I too fall in the camp of why?  This is a great single speed bike why change 
it?  My answer would be sell it and buy a bike designed to be multi speed.

Actually I can see that a hub gear either fixed or free makes sense, given
the dropouts. I guess that cosmic voice that is continually buzzing in my
head is having at least small second thoughts. But I can't see putting a
derailleur, front or rear, on it.

You can also do a hybrid IGH/muti-ring crank.  Here's mine that I just 
finished (Not a Riv, but Rivish)  http://tinyurl.com/ce9aosc  Alfine 8 in 
back, 28/48 in front.  Rides nice.   An SA 3 speed with a triple up front 
would give you a nice range too.

There are also 2-speed options (that don't require cold-setting or 
chain-tensioners):

- Sturmey Archer makes the 2-speed S2 Duomatic Kickshift hub with 120mm 
spacing... and provides direct drive in 1st gear and a +38% 2nd gear - This 
costs about $75 and comes in coaster or non-coaster, and 32/36 hole 
configurations.  (I have one of these waiting to be laced up)...
- FSA makes the Metropolis Patterson 2-speed internal geared crankset. 
 This provides direct drive in 1st gear (28 tooth chainring) and a +57% 2nd 
gear (44 tooth chainring equivalent).  It is a full crankset and includes 
the bottom bracket.  It fits a standard 168mm BB shell.  (I have this on my 
SimpleOne and love it... to me it never stops feeling like a single speed; 
but I have an expanded range of terrain I can now ride without dismounting)

Ah, so many options...  but in the end, there's nothing like the simplicity 
of a single speed *(he said as he pondered further.. hmmm... what would it 
be like to combine the Duomatic with the Patterson???  hm mbwaahhh!!!)*

But  1)Bike helmets only work once  2) there is no testing of which I am 
aware that demonstrates the relative safety of the design versus a bike 
helmet 3) If is in fact more safe than a bike helmet than the author is 
arguing that increased safety is not worth a few hundred bucks?  Given the 
exuberant advocacy from many helmet promoters I find three rather curious.

Oh man, I had so much fun at the RBW garage sale. I didn't score anything 
big, just a lot of little things...

I got a rain bag cover for my acorn box bag $5, wool arm/leg warmers $20 
total, a 650b front wheel (Twin Hollow to Deore Hub) for $20, another 
unknown rim to deore rear wheel w/ 9 speed cassette $20, 2 Jack Brown Blues 
for $5!!!, free fatty pumpkin tires, Drive side sugino xd-2 Crankset w/ 
rings for $30...

Overall, I think my best deals were 650b front wheel $20 and 2 new-ish 
condition Jack Browns for $5. :)

My coolest thing, was surprisingly the rain bag cover for my Acorn bag. 
It's perfect for randonneuring! 

Major props to Rivendell folks for being so cool even when it was chaotic.

I picked up some wool leg warmers (a little too big sadly) and a

I have an unused Betty Foy frame - 50cm. It was purchased for my wife, 
built up and we then realized it was too large for her. 
Comes with the stock headset and BB.. would also like to include the new 
parts that were purchased for the build - Tektro long reach calipers, 
seatpost and stem. Also have a brooks sprung ladies saddle, and a bunch of 
other parts we bought for it but never used.

[RBW] FS: Riv Road 60cm

My last post seems to have never made it.

A heavily used frameset that never saw its rejuvenation.  Too many 
projects, time for this Joe Starck built, Joe Bell painted frame to find a 
new home.
Photos can be seen here.  This Riv could use a fresh paint job, however it 
can be ridden as is.  No dents or cracks; a sound frame.

TT is 59.5cm (center to center) and ST is 60cm (center to top), rear
chainstays are about 435-440mm, dropouts are horizontal. It has very
ornate lugs. Still looks really nice. Rivendell thinks the head angle is 
73.5 and the seat tube is 72. Should fit 32mm-35mm.
The rear spacing is 130mm.

Great weather as well in SE Minnesota.  Rode the Sam Hillborne on some 
gravel roads which were outstanding since most of the gravel is gone and 
the roads are hard packed smooth and dry.  Beautiful vistas of the 
Mississippi River from the ridge.  Stopped at a winery for samples.

i put derailers on my quickbeam. it was easy just use an adapter to add a 
rear derailer and use a phil or paul 5sp 120 hub or any of the ones from 
the fifties thru the early 80s. i got a nice used 120mm 700c wheel used for 
30 bucks at the lbs. i even use the nice silver bar end shifters.

[RBW] Lock question

My wife has a lovely HH and is afraid to use it. She'll ride it in the 
park, or out to the beach, but she won't use it for errands because she's 
afraid to leave it locked in front of a store for 10 minutes. I think her 
old CrypticNight lock is inadequate, but there must be something that is 
useful out there (I hope.) She does not plan to lock it to the fence at 
Dolores Park overnight, she just wants to be able to go to the bakery or 
the grocery store and have the thing still be there when she comes out. Any 
suggestions/thoughts?

I picked up a complete toyo-Atlantis (54.5) - minus a seat/post - for a 
solid deal. A *little* on the large side for me - but I should be able to 
dial it in shortly.  I knew I wouldn't have to be too vulturous given that 
I was shorter than most folks there, and yet I still broke down and bough 
the bike 5 minutes after the starting bell.  Not sure why I was the only 
person looking at bikes/frames for the first 10 minutes of the sale?  Happy 
to have my first Riv, on time and under budget.  :)   

Now to sell my slightly too big for me 56cm RB-1 ' 92 ... hmm. (I know, 
wrong forum).  :p

My last post seems to have never made it.

A heavily used frameset that never saw its rejuvenation.  Too many projects, 
time for this Joe Starck built, Joe Bell painted frame to find a new home.
Photos can be seen here.  This Riv could use a fresh paint job, however it can 
be ridden as is.  No dents or cracks; a sound frame.

TT is 59.5cm (center to center) and ST is 60cm (center to top), rear
chainstays are about 435-440mm, dropouts are horizontal. It has very
ornate lugs. Still looks really nice. Rivendell thinks the head angle is 73.5 
and the seat tube is 72. Should fit 32mm-35mm.
The rear spacing is 130mm.

$500, plus shipping for the frame and fork.  Many thanks-AJ

I regularly use a Master cable lock and have never had an issue. Saturday,
we snaked it through 4 bikes while eating lunch at Panera Bread Co.  I
would not rely on it for overnight though.

the chain even starting with a bench grinder -- bolt cutters won't work --

Abus Bordo are very nice.  Get the extra heavy duty one. Bordo has the 
flexibility of a chain but convenience of a U-lock as it comes in a handy 
sleeve designed to attach in place of a water bottle.  
 
If your wife is still worried, supplment with the new ultra-light Abus 
u-lock which she can use a-la Sheldon Brown to secure rear wheel to the 
seat tube.  
 
Both made in Germany to high standards.  The keys are especially 
complicated.
 
Be easier to steal a car than to get those two off.

Hi Ned,

I can relate to your wife; my Rivendell bicycle is my sole vehicle so I'm 
very protective of it.

TiGr (http://tigrlock.com/) makes a very strong, lightweight titanium lock 
that allows you to lock both wheels and the frame to a secure bike stand. 
It is the strongest theft deterrent I have found.

I supplement that with a D-lock, and intend to install pit lock skewers 
(http://www.pitlock.com/) to lock my seat post, wheels, saddle and seat 
post (in the meantime, I secure my seat post and saddle with a second 
D-lock).

Another couple of security items I'd like to get and install are a GPS 
device (ex.: www.spybike-gps.com) to alert me in the advent of someone 
taking my bike, and an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device like 
www.snagg.com) to help me in recovering my bike if it is stolen. These are 
not common in North America yet, but I think there is growing interest.

Lastly, she might be interested in looking into bicycle insurance options 
that are becoming available, like Clipp (http://getclipp.com) or Better 
World (http://www.betterworldclub.com/bicycles/bike_assistance.cfm/) which 
doesn't, as far as I know, cover theft, but offers interesting benefits.

I'm not sure how old your Kryptonite is, but the current u-locks from them 
and OnGuard are more than up to this purpose, IMHO.  I regularly use my 8 
yo kryponite to luck up my QB on errands, and I live in a fairly high 
bicycle theft area.  The current key systems are very hard to pick and 
you're not getting through the shackle with anything less than an angle 
grinder or maybe a car jack.  OnGuard even guarantees their lock up to 
$1500 for the replacement of the bicycle. 

Cable locks are definitely inadequate, since they can be cut quickly with 
relatively simple tools (bolt cutters), making a bike locked with a cable 
an attractive target for opportunistic thieves. 

In any case, I think the best bet is not leaving the bike unattended for 
long periods anywhere.  Since she wants to use it for errands, I think 
she's already avoiding that risk.

do a good job of rating security features for each lock design.  
For errand running, my vote is for the Abus cable lock.  It would take a 
powered abrasive cut-off to get through a cable, and it would take more 
than several minutes and make a lot of visible sparks.  Would take more 15 
minutes to chew through with bolt cutters.

Given that anyone who wants to steal your bike can, I am a big believer in
teh insurance option.  Check with your agent about scheduling your bicycles
on your home owner's policy.  For a very modest fee I have 10K worht of
bikes covered for 17 perils (including theft) and no deductable.

experience with the Sturmey 2SC prompts me to suggest SRAM 2 speed
Automatix.  Mine has a coaster brake which I like a lot.  2 speed
automatic transmission works perfectly shifting up and down.

I'm sure my view won't be a popular one, but if your wife has a bike she 
considers too nice to lock up, no manner of security device is going to 
matter much to her while she's in the store stressing. I have a lovely 
Saluki (not finished yet, but almost there) that I might lock up for a 
quick dash into 7-11, but I won't be leaving it for 10 or 20 minutes while 
I peruse the supermarket. I have a mid-'90s Marin MTB set up expressly for 
those kinds of errands. It's a nice bike, but not worth much, and it 
wouldn't be the end of the world for me if someone snagged it.

Will chime in and vote for the Abus lock Rivendell sells.  Not as heavy as
the Bordo series, which makes it more convenient to carry.  I use it for my
commuting lock.

I have an abus bordo lock.

I did a bunch of research and in the end decided to go with having a lock 
that was *different* than what bike thieves are used to seeing, rather than 
a better version of one that they know (u lock, cable lock, etc).

The lock doesn't have to be impenetrable it just has to be better than the 
worst locked bike around it.  It is a bit heavy, but I think it's worth the 
weight.

I have to agree with Joe, I just love my Rivendell's too much to leave them
locked up outside somewhere. I also love my MB2 but if it got jacked I
could replace it for around $350 bucks, which is no chump change but that
is about what just my Dyno wheel and lights just cost me on the Bombadil. I
also have an Xmart bike that was left behind in the basement in case I just
want to run out and not even bother to lock, it helps it is a girls bike,
what do I care what people think, I know I have a beautiful bike waiting at
home for quality rides!

I like the product. Creative and innovative. Can't say that I'd buy one 
since I prefer my cautious riding style when I leave my helmet at home.

That's not to say that I don't wear a helmet when I think the conditions 
warrant it. And as someone else pointed out - most other helmets are good 
for a single impact as well - so this is not really a drawback.

Now now. Bikes too precious to lock up aren't too precious to ride. Most of 
my rides don't involve my bike being out of my sight. For those jaunts, I 
use a different bike.
