Riv has the Smart Sams, which I've used in 700 and they ride well. Asking about knobbies opens up a whole can of worms. Do you think the mix is more toward dirt or road? What kind of dirt -- soft, rocky, rooty? Do you want to go towards a faster, lighter tire, or more bombproof?
