[RBW] Saris T Bones Hitch R

2012-02-21 Thread Michael Hechmer
I posted this on the Lifestyles list, because it is slightly off topic for
this one. I didn't get much response, so am reposting here:

I bought this rack two years ago and it is my first hitch rack. I
really like the easy on and off for the bikes, which my wife
appreciates even more. I like the safety, aero dynamics, & not having
to think about pulling into the garage. But.

Getting the rack to slide on and off the hitch is a major problem. I
make sure to clean the connection whenever I use it, and often spry it
with silicon. Nothing makes it easy. I've finally written to the
mfg, but haven't heard back yet.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and have they found a
solution.

Michael

Re: [RBW] Terminological Inexactitude

2012-02-21 Thread jimD
Well Doug,

Let me tell ya, if you're after ecstatic gliding with nary a ripple you must
try the 2011 Rosco Bubbe.

It presses gently on the behind and delivers a PLUSH ride with a lingering
aftertaste of a well aged Schwinn Newsboy.

It will only get better with age (both the bike's and the rider's)!

The Rosco Bubbe clearly expresses that distinctive Rivendell terrior and all of
the distinctive twists and turns to
be found there upon. One can detects the distinctive influence of Walnut Creek
and Mt Diablo in the bicycle's
provenance.

Think of towing that against a strong headwind! It reminds me of the

Re: [RBW] WTB: Suntour Bar-End Shifter Slotted Nut

2012-02-21 Thread MSmith
I'm pretty sure that those nuts are unobtanium. They aren't really
necessary for the shifter to work properly, however. I had a set on a bike
for years with a missing nut and never had any issues with slipping. You
just have to be more vigilant about checking the tightness of the bolt
occasionally.

You might be able to make a slot in a hardware store nut with a Dremel or a
file if you really want the lock nut. Be really careful to make sure the
thread pitch is right, though. I don't have one in front of me right now,
but I think those have a really fine pitch.

[RBW] mild California winter, current mileage

2012-02-21 Thread dpco
Sorry to bring this up, but I have 996 miles on my Roadeo this year. We are
having a low rain year and its a good time for cyclists to take advantage.
By the end of this year, I will have close to 12,000 miles on my Roadeo.
Its the most enjoyable bike that I have owned.

Looks great Tom!

I've done a more 'economy build on my SimpleOne, but had some high
quality bits from the parts bin.

Front wheel in Suntour Superbe Pro hub to Mavic MA-40 rims. Great
handbuilt wheel from 1986.
Rear wheel is a newly built Dura Ace track hub to Open Sport rims.
The crank is taken from a 1986 stumpjumper. I removed the inner
chainring and bought a bash guard ring from
http://www.bbgbashguard.com/superlights.html
It's geared 36/16 now, but I may be tweaking that soon. It's low
enough to get me up the hill on my homeward commute. I can spin
comfortably at 17 MPH, and a bit faster for short distances. I'm not
trying to race this thing!
I had noodle bars, but they just weren't quite right, and have just
switched to flat bars. Contrary to some notes on the RBW info, I like
flat bars with a bar-end hand grip, but I don't have much distance on
those bars yet. Beautiful zero degree CrMo bar from Nitto.

I'm a tweaker, so things _will_ change. I enjoy it now!

[RBW] SimpleOne in progess and a question

2012-02-21 Thread brian feltovich
Sorry, wasn't trying to impose my aesthetic or ergonomic choices on you, just
commenting.

But you asked about bar tape, not bar height. My preference is to match the bar
tape to the saddle or a trim color, not to the main frame color. And if there
are too many colors in the mix things start to look random rather than chosen.
I really like the look of brown or honey (Brooks) saddles with orange cloth
tape and amber shellac. The shellac darkens the tape to a color close to the
honey saddle and they age beautifully. I haven't had issues with shellac
needing tons of maintenance...it more or less waterproofs the tape, you can
still feel the cloth texture so it's grippy, it has a slight shine, it develops
a fantastic patina, it's easy to add another coat, it's arguably Eco-friendly,
etc. What's not to like?

Re: [RBW] Re: Good quality fixed/free ss rear hubs with QR?

2012-02-21 Thread Jeremy Till
It seems someone is listening, as I saw this on the surly blog today--Surly
is upgrading the axle system in their hubs:

http://surlybikes.com/blog/post/were_going_to_sex_you_up_hub_style

The relevant part: "The brand new guts feature NON-adjustable 6901 bearings
on a shouldered cro-moly axle. Every hub comes ready to run as a quick
release or a bolt-on using the supplied grade 10.9 stainless M6 bolts."

So, this looks like exactly the solution we were talking about, a QR-able,
sealed bearing track hub that avoids the adjustment issues with previous
surly hubs. I'll probably be putting these into consideration for the
upcoming Quickbeam build, assuming they still make them in silver with
120mm spacing and they're available by the time I'm ready to do a wheel
build for that bike.

A cool thing is that if you have already have a surly hub, the hub shell is
exactly the same as the new ones so you can just swap in the new axle.

Re: [RBW] Re: Good quality fixed/free ss rear hubs with QR?

2012-02-21 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks very much for this; it was I who inquired about a QR fixed rear hub.
It's great that the new axle will fit into my existing hub. This will be my
next bike project/upgrade. Even the M6s, if not quite as good as a QR, will
at least allow me to use the Park T-bone wrench and not have to carry a 15
mm hex -- the front wheel (SON) already uses an allen key skewer.

Touchdown Tommy,

I'd go with Toshi Orange Cloth, clear shellac. If needed, I'll mail you
some Toshi orange cloth.

Post more photos, now that your setup is converging. That should soothe
some of the handwringers.

Speaking of handwringing, I have a tendency to handwring over wooden
fenders. It's an absolute fact that they are beautiful, and are
spectacular feats of craftsmanship. But functionally, they are a solution
looking for a problem, in my opinion.

[RBW] Re: New Bombadil and AHH

2012-02-21 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
I have mixed feelings about the Pletscher 2-legger. It's definitely more
stable than a 1-legger but both my wife and I tend to put too much
confidence in it, and both of our bikes (Hilsen and Betty) have fallen over
several times while on the stand. I understand the falling over when it's
asymmetrically loaded but both bikes have gone over while unloaded from
front wheel flop. I recently took the 2-legger off my bike to avoid more
unnecessary falls. A bike can't fall over if it's laying on the ground.

My usage issues aside... the 2-legger is a beautiful piece of machinery.

[RBW] FS - BIKE Magazine Collection and Some Bar Tape

2012-02-21 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Well now... Been hacking into the underbrush of items which seem to have
collected during the last (mumble-mumble) years of my life. The cabinet
which these have lived in is being repurposed, so I need some space. Which
means, I've finally have decided that someone else needs to be the curator
for 18 years of BIKE magazine issues - Vol 1, No. 1 through Vol 18, No. 9.
The first 15 years (through 2008) are complete - I'm missing issues 2, 3
and 4 from 2009 and issue 1 from 2010. If you are quicker than I am on
addition, you've already figured out that there are 156 issues total.

Or, you just looked at the photo here -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/6917503513/in/photostream
(and enjoyed the other selections showing some issues)

Now - I realize this is reasonably non-Riv, though at the time this
magazine came it, the writing and photography and even reviews
distinguished it significantly from other offerings. Now, the
"cutting-edge" stuff seems politely quaint (and much is laughably
"transitional"...).

I'll be listing these locally and through a popular online auction site,
but I figured that if anyone was interested, I'd let them go for a buck an
issue, plus shipping (local-ish pickup OK). And shipping? Well, it gets
heavy, so I think the best bet is actually USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail,
which would be (I'm guessing) 4 Medium Boxes at $12/each. So $200 to an
interested list member? I'll leave this posted for a couple days before I
CL or EB.

The bar tape was hidden in behind the magazines - hence their inclusion
here:

Profile Designs Bar Wrap - Very Bright Yellow - $4 -

Cinelli Bike Ribbon - Black - $4 -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/6918231143

Shipping via USPS for $3 (each or both).

[RBW] Re: East Coast Rivendells / BOBs

2012-02-21 Thread Chris
Glad to know that there are Riv owners out there in NYC.

I'm in the Financial District. My wife and I just got our Sam Hillborne
and Betty Foy at the end of last summer. The only other Rivendell owner I
know is a buddy of mine at UWS. He was the one who introduced me to
Rivendell and biking in general.

I've once seen an orange Quickbeam with front rack and a nice saddle bag
locked up in Chinatown (Mott St.?). Unfortunately, I didn't see the owner.

[RBW] Re: New Bombadil and AHH

2012-02-21 Thread dougP
I use a single leg on my 58 cm Atlantis & have to be careful when I
have bags on the rear. With front low riders and a stuffed handlebar
bag it's OK. But 58 isn't overly tall either.

I tried a clickstand a while back, & it really works well but is a bit
of a nuisance to use. A couple of my touring buds have the rear
triangle mount single leg & they seem pretty good.

Saw a guy about your size in Europe who had a similar sized bike,
fully loaded, 4 bags + h'bar bag + stuff strapped to the rear rack.
He had rear mount single leg PLUS a single leg coming off the front
low rider rack.

2012-02-21 Thread Jim Mather
Neighbor Joe invited me for a ride on his birthday yesterday. We had both
spotted a trail on a map that looked like it might be a good loop over and
around Mt Diablo, so we loaded up our Legolas' (Legoli?) and headed up via
North Gate Rd. At the Junction, we headed towards the summit, but then got
off the road and took the trail less traveled to Green Ranch. Green Ranch
is a former summer home built in 1939 and designed by William Wurster
(notable Bay Area architect and a former dean of Berkeley's architecture
school).

The home was designed in a modernist style and built on the southeast side
of the mountain. Joe has a picture of the current view and an old picture
of the house at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/6914384039/
The empty pool, tennis courts, foundation and fireplaces remain but
everything else was dismantled in 1993 to bring the area back to its
natural state.

We continued past the ruins on the trail to the park boundary. There was a
small gate and a very faded sign that might have once said Private
Property. The trail was obviously seldom used -- grass was growing in it
and the only tracks were deer. We hopped the gate and continued down the
trail heading towards Morgan Territory Road. Eventually the track looked
more used and we came to a much more secure gate with lots of barbed wire.
The public road was on the other side of the gate so we knew we were headed
in the right direction. The gate was high, so Joe squeezed through the
barbed wire fence and I lifted the bikes over to him. I then squeezed
through; no one needed a tetanus shot. We turned around to see the gate
sign: "Diablo Archery Club -- No Trespassing. Danger!" Good thing we
didn't have our helmets with antlers. The remainder of the ride was less
fraught with danger.

I have a few pictures at:

cheers,
jim

[RBW] shorter bolt for Pletscher Twin-Legger?

2012-02-21 Thread Edward Felker
I've been advised that it would be better to mount the Pletscher
Twin-Legger kickstand to my SimpleOne without the wedged top plate.
>From the photos on the Riv site it looks like they used a short bolt
to mount it to the built-in kickstand plate.

What length and size bolt should I get to replace the long one that
came with the kickstand?

I believe riv sells such a bolt on thier site
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/k5.htm I would wait to order a few things
though since you are going to pay 8 bucks shipping no matter what but beats
using some kludge.  Just IMHO.

It's a standard size. I forget what it is though. Just take the long bolt
to the hardware store. They'll be able to ID the diameter and thread pitch.
Buy the shortest one they have. Get stainless or plated to minimize
oxidation. Get a washer too if you don't already have one.

Re: [RBW] Joe's birthday ride, AKA, Fire(place) on the mountain

2012-02-21 Thread Joe Bunik
Ha, good bean spillin', Jim! :-)

Yep- I spent a most wonderful b'day out here in Rivendell Country!
with my friend and good neighbor Jim M. I've been wanting to get back
out to Green Ranch for a while, since I'd first heard about and
visited last Autumn.

For some context, I've had good fortune that 3 of my local riding
buddies here are(/were!) Legolas owners, and I was duly impressed on
test rides. I believe I'd put the phrase "if ever you want to get rid
of this..." out to each of them. In fact, way back when Riv had first
their crop of Legolai(?), it called out to me as somewhat ideal: light
OS, canti, fancy-but-not-too... One day a few months ago, my phone
rang...

So: I first heard about "Green Ranch" here (see p.3):
http://www.mdia.org/PDF%20Files/MDReviews/Review%20Spring%2005/MDReviewSpring05.pdf
... and was intrigued. A little digging pinned down the location and I
was off. It really is a fabulous trail / fire road, and I will happily
ride/guide anybody interested as circumstances permit!

The previous visit, I'd gone up there solo late one afternoon on an
ill-equipped 650B conversion with semi-slick too-narrow tires - just
too sketchy for the conditions and quickly disappearing light on the
back side of Diablo - so I turned tail and bike-hiked back out to the
road. This time was exactly the terrain and reason why I brought the
Legolas into my life. Absolutely perfect fit by my book.

That said, I won't be taking the bum steer we received from the Park
Rangers again. The trails heading out to the park boundary in fact DO
NOT continue on through to Morgan Territory Rd. Given the precipitous
drop in elevation past the Green Ranch site and the 99% humidity
conditions, we somewhat found ourselves screwed and in that rock/hard
place situation when we came to that first gate... then even worse,
that 2nd gate another 1000' lower on the mountain... I was not
relishing an encounter to find out who would win The Big Jerk Award:
property owner or bandit biker (yes, I realize this is sounding pretty
CYA) !!! Plus, I swear kept hearing Dueling Banjos in my head the
whole time.

Sadly, Legolas Buddy #3 was unable to join in the Legofest. But a
highlight was encountering a crabon fibre roadie at The Junction who
dropped-jaw upon seeing us. Actually, it turns out he races CX on his
L.! You never walk alone in Rivendell Country!

I add a nylok nut, even though the stand may be threaded. Somehow the
twisting action as the bike leans on the stand seems to loosen the
bolt after a while. Plus I'm sorta lock nut type of guy.

Despite loving the convenience of the Kindle, I'm with Bill on this

The term "retro grouch" seems sorta funny. "Retro" brings to mind
somehow backing up or returning. The 20th century was good to me, I
like it there, I just never left. And "grouch"? Even if you're in a
bad mood, a minute or two on a Rivendell will fix that. I think I'll
enjoy the book.

[RBW] Triple Crown Ride this week.

2012-02-21 Thread Manuel Acosta
Being President's Day week, most schools have this week off. The
hardest thing about trying to enjoy this week is that most of my
riding buddies are working.( Who works on weekdays anyway?) So life as
a teacher is semi-fun when riding on my own, but much better when
riding with others. So I conspire to brainwash the future generations
into doing cycling rides with me. One of my former students, a fairly
strong and natural rider was talking to me about the various of
"mountains" around the Bay Area. I shared my experiences with Mt.
Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo and Mt. Hamilton. He told me it would be great
to try and ride all three in a day. I told him that it wouldn't be
possible because of the amount of daylight that would be involved. I
suggested doing the three mountains in three consecutive days. Hence
the Triple Crown Ride is born.
Starting Thursday 9-10am roll out to Mt.Hamilton.
Friday to Mt.Diablo ( quick stop at RBWHQ )
Saturday to Mt.Tamalpis.

The rides will be causal. Lots of pictures lots of breaks. Trying to
mix in some dirt riding. If you're interesting in joining us let me
know.
