you? Our group on the 3rd
finished in 10:19 and had a similar amount of climbing. Although, we
had 4 flats on the ride and the whole group stopped when the flats
happened. Plus the lunch stop in Liberty Hill, TX was a little
leisurely - they have a great deli that makes sandwiches that are
absolutely stuffed to the gills with the good stuff! At any rate, not
sure what our rolling average was.

Re: [RBW] Re: Winter Welcome Wagon [Share Your Pics]

2015-01-06 Thread Tony DeFilippo

Proof of concept ride! The 1-3" dusting ended up being a bit more of a
storm than most expected this morning but I had a BLAST getting to work. I
underestimated how much extra work riding in the snow would be, any more
snow and I'd probably wish I had gears. The Xo-3 did fantastic, drive
chain was good, brakes held up perfect, the alba's kept me stable and in
control... and of course the Nokian Mount and Ground studded tires did
great. In the fresh (still falling) morning snow I felt 100% stable. In
the evening commute the Mount Vernon Trail proved to be pretty treacherous
with a crusty and bumpy ice surface but the tires still held up well. More
than anything the evening ride took a ton of concentration. And yes the
last picture is from my coffee stop, Misha's in Old Town to meet my buddy
Wes who was also trying out his new studded tire winter bike (a drop bar
Trek Antelope).

I'm doubtful about tomorrow, wind chills are supposed to get the temp down
awfully low and I doubt the trails will improve overnight. Maybe by Friday!

Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet

2015-01-06 Thread Peter Adler
I can speak to the virtues of both these gadgets, as I am using both to
attach my Bruce Gordon racks to my Raleigh International. Bruce uses
flat-steel rails to attach his rear rack, and advocates the better-grade
Nitto P-clamps (and includes them with the new racks...but really, ecch. If
I have a nicey-nice rack, I want the whole thing to look nice. So I
replaced all the stock attachment widgets with Tubus rails/clamps/swivel
mounts/extenders, and I'm much happier.

The sizing of the Tubus clamps is a little more appropriate to steel tubing
- not like the "close enough" of P-clamps. I've had much more secure
attachment since I went to the Tubus bits, and a lot less noise.

BikeBagShop.com also sells Tubus attachment bits. They have rotating 10%
off specials on most of their product line throughout the year; Tubus and
Ortlieb normally come up together, about 2-3 times a year.

If it can handle it, the Schwalbe Racing Ralph 55mm. Have used the same
tire on my 29er and they are excellent both on and off road. Oh, and they
are light. Downside is not much flat protection, but did I mention they
are light?

Nice for being out. I'm at the point of chickening out of riding these past
few days. We did get up to +8F today. Lots of black ice. Even though I
have studded tires, the cars don't. Snow can be fun. Or, once it packs to
a hard icy surface, not so much. At least to me.

[RBW] Knobbies for 26" Atlantis

2015-01-06 Thread Dennis Hogan
Anne - I put Rock&Roads on my AHH and loved them for road (they had a pleasing
whooshing sound) and dirt and sand ( though in limited amts). Gave up on them
because of not being able to solve fender issues. I live in Portland!!
Then I got the Continental Cyclecross speed tire- it has a file tread in the
middle and knobbies on the sides. ( Riv sells them sometimes) They were great
for mixed terrain - I was able to keep up with several riders on full-on Mtn
bikes on a ride with mostly dirt trails.
I only swapped them out to try the Compass Barlow Pass tires which are now my
most favorite ( I know I am fickle).

That's the way of it here. Had the snow been deeper, you'd find
conditions would continue to worsen over the next few days, as you get
sections cleared by sunshine, others in the shade or on overpasses
(notably the bridges at National Airport and under the bridges to DC)
that will remain icy for a week or two, and large permanent icy ruts
develop. After a typical "good sized" snow fall the MT V trail will be
impassible for 1 - 2 weeks.

pronounced center knobs, so would therefore be a bit slower on road, with a
bit more grab on dirt.

Re: [RBW] Re: Adding braze-ons and painting my "new" Rambouillet

2015-01-06 Thread Tim Gavin
I also use both types of Tubus clamps, and I really like them. One
distinguishing feature: each type can be left on the bike if the rack is
taken off. They use separate bolts for the clamping and the rack mount, so
it's easy to remove and replace the rack.

I've used the mid-fork clamps on my Riv Road, but currently use both to
attach a Nitto Campee Classic (the one with detachable lowriders) to my
girlfriend's San Marcos. She vastly prefers how the low panniers ride,
compared to a basket on a rack above the front wheel.

The Tubus mid-fork clamps are big and square (even more eccch than a
p-clamp). But they definitely look more professional. As with all clamps
on the frame, I protect with tape and innertube.

[RBW] WTT: Nitto M-18 for a Mark's Rack M1

2015-01-06 Thread DS
I bought an M-18 about a month ago for a front rack but have instead
decided to mount it on the rear as a saddlebag support.

Looking for an M1 Mark's Rack to work with all the rack mounts on the rear
of my quickbeam.

Bay Area local trade preferred but can ship.

Let me know if you have a spare Mark's Rack and interested in swapping for
my M-18. If you don't need the extra stays and don't need the tab for a
light mount the M-18 is a nice, clean alternative to the M1

[RBW] FS: Albastache bars, Grand Bois Hetre tires (pair), Pletscher rack

2015-01-06 Thread DS
A few items for sale, pickup local in Bay Area:

Albastache Bars - $65, bought new a few weeks ago for a quickbeam build but
decided to go w/ Jitensha bars instead. Paid $88 new (They're ~$80 with the
new Nitto discount for January on the newsletter), installed them, wrapped
them, rode them around the neighborhood a few times, unwrapped them, and
took them off. A little tap residue, but otherwise brand new.

Grand Bois Hetre Tires - $80 (priced per pair, black w/ tan sidewalls, 650b
x 42) - used for less than 100 miles, a little dirty but otherwise pretty
new. $120 new.

Pletscher Rack w/ tail light - $60, installed as rear rack but never
actually used except to mount a rear dynamo light, not worth keeping a
whole rack for a light mount so selling this and getting a seat post dynamo
light. $78 new (with tail light adapter).

If interested for shipping let me know and I'll calculate prices for
shipment, need to get some boxes for the bars and racks. Willl split the
cost of actual shipping.
